Sylvia’s Restaurant

“So when my friends kept talking about how great Sylvia's was, I didn't make it a priority to make the trek to Harlem to try it.”

“My friend's collard greens cooked with turkey were also the best collard greens I've ever had.”

“for me i like Amy Ruths a little better but maybe i shall update this when i eat some new meals on here.”

  1. Another overrated / over – hyped nyc restaurant. We waited a good 30 mins to be seated on a Wednesday afternoon without reservations. I tried the salmon croquettes, mac and cheese, and some catfish. Nothing special at all. The drinks were good and strong though! Service was ok. I would not go there again.

  2. Awesome meals. Lived up to the reviews!

Granted it was a Sunday and quoted a 55 minute wait time….we were seated in 15 minutes!!!

    Can't wait to visit again.

An added plus was live music on Sunday's til 2 pm.

  3. I'm giving this place an extra star cause of its historical significance in the community of Harlem. The food was ok – I've had better southern cooked food. My friend had the fried chicken & waffles, which she thought were good, and I got their famous "finger lickin ribs". The ribs were not as tender as I would have liked and the BBQ sauce was ok. The mac n cheese had a lot of cheese, but again, I've had better. The portions are a good size though. As for the dessert, I had the red velvet cake (good) but my friend didn't like the banana bread pudding she ordered. She felt it had too much dough and not enough pudding.

  4. I ordered a ton of chicken, mac and cheese, and greens for my birthday picnic and everything was piping hot, on time, and delicious. Their house hot sauce is also pretty solid and worth buying a bottle of, especially since it's only $2.

  5. Another excellent visit!

-Food- This time I ordered the Harlem style chicken and waffles with a side of mac & cheese (not a far stretch from my last visit, lol). Just as delicious as the last time I was here! The waffles were warm and fluffy and perfect with the salty goodness that is fried chicken!

-Service- It was Friday night so, you can imagine the servers were busy. However, I did get all the things I asked for, AND the entire staff surprised me by singing happy birthday and some of the other patrons joined in (so embarrassing, but I secretly loved it!)

-Price- Perfectly reasonable! Generous helpings for the price!

-Did Not Like- Everything was good!

    -Recommended?- YES!!!

  6. I had dinner at Sylvia's and LOVED it.  The fried chicken was fantastic.  The mac & cheese was really fantastic, maybe the best mac & cheese I have ever had.  The collard greens were really great.  I already have plans to go back.  I am going to get the fried chicken and mac & cheese and may try the candied yams.

  7. I came here because of the hype. GREAT service, but I felt as though I've had better southern food. It is worth coming to check out and cross of your list as it is listed as one of the top spots in the city but I would venture into a diff spot for southern food and get some good ol friend chicken and ba ba ba banging ribs.

  8. Sorry but not a fan of Sylvia's. Pros: our server Amanda was great!! Friendly and fast. The cornbread was tasty and warm. Those of us that had the smothered chicken really enjoyed it. The waffles were good The outside patio is nice because the inside is small and tight.   Cons: pretty much everything else this party of 10 had was unremarkable to well just plain, bland and disappointing. Fish and grits. Bland. Salmon cakes bland and flour-y.  Macaroni and cheese and greens just really basic. I ordered the Harlem fried chicken and asked for gravy to see if I could give it Some flavor. Nothing stood out as being excellent or even really good.
