Definitely fell in love with this adorable little cafe. The fact that they have a wide variety of gluten-free baked goods was definitely a plus, but the selling factor for me was the newspapers and magazines available for reading (hence the name). Great space. Loved the decor. It's on the way to work for me so, needless to say, I will return.
Why does a simple cafe deserve 5 stars? Here's why…
– A wall of magazines you can read while you nosh and leave behind for free or purchase to take home (the unique lure)
– Everything bagels with seeds on top AND bottom (anything else is blasphemy)
– Veggie cream cheese with big chunks of veggies and fully integrated veggie flavor
– Gluten free & whole food items
– Fresh sandwiches, hot soups
– Cold Brew & a sweet creamy cold brew called Ca Phe Da
– if you're unsure of something, you may even get a free sample to entice you to decide quicker 😉
Cute sandwich shop with old school music from the jazz era. They have a wall of magazines for a collection and benches like elementary style to grub on. I love the classic feel of this place, but beware it could get quite busy during lunch time!
Just for taste:
1. Dulce de leche donut:
Not bad, but not the best I have tasted. It was flavorful, but not as soft and fluffy as I would have wanted. It was a huge! Fit the size of a tea cup plate fully, in other words about the size of your hand.
2. Roasted turkey panini with salad
The salad was very fresh and the panini cooked right. Definitely enough to fill you up for a nice lunch meal, but for the heavy eaters, you may need to add a little something something to your meal to top you off.
Have I found the best bacon, egg, and cheddar in the city? It would take too many days to try every place, but with one as good as this place has I don't think I need to. Seriously, their bacon, egg, and cheddar on a croissant is heaven. Service is friendly but they want to move through the line fast, you might feel rushed, but who cares with food this good. Coffee is top notch for drip (I haven't tried any espresso drinks). I've been coming for a while now, and everything has been consistent- excellent service, eggcellent, food, excellent coffee. It is tucked away underneath some scaffolding, but try to find it. I walked by it for years on my way to grad school and then on my way to work. I wish I had found it early. Inside it feels like an old NYC joint you'd see in an Edward Hopper painting. Plus, how cool is a place that plays the blues at 7am? It's way cool if you ask me. Nothing beats eating the best egg sandwich around while listening to Muddy Waters. Do yourself a favor and stop in here for breakfast.
My kind of coffeeshop! Chill, cozy, comfortable, and reasonably-priced (I feel like I should've kept the alliteration going). The coffee selection is small and standard but nonetheless pretty good, and the pastries are fresh and delicious and displayed incredibly temptingly. Shoutouts to the chocolate-cherry rugelach (very flaky although not very cherry) and the chocolate biscotti (goes perfectly with just black coffee).
I love the mix of long picnic-style tables and smaller seats in the back, as well as the offering of various magazines and newspapers along the wall. Huge plus: there are outlets all along the seats in the back! They were admittedly what drew me and my dying phone in in the first place. It's quite dark inside, but overall a downright wonderful coffeeshop to bring your computer to and get some work done or just chill in while charging your phone and nomming on delicious baked goods and coffee.
Nothing to rave or complain about at News Bar. I had an Americano and a crescent. Both were fine. Service was good. Paid the usual $7. Not much else to say!
*** Standard coffee and tea selections, Quick service, Limited seating ***
I seem to always come here when it is packed. The seating is very limited. Be expected to feel a bit squished. Their coffee and tea selections are standard–nothing that special about them. I haven't ventured towards their food items since it doesn't look appealing and it seems pricey. This is a place to visit if you're in a hurry but need to grab a quick drink.
Stopped by here late Saturday afternoon for a pick-me-up. I got an iced hazelnut latte and a s'mores brownie. A couple of the edges of the brownie were a little tough which made it difficult to cut into with a fork. I'm not sure if that's because it had been left out a while (after all, I did get there a little later in the day) or if that's just how it cooked. Once I got past that though, it was amazing. The latte was made well and not overly sweet like Starbucks lattes but just the right amount. It's a good-size space with lots of seating and staff are friendly. They have a pretty extensive food menu, as well, so I'd like to come back and try them for breakfast or lunch. Good option if you're looking for a place to chill with some good coffee and treats!
