a 1.5 in my books honestly….but I've rounded up for sentimental reasons i guess…
Honestly one of the worst restaurants I've been to in recent memory, nearly everything here was overpriced, unappetizing, and ridiculously meager in portion, the only redeeming quality this place had was the fact that its fresh seafood was average, overall it was an experience that left me feeling extremely cheated.
I came here with a group and we ordered yuka fries, pork shoulder, and mofongo to be split among a section of the group, while I had the all in platter as a starter to myself.
The all in platter was a combo of clams, oysters, shrimp and mussels with cocktail sauce and a vinegar pepper dipping sauce to accompany the food items, the items were okay, they were served at a good temperature, although i'm pretty sure the mussels and shrimp were of the frozen store bought variety……not too bad overall, but for the price and the portion size, not worth it.
yuka fries were probably some of the worst I've ever tasted…..I don't know what it was that they did with the fries, but the center tasted incredibly dry and powdery……bit half of the fry and then started to wonder why I even bothered…….
pork shoulder had a fairly decent sauce and the polenta side that came with it was probably the best thing I had here (which is only average at best), but the pork here was the worst offender. Tough and extremely stringy and dry, for 18 dollars I had 3 skimpy pieces of some of the worst prepared, overcooked, dried out pork I've ever had in my life, did the cook boil the meat until all the moisture left the atmosphere or something?
Mofongo was okay as well, but the sauce was uninspiring and incredibly bland, had a hint of sweetness, savoriness and mango maybe?, but hints were all that I got from the sauce, no real flavor.
Would definitely not come back or even recommend this establishment to others, one of the worst and most overpriced meals I've ever had….
Great neighborhood seafood restaurant in Astoria. Came here as i was craving some seafood. Go to items for me were the clam chowder. Nice sized clams and potatos in the chowder served hot and filling. The grilled and raw oysters. They have on hand several kinds from east and west coast. Also had the grilled salmon which was cooked nicely and seasoned well.
Nice service and also nice beers and drinks on hand which a cold beer goes great with seafood.
The spot is cozy w/ a warm decor & a outdoor seating area. I been here more then a handful of times, before & after renovations. The service has always been great, the food has there pros & cons.
$1 House Oysters Mon-Thurs 3pm-7pm & Monday all night $1 House Oysters!
*Lobster Mac & Cheese* Where is the damn Lobster???
*Shrimp Mofongo* Was soO Good the sauce is banging & I think they add Maduros to the Modongo, which gives it a pleasant sweet taste.
*Grilled Oysters* A Must Have definitely one of the best appetizers!
*Bay Scallops* They were so small, reminds me of the mini scallops that comes frozen in a seafood melody bag from BJ's. What a waste of money & its toO salty!
*Fish & Chips* Damn Fish was cooked perfectly … Yeap it was Good
All cocktails here that I have tried has been a waste, just a lot of juice & not enough liquor!!!
Astoria is known for its seafood spots and it is only naturally that we will come across Off the Hook one day. It is a small spot with the kitchen right when you walk in. Towards the back are more seating, the bar, and an outside patio.
My group started with a dozen of raw oysters and clams. Oysters were really fresh like they are supposed to be. I only like to squeeze lemon juice on my oysters and this platter did not disappoint.
We ordered a variety of different dishes and I opt for their infamous Shrimp Mofongo. I thought it was a bit too sweet but the garlic sauce on the side made it much better. Shrimp that came with this did not have the 'bouncy' feeling that I was looking for in a fresh piece. This was a decently good dish but just was not wow'ed by it.
I had a bite of a friend's Scallop Roll. I did like the lightly salted scallop and the soft toasted, butter bread. A bit bland tasting without the mayo. This dish was tiny even thought it came with cole slaw and chips.
For cocktail, I had the Captain White Sangria. It was really just okay, I did not taste the Passionfruit but fruity enough.
Overall, a really okay spot for seafood, maybe just for their happy hour and beer. I just have an issue with how small the portions were for all the dishes I had. I was still really hungry after my meal. The decor reminds me of restaurants in Maine.
Came here for a dinner with my yelp friends. A friend reserved a table for 9 of us. The place is cute with outdoor seating.
We got clams & oyster for appetizer. It fresh & taste good specially with the lemon & other sauces.
For food I got maine lobster roll $17- it was good but very tiny. It didn't really satisfy me because I want more. I don't mind paying extra more for a bigger one. My friend got the scallop roll & its the same thing. Very small portion of food.
We waited too long to get our food. Maybe its because theirs 9 of us?
Not really my place for seafood.
