I stopped by this restaurant with my mom to order a few take out meals. When I entered there were no customers and the staff were all in the back. They appeared to be sitting down to dinner themselves and looked as if they really didnt want to take orders. The restaurant itself is not at all fancy or modern but looked like the old fashion or retro styled kitchen in someone's home.
After a few minutes, a young girl appeared and offered to take my order. Then gradually the rest of the staff came out and looked like they were all family members. Soon after I entered, a church group came in and sat down for a meal. They seemed to be regular patrons because I heard a few of them say "ill have my usual" rather then give an actual order. Another staff member took there order while I placed my own. I ordered the fried fish and shrimp combo for myself with potato salad and collard greens for my side dishes. My mother order fried porgies with the same sides that I ordered. The wait for the food was pretty long but the prices were fair. The food was also good but I doubt I would return simply because of the wait time.
This is real soul food. I've had a lot both here and in the South. The owners are from South Carolina, and they're so hospitable. They cook everything themselves, so be patient when you order. People will nitpick on the dishes, but overall, the food is beyond satisfying.
I went there today because I can't wait till Thanksgiving. I got the turkey wing dinner with yams, collards and cornbread for $10.50, praise Jesus. The yams smelled so good cooking in the kitchen, and they were spicy and sweet. The collards were tangy and bitter, a perfect counterbalance. The cornbread was soft and light.
They also have great mac and cheese and fried chicken. The sandwiches are the bare bones minimum to call them that. They serve it on white bread. Fish sandwich? Fried fish between two pieces of white bread. BBQ sandwich? The same, and you're gonna get all kinds of bits in there. Nothing fancy, but it's delicious.
My mom and I stopped here for lunch on a Friday afternoon and the place was empty. However, the had a lot of phone orders. The restaurant is a quaint little spot to eat in but looks more like it caters to take out. The staff was real sweet and the place was clean.
However, we had to wait dang near 40 minutes to get our food. There was a large group that came in but left after waiting a few minutes and didn't get acknowledged. It seems like they might have been short staffed.
My mom ordered the fish and shrimp combo dinner with collard greens and potato salad. She also ordered a chicken sandwich and a slice of coconut cake. She loved the chicken the best and we both agreed they were a bit stingy with the food portions. My mom said the cake was dry and it looked that way on the counter which is why I didn't order any dessert. I ordered the chicken wing dinner with collard greens and yams. The chicken was nicely seasoned and finger licking good and the sides were good. The prices were reasonable and I would definitely return again.
Ever see 8 adults forage for food on each other's plates? Yup well we did it on a hungry Sunday after church. Everything we ordered was tasty so we pretty much ate each other's food. The only bland item was the potato salad but it was fine since you can add seasoning to your liking. The staff was a bit stoic but you can tell they were focused on serving you some tasty food. The set up of the place is somewhat awkward if you need to use the restroom because you have to pass the open cooking area. I give them a pass cause things aren't always kosher at home either.
Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe I've been spoiled by the influx of new "gourmet" takes on BBQ and southern food in Brooklyn. But either way, I didn't think Mitchell's was all it was hyped up to be.
Sure, the space is quaint, and most of the staff seem to genuinely like working there. But the food was a bit disappointing.
The fried chicken was alright, but nothing worth going out of your way for. Was a little underspiced, though it was hot and crispy. The BBQ ribs were just okay. The sauce tasted like it was out of a bottle.
As for the sides, the mac & cheese was lukewarm, and the okra/tomatoes was more okra/corn.
I did like that the entrees came with two sides.
Their cornbread, however, is fantastic. They don't charge extra for it (vs. white bread), so definitely opt for it.
We stopped here after a friend suggested that I try the food here because I was craving soul food…..not just any type of soul food but GOOD food. Before we entered I checked for the Dept of Health grade rating and it was an A…..thank goodness. It isn't a big restaurant, there are only four large tables and two small tables inside.
We were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. We waited about 15-20 mins before someone came over to take our order. The server came over to our table with no greetings so I said Hello and then he apologized and greeted us properly. We gave him our orders and waited some more. After about 10-15 minutes, our orders started to arrive to our table. My son ordered pork chops, rice and macaroni and cheese and he was pleased with his food because you get two porkchops with the meal. I ordered smothered chicken, yams and macaroni & cheese. I was happy with my sides but not pleased with the quarter leg chicken that was served to me. One piece of chicken for either $10 or $11 is a ripoff to me. Smothered chicken is supposed to cover in gravy and mine looked just like stewed chicken. My friend ordered the chopped barbecue and was content with his food. We all wasn't pleased with the cornbread that comes with the meal but one bite into it, it practically crumbled in our hands….not good. The lemonade and Arnold Palmer was really good. A definite plus to this establishment is that they offer free refills.
I would definitely come back again but would stay away from the smothered chicken although it is one of my favorites.
Delicious, and such a unique space. Apparently, there has been a (not-so-recent remodel)– I would love to have seen the original space, but the cool thing is… you can still see into the kitchen which is ultimately the home for Mitchell and his family.
Smothered pork chop– very good, although the gravy was slightly thick for my liking.
Smothered chicken- very flavorful, albeit a little dry.
Sides were awesome too. Cash only, and they only have beer, not wine or liquor.
Simply wonderful. On a block that has become host to cupcake stores, ice cream places and mayonnaise shops-this is the real deal folks. Family run for 20+ years it's been on the block long before Vanderbuilt became Broadway of the Gentry. Stepping in here is like going back in time to old days neighborhood.
The food is amazing. Best fried chicken-savory, fresh-it's "phenomenal and best fried chicken in the north" says my boyfriend.
As a vegetarian I always get the veggie platter-potatoe salad (must have!), green beans flavored to a t, candy yams (soaked in maple syrup), okra and Tomatoe (wonderful garlicky soup base, beans and rice and cabbage soaked in a salty brine. The corn bread is off the hook.
I'm basically eating here every week now-it's become my second kitchen. Run don't walk:)
