Stumbled in here randomly during lunchtime on a Friday (Ootoya down the block had a 20 minute wait for 1 person, no thanks). No wait here and it was not crowded.
Had a very nice lunch – everything was delicious and tasted fresh. Wouldn't say it was amazing sushi but it was definitely good. Prices were reasonable and the special roll selection was good. They also offered brown rice – it actually ended up being more of a multi-grain rice but still very good.
I also liked the atmosphere here – kind of dark – would make a good date place!
Good sushi – yes. Best sushi – no.
Good, fast service – yes. Best, friendly service – no.
Good prices – absolutely.
Convenient location, clean establishment.
Come here for a quick cheap lunch or bite after work. But if you're looking for a "nice" sushi restaurant or something a little more elaborate or fancy, opt for somewhere else.
As a long-time, non-cooking resident of Gramercy, I'm something of a self-appointed expert on deliverable and/or walking-distance food in the Union Square area.
For fresh, cheap, AND delicious sushi will all the fixings (that means brown rice) made quickly (I'm never NOT in a rush to eat), Edo Sushi has been my reliable mouthgasm friend with wasabi benefits.
It gets a little busy around the lunch hour, but even when it's crowded, I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my food. It helps that I'm always ready to give my order: sweet potato and peanut avocado roll, both made with brown rice.
The sweet potato tempura inside the roll is always crispy. The peanut avocado is just the perfect blend of crunchy and creamy. Together, they just form a powerfully delicious meal.
I don't know when their 2-roll lunch special went up a dollar to $9.95 but it's still a great deal for 2 decent sized 8-piece rolls and their delicious miso soup (or salad with ginger dressing). Unfortunately for dining in, there is a $10 per person minimum, so if you're only feeling peckish, your only choice is pretty much to order take-out!
Hmm fresh fish… Fresh RAW fish is all that I want.
I stopped by with my cousin for a late lunch. Since lunch specials run till 4pm, I got the sashimi lunch (9 piece) and added a white tuna and avo roll. Perfect amount and each bite was delectable.
I would definitely come here for the lunch pricing. Aside from that, a lot of what they have can be found elsewhere.
Knocking off a star because there was something in my ice in my water. But hey, nothing like using your chopsticks to fish it out and hoping your immune system grows stronger. 😉
One of my favorite places for sushi in Union Square. I order through Seamless for lunch at least twice a month as I find their lunch specials very reasonably priced. The sushi is always fresh and tastes good. I've come here a couple times for dinner as well, but I prefer lunch. I usually get their salmon and avocado roll and spicy crunchy salmon roll, plus a miso soup. I also have tried their bento boxes, which are good. The service isn't the friendliest, but they are quick and attentive.
a very SOLID sushi place in the Flatiron area.
Is the sushi here the best I've ever had? No.
Is it decent? Super!
Is it affordable? HELL YEAH!
Will I come back? For sure!
I was going to make a reservation here for lunch but they don't do lunch reservations.. only dinner reservations! Walked in with a friend around 12:30 PM on a Friday afternoon and the place was only half full so no wait at all! We were seated immediately and were offered beverages. Of course we got the lunch special to save money! Their lunch special deals are pretty good!!! – two rolls for $10 or three rolls for $13 and it comes with miso soup or green salad.
All their sushi rolls were average but good as well. The thing I liked most about this place is they don't give a lot of rice on each roll. There is a good amount of fish/veggie in each roll (see pics)! Our favorite was the Spicy Crunchy Tuna roll! The only downside to this place is that it can get very loud – AC and people talking.
I totally recommend this place for lunch if you work by the Flatiron/Union Square area!
From the outside, Edo did not look like much. Since the restaurant was on the second floor of a walk-up building, it was not easy to see inside its singular bay window. However, once I climbed the steps, I found myself in a casual, yet modern and elegant, dining room with a small sushi bar in the rear corner. Despite my colleagues' praise for the sushi restaurant, it took me close to two years to finally make it there. However, I am happy to report that I could agree with their opinion. I feel like it is hard to locate decent sushi in the city without going to an expensive, high-end place. And sure spots like Soto are great, but most of the time, I want something more laidback. Edo is perfect for satisfying this need.
The menu was pretty elaborate and interesting, but I wound up just settling on the Two Roll Lunch Special. I started by selecting the salad over the soup. The bowl was pretty standard with mainly romaine lettuce, 2 small pieces of cucumber, and strands of carrot. Some tomatoes or additional cucumbers would have gone a long way to spruce it up, though. I did like that the tangy ginger dressing was served on the side by default so my greens remained crisp. My roll selection consisted of the Shrimp with Mango and an Eel Avocado. The shrimp were succulent in texture, but lacked flavor and were over-powered by the sweet mango. The eel was coated in the traditional barbecue sauce and was reasonably fresh. I loved that the rolls were chilled and firm, keeping them intact. (I simply despise when my careful chopsticks skills wind up tearing my rolls to shreds!)
Edo was casual enough to act as an everyday sushi destination, but was refined enough to still feel like a step above an average neighborhood joint. I would say it was a 3.5 star experience.
Came here for lunch. The restaurant is really clean. The lunch special is cheap but the size of the sushi is really small, it was literally the size of my pointer finger. I've never had sushi so thin before. My friend had the bento box and that looked more normal.