This is an amazing spot! A place I could easily see myself becoming a regular at. The owner Katerina and her husband (whose name I have awesomely forgot), chatted with me and my boy over dinner and made us feel like they had welcomed us into their own dining room. I couldn't have asked for better service, atmosphere, or food.
Which is fantastic, by the way. I love finding places with a raw bar in Queens, there's not nearly enough of them. They have a great $1 oyster happy hour on Mondays in addition to other specials other nights of the week. They also offer Wellfleets, my favorite. They oysters were fresh and delicious.
We also split their appetizer special: salmon tartar over pickled zucchini with olive caviar. Bold and light at the same time, it was really refreshing.
The lobster roll (served warm) was also on point, and their crab patty on a bun is delicious and filling. And I'm not a sweets person, but their warm spiced apples with vanilla ice cream will make you melt.
I absolutely went nuts over their Mussel Mary made with rum (they have an impressive rum selection and can make you something customized, so branch out and try something new!). It's spicy and comes with three or four mussels, celery, and bacon. Bacon! It's huge and amazing and everyone should have one.
The ambiance is warm and inviting. Some nights they have live music, and there's also an outdoor space with some seating in the back. And swings in the dining area! And they're open late! And they do freakin brunch- lobster eggs Benedict anyone? They have a mailing list so you can sign up to be notified of upcoming events and they don't overrun your inbox, so go ahead and sign up. With all this great stuff going on why wouldn't you?
Really, I can't thank the owners and staff enough for making us feel welcome (and chatting with us about both metal and opera). Thanks for the great times, we will definitely be stopping in to say hi sooner rather than later 🙂
Went here last night with my husband and our friend. I wanted to check this place out since I saw it promoting on my local Elite page. I went to the "Seafood Showdown" Yelp Elite event here and had a great time, but I wanted to come back during normal hours to check out the main menu.
I decided to come on a Monday to check out the $1 oyster night winter special. I had a glass of cab for happy hour and a dozen of the dollar blue point oysters, with one of each of the other varieties of oysters just to check them out. To be honest, I wasn't crazy about my blue points. They tasted off to me. They tasted a little funky to me. Just didn't taste fresh. But given the other reviews I'm reading, I feel like this must be a one-off here. I decided to get half a dozen of the house cherry point oysters afterwards to make up for it, and they were MUCH better. Very sweet, plump, delicious, and fresh. So if you are going here for oysters, I HIGHLY suggest going for the cherry points.
I ordered a Smoking Bishop cocktail, which is a heavenly warm mulled rum. I could drink those all night! It was amazingly good. And perfect for a winter evening.
For my entre, I had the lobster roll which came with coleslaw and chips. It was delicious! Perfect balance of flavor in the lobster roll. Coleslaw was on point, and those chips were darn tasty! They were paper thin, crispy, and fresh – and they make them fresh in-house.
My husband had the alligator meatballs for an appetizer and the skirt steak sandwich. He loved both. Our friend had blue point oysters as well, though he says his tasted fine, for the record. He also got yucca fries and muscles. Both of them were very happy with their selections.
I will note, that I also sampled the clam chowder during the Yelp event I intended and it was great, so that's another item I can happily recommend.
Overall, this is a great seafood shack style place – which is very rare to find in Astoria, let alone NY. It is on the pricey side but the quality makes it worth it.
Service was good and the owner was very attentive, working the floor and making sure everything was running smoothly.
If I were to recommend a nice sampling of food here, I would say get a bowl of clam chowder, a dozen cherry point oysters, a side of yucca fries and a Smoking Bishop to drink.
Being the self proclaimed seafood/shellfish addict that I am, couldn't wait to try this place! Located off the beaten path on a relatively quiet block and away from the hubbub of the main avenues. Charmingly decorated interior with the bar located on the left side in the back of the restaurant. They also have a cozy yet inviting patio by the bar for those warmer days. It has oceanic painted walls to envelope you in of the sea splendor.
Food/Drinks:
House Oysters – fresh and tasty, really can't go wrong ordering these!
Maine Lobster Roll – the only thing I enjoyed about this dish were the homemade potato chips it came with! It was bland with more roll than lobstah! How dare they?!
Crab Burger – mildly better than the aforementioned roll but still a little lifeless.
Red Sangria – lacking complexity and alcohol
Service:
We were there for dinner during the week and they weren't that busy at all on that particular evening. Seated not too far from the bar within a stone's throw view of the bartender, we continuously had to get his attention to order more drinks and/or find our server. The food also took awhile to come out.
Altogether, I had high hopes for this place and will give it another go returning this evening for an elite event. I'm anticipating they'll do well and win me over!
