Europa Cafe

“Located a few blocks South of the epicenter of Times Square, this Europa seems to be run by a jocund crew of Mexicans with nary a linkage to Europe.”

“The salads are very filling, and they have a chopping machine – and the line is never like that at Chop't. They have a lot of different mix-in options and the balsamic vinaigrette is pretty good.”

“It has generouuus portions of chickpeas, alfalfa, sundried tomatoes and delicious goat cheese wrapped in a wheat wrap.”

  1. The bagel and cream cheese was pretty good ad everyone was pretty decent. The reason why it got 3 stars? I'm deathly allergic to peanut butter and even though I got a bagel with cream cheese, I guess the guy didn't change his gloves from the last time he made a bagel with PB, because I got some on my bagel. Granted this is partly my fault since I should have told the guy, but you'd think they'd know a bit about cross contamination. Otherwise it seems like a decent place to grab a bite! I'll just definitely be more vocal about my allergies.

  2. This Europa is conveniently located only 2 blocks from my office, and that is honestly the only reason I have been to this place for breakfast or lunch. Otherwise, after coming here for how many number of years, I have honestly become fed up with this place. First, Europa overprices everything, and it's mainly because it's in a touristy area. There is no justification for the pricing because the food is just not that good. Additionally, there is never enough seating because it's small and there are always tourists coming in and out. This Europa is always noisy and obnoxiously crowded. Service is also short of wonderful. And, the last time I came here would be my last visit. I somehow had communication issues with the guy taking orders. I've come here a bunch of times in the morning ordering the same exact thing; a whole wheat bagel with cream cheese. It's a very simple order, but somehow, they had major difficultly in understanding what I was asking. I specify to the guy a whole wheat bagel and cream cheese at least 3 times, and then he ends up giving me a regular bagel with cream cheese. At first, I was going to accept it, but I decided to complain to him that I wanted a wheat bagel. The guy goes, okay got it. So I wait for the new order, and he shows me white bread with cream cheese. At that point, I was getting really bothered because not only was my order completely wrong two times in a row, but I was also running late to work because it took 15-20 min waiting on a bagel. I complain to the front cashier who somehow communicates to their cook what a wheat bagel is, and then I eventually get my order after waiting another 10 minutes. Wow, I waited almost half an hour just to get a bagel. I am not even sure if it was worth it because their bagels aren't that good. Seems like a minor negative experience, but it wasn't the first where I've questioned Europa. Going back on the quality of their food, I've tried a variety of their sandwiches. Maybe 2 or 3 times, I've had the egg salad sandwich and the lettuce and tomato in it was half-frozen. Do they store their sandwiches in the freezer overnight? I have no idea. There are so many more options in Times Square to have breakfast or lunch; please go elsewhere.

  3. Maybe it's because I only ate here because I needed to use the restroom, but I didn't care much for the food here. It felt like eating at sam's club or costcos. The food was good but it felt too premade. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it wasn't fresh.

  4. These places are all over midtown.  Typical offering of soups, salads, and sandwiches.

I was a little annoyed at the salad pricing.  There is a base charge then you pay for toppings.  The base charge was not clearly advertised.  My toppings were $6.50 which the salad maker put on my slip.  When I went to pay they added the base charge and I was surprised to see the total come out above $10.

  5. Set your expectations right and you won't be disappointed.  Looking for upscale decor, experimental cuisine, and lots of "A lister" people?  Yeah…this isn't the place for you.  Alternatively, are you looking for the gritty, "real NYC", with greasy counters, angry cooks, and surly cashiers?  Nope, not here either.

If instead, you're searching for decent food, clean, somewhat generic diner/deli decor, and somewhere quiet enough that you can have a conversation, this is the place.  The food is fresh, often cooked to order (depending on what you order), and coffee is excellent.  Reasonably priced, for the city.  Breakfast, coffee, and juice for three adults came in at $28.

  6. After an hour of scouring my work area for something to eat, I ended up at Europa Cafe. What a spacious dining area! You won't have trouble finding a seat to eat. The old-fashioned tuna sandwich is pretty filling and relatively healthy, but hot damn $8 for that??! Guess that's what the "Europa" is referring to…

  7. Europa Cafe should be renamed "Laura Cafe." This is my PLACE. The cashier in the far right of the store is my homegirl. She knows how I like my coffee and when she sees me at 852am every morning, she orders someone to whip up my special blend. We chat while the coffee brews and I always walk away with a smile (and my latte).

The granola, fruit and yogurt mix is on point. The granola is borderline oatmeal in that it is very soft, so when you're eating the mixture it's as though you're eating oatmeal and yogurt, which I've found to be amazing.

I've become disenchanted with Starbucks, especially since Europa swooped in to win over my heart. When my coworkers see me walk in with my Europa coffee, they know.

  8. I've only been here for breakfast a few times. Service is pretty quick. Their bagels are actually better than I expected them to be.
