  1. Any neighborhood would be lucky to have a place like Banyan Cafe.  First of all, the friendliness from the owners and staff is incomparable to any place I know. Next, the selection for this cozy 4 table petite cafe is extensive.  In the mood for a breakfast egg sandwich or croissant? They have it. Want a lunch salad, a smoothie, Banh Mi,  meatballs, sausage and peppers? They have it.  Just a cup of coffee and a few cookies? They have it.  And not only do they have the selection, but they make the effort to prepare everything top notch at a reasonable price. All sandwiches are made to order, even if they have to fry up the sausage and peppers on a hot plate for you.  The bread is always fresh. I could go on and on. Banyan is a great place and I'm a new regular.

  2. Good brunch or lunch for the low!

This place does your breakfast and lunch foods with fresh ingredients. From your standard sandwiches and breakfast items to Asian banh mi sandwiches Banyan does it all so well! The service is also very nice and quick! I loved the Banh Mi sandwich and the salad they had. Also be sure to try a cookie since it's equally as good as the food (love my sweets)!

If you're looking for a nice bite, light on your stomach as well as on your wallet go to Banyan!

  3. A solid deli style cafe a block off Grove St. I've been eyeing their banh mi for awhile now, so when asked where to lunch, I knew I needed to check it off the list. Seating is limited and the "cafe" is really a glorified deli with some tables. It's still got character and service was so nice, but definitely a very casual spot.

So, get to the point Steph… why go here? Sandwiches are cheap as hell! When I thought that Jersey City was turning into a city for those who can only afford it, this spot is the complete opposite. Portions aren't huge, says the fattie American, but perfect for lunch and at a really great price. My lunchmate and I went with the pork and chicken banh mi's and split them. Great flavor, chewy bread and lots of fresh veggies we know and love in a banh mi with slightly over cooked, but full of flavor meat. Far from authentic, but a solid option.

I noticed some reasonably priced smoothies, salads and treats making this a win!

  4. This is a very good deli perfect for lunch. I've been here on two separate occasions and both were splendid. I enjoyed the Vietnamese sandwich with chicken and second time around I got the tuna wrap. They were both very good and well prepared.

In addition, me and my gf have tried the Vietnamese coffee and a smoothie and they were both good. The Vietnamese coffee is sweet so beware, depending on how you like your coffee.

This is a small mom and pop shop and they are very social and nice people. They will take good care for you, enjoy!

  5. I really wish Yelp would do 1/2 stars, because I definitely felt this place is worth more than a 3 but less than a 4. 3.5!

I ate here 2 days in front because I had an orientation for my new job nearby. First thing I noticed that it is a cute, small business owner shop, which I love love love. There are 2 cute tables are outside seating and limited seating inside. My main issue however is though they do not have a fan or AC so it is ridiculous stuffy but it is humid outside, so no winning there. The ventilation is a bit off as well, I ate there both times, and by the time I left, my hair and clothes smelt like fried food. And that is my main reason for deducting stars.

Day 1, I originally wanted the pan con bistec sandwich, but they were out of steak, so I opted for the balsamic chicken sandwich.  The owner did give me a 0.50 cent discount for that, which was nice. It took about 15-20 mins to make tho, which was slightly longer than I thought it would. But anyways, the sandwich was decently sized. The chicken was a bit dry, but it was the balsamic and EVOO, however the sauce was on the saltier side, combo with the parm cheese, it was too salty for my taste, so I ended up just eating the bread and chicken. So a eh experience.

Day 2, I decided to order a head of time today so I wouldn't have to spend half my lunch break waiting for my sandwich, so I preordered and paid with Yelp24 and got a confirmation. However, when I got there, they told me they were having issue with their internet and the online orders weren't coming through, so I had to re-order and wait, which is another eh moment for me. But today they did have steak, so I opted for the pan con bistec. My sandwich came out this time in 10 mins, which is great. And this sandwich was super different from my first experience, cause it was amazing. The steak was super thin, the onions were caramelized well and super juicy, with the potato sticks and the chim sauce, ugh it was magical.

So again, I really would have liked to give them 3.5 stars, but I couldnt. That steak sandwich bumped them up. I'll be returning to try other items as I am still on the fence about them.

    Please get a fan!!!

  6. Looking for a quick, inexpensive and healthy lunch? Banyan is whats up. They've got plenty of sandwich, wrap, salad and smoothie options and everything is reasonably priced. Although Jersey City is lacking in the fast casual lunch department, it's small and independently owned spots like this that make up for it.

I wouldn't suggest eating inside because there isn't much seating and it's a bit stuffy. On a beautiful day, it's a great excuse to take your lunch to go and sit out and enjoy in Van Worst park. Their banh mi and cuban both sounded delicious, but because I wanted something a little bit lighter and more refreshing I went with a chicken caesar wrap. The wrap was huge and I ended up making two meals out of it. My lunch companion went with a banh mi. It had a ton of pork and a really good spicy sauce and he loved it. His only complaint was that it wasn't typical bread for a banh mi and was a bit too soft.

My wrap was 5.50 and his sandwich was 6.50, which you pretty much can't beat. Judging by their other reviews, it seems like most feel the same way!

  7. I've been here a few times and I'm definitely a fan. The banyan cafe offers sandwiches, wraps, omelets, drinks as well as other goodies. I could only speak on behalf of the sandwiches and drinks. The sandwiches are made to order and use very fresh ingredients. Trust me you taste a difference, and know it was made with love and care. I am vietnamese myself so I've tried both the sandwich and the coffee. If you're into the traditional kind this one isn't for you because it is a rendition of the "banh mi" just to make things clear. However I enjoyed it. I honestly don't like all the pate and the tons of pickled vegetables, seriously some places really go overboard. But this one doesn't have those things instead it's light with a few vegetables, and well seasoned chicken breast. The vietnamese coffee was good however was a little more sweet than I would like, so I should've taken the suggestion when they told me to get two shots lol. I also tried as well the bright street club sandwich with turkey, avocado, lettuce and tomatoes that is one of my go to's as well. The smoothies are great though you get a lot of fruit flavors instead of so much yogurt and what not. Kudos to the couple that own this establishment they are always a pleasure to talk to and to get to know more.

  8. First the coffee here is crack. I don't think I remember the last time I enjoyed iced black coffee as much as I did today…. jeez it was so good. It's 9pm and I'm craving it. AND IM NOT EVEN A COFFEE DRINKER LIKE THAT!

I got the Avo salad with chicken- dressing was awesome. good amount of fresh avo (not brown and old). The chicken was a bit rubbery. which is why they lost a star for me.

Service was great. the cashier was really patient and answered all my annoying questions without giving me any attitude.

A lot of regulars here, the cashier knew them by first name and knew exactly what they were ordering. Everyone that ordered got the bahnmi. So I will definitely have to try that next time.

definitely recommend for a healthy salad or any of their coffee drinks! outdoor seating available too!
