  1. I love this place; even in jersey city, it is hard to find a place that hasn't changed in the last 30 years, and Our Hero is that kind of a place.  Cafeteria style seating and a no frills menu take you back to the days when you ate something because you were hungry and not to have some kind of experience.  Sandwich ingredients are fresher here than at the chain sandwich stores and prices are good.  Lots of different sandwich options, and some hot choices too.  Grab a sandwich and head over to Lee Sims for a chocolate for desert and you'll feel like a time traveler going back in time 30-40 years.

  2. Meat and cheese sliced to order, fresh veggies, and homemade bread- all ingredients that should result in a great sandwich. I got a good sandwich that was pretty enjoyable, but it wasn't as great as I was expecting. They don't have as much variety as the local sub shops I've been to- no smoked turkey (to their credit, they do have 3 other kinds of turkey), no cheddar (what!?), and no pepper jack. They do still offer a few different meat and cheese options as well as different kinds of veggies. You can order your sandwich hot or cold. My turkey sub with provolone, sweet peppers, and lettuce was tasty. Nothing exceptional that would make me coming back, but for sure a better option than Subway, Blimpie, etc.

I've tried to come here a few times before and they were always closed (it was usually later in the evening around 7 or 8) so I have no idea what their hours are but I do know that they are open on weekends. No delivery as far as I can tell and not much seating inside, but a great option if you are looking for a quick meal that is cheap but still good. My half sub was actually pretty big and was under $5! Who needs $5 footlongs?

  3. This shop is how all shops should make sandwiches.

Meats sliced in front of you to order. Sandwich toppings topped to your liking. That Ma & Pa service that is unparalleled to today's service world.

Downright delicious. Our Hero is now my hero when it comes to sandwich cravings, picnics in the park, or heading down to the beach.

Blah blah blah cash only, but who cares bc it's so good. Totally worth the extra stop to the ATM beforehand.

  4. It's been nearly 20yrs since I have been here but what memories does this place bring back. Many a times were we allowed to go here for a delicious sandwich. My go to? The pepper steak sandwich with cheese and all the fixin's. We didn't get to eat lunch outside our cafe but when we did, this was the go to place! I still remember the smell of walking in and the aroma of cold cuts, vinegar, onions and bread…Definitely on my list of Nostalgic Food Trip coming up…

  5. This place makes cheap and tasteful deli sandwiches. It is a mom and pop shop and the workers are very nice. In my opinion they make the best sandwiches in my neighborhood. I love ordering the hot pastrami, with a dose of sun chips! One negative is they only accept cash unfortunately.

  6. Imagine Subway but with super fresh ingredients, high quality turkey meats and a sweet older gentleman serving it up while giving you a history lesson about the store as well (been here since the '60's). This is no Italian deli, so don't channel 2nd St. Deli, Vito's or Luca Brasi's here, this was just a simple, fresh sandwich that rings in at $4.44 (turkey & cheese). Everything is hand sliced in front of you as you order and the shredded lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and crisp. No fresh mutz or roasted red peppers here, just a simple sub sandwich for a simple girl on a simple Saturday.

This is definitely a solid option for those living in JSQ & McGinley Square areas who want to avoid all the greasy chains and Latin food spots. I'd most certainly come again.

  7. Living in Jersey City for many years, I just never knew about this place. I went here for lunch because of the reviews of other Yelpers. Its located next to the farmer's grocery stand on Bergen Ave and across from Hudson Catholic High School. There's no parking so you have to find a meter spot or one of the off street parking on Glenwood Ave. You could almost miss it if you don't pay attention, no flashy signs just a very good sandwich shop. Inside has about a dozen tables or so. Also, this is a cash only place so make sure you have cash with you. They have chips and sodas on the side available for purchase as well.

Looking at the board I see that they have all the deli meats that you can choose from. Their items includes ham, salami, turkey, capicola, tuna, roast beef, and others. The meats are freshly sliced as you order not packaged like some other franchise sandwich stores. The vegetables are also freshly thin sliced and offer extra toppings like sweet peppers.   My selection was the number 10 "Our Hero" sandwich that includes roast beef, turkey, capicola, and salami. I topped it off with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo, vinegar, sweet peppers, and oregano. The moment I bit into the sandwich it was quite tasty, better than Blimpie and Subway. Overall, I enjoyed the sandwich and will be coming back again.

  8. This place gets so many bonus points for being a classic mom and pop shop that serves up a solid deli sub with genuine kindness.

Went in and got a #4 and it was all around what you would expect.  The bread was soft and chewy, the meats fresh (although nothing spectacular, but hey it's a hero shop, not gourmet Italian import extravaganza), toppings fresh and service awesome.  I got the sweet and hot peppers (couple cents extra) and it was just perfect for the price.  Great value for sure.

The owner/hero maker behind the counter is quiet but there's just a real sense of kindness and respect.  He may not be the chatter box but he treats you with the classic "Ms" or "Ma'am" without any phony-ness…and that is hard to come by these days.  Reminds me of a real bygone days.

Bottom line, if you want a solid sub at a great price and fresher than the chains, definitely come here!!!  Will certainly be back for any future sub cravings!!!
