When selecting Yelp 5 Stars, you get a popup that says, and I quote, "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" In this case, the description's on point. Proof is that parking in Millburn totally sucks yet they're pretty much jammed from the minute they open until the time they close. The Millburn Deli is phenomenal. If I didn't live 45 minutes away, I would eat lunch there literally 7 days a week. Their sandwiches are just about the best I've had, as is everything else they sell. There are a ton of people behind the counter so you shouldn't let the throngs of hungry patrons dissuade you. Service is quick, polite and attentive. There's even a well decorated room next door where you can sit down and eat or powder your nose in the spotlessly clean bathrooms.
I have no idea who concocts the layout of their sandwiches but whomever he or she is, is a genius. Flavors blend together flawlessly and compliment their virtually limitless breads and rolls. Their Griller Sandwiches are literally poetic in their deliciousness. It's one of those places where I see something I want to order, make a decision and then see something I like just a little bit more. This is repeated many times over until I just choose something randomly and go for it. I guess there's really not much difference between excellent, phenomenal and delicious; all terms that I'm sure you'll be using when you pay them a visit.
When I started going to the deli in high school I didn't eat meat, but I still enjoyed my trips here. I would order fresh mozzarella, tomato, and grilled veggies, with pesto or balsamic vinaigrette on a baguette, grilled. Just thinking about that sandwich is making me hungry. I used to make sure to pick one up on the way home from all my visits during college too. I've since come to my senses and taken up eating meat. While that sandwich holds a special spot in my heart I've explored a lot of their grillers and other combinations. The Gobbler is of course delicious. If it weren't for all the pie I eat on Thanksgiving, I would say it does Thanksgiving better than Thanksgiving itself. The mac'n'cheese and premade pasta salads are also good if you aren't in a sandwich mood. My sister and mom love their sloppy joe. They now have seating next door which makes the experience a little less hectic. Definitely a must try, thinking about jumping on plane back home right now to get one. Has all the snow been cleared yet?
I'm from Jersey City, so going to Millburn is a bit of a journey for me. That being said, there are 2 main reasons why I come to Millburn:
South Mountain Reservation: the park & trail that's conveniently located across the train station
And …
Millburn Deli.
I lie to myself and say I go to Millburn for the hike but the during the whole trip, I'm thinking about the sandwiches I'm going to order from the deli. Honestly, the hike is just a precursor/warmup for chow time. I know what you're thinking. They're just sandwiches. How good can they possibly be? I was wrong.. We all are …
Anyway … you can't go wrong with the Godfather or the Cuban sandwich if you have a hard time choosing from their big menu. I can't wait to come back and try their much-advertised Gobbler – their ode to Thanksgiving sandwich. I do admit, its a bit pricy for sandwiches but the portions are generous and I know I sure as hell can't make one this good at home so I think it's more than worth it.
The Millburn Deli will make you an offer you can't refuse with their vast array of sandwiches available. The Griller 8 and The Godfather are the most mouthwatering, amazing sandwiches ever. Take my word for it. You won't be disappointed!
This past weekend was my first time in Millburn and to be honest, there wasn't much to see. I've been to Edgewater and Fort Lee and while they're more alluring, Millburn has one thing to offer (besides my boyfriend) – THIS DELI. As soon as I woke up on Sunday morning, I sought out this deli and the infamous "Gobbler" sandwich. It totally lives up to the hype. How could it not?? It's literally thanksgiving on an enormous sandwich. If you love thanksgiving and wish it were thanksgiving everyday like moi, I highly recommend you try it. I also got chicken noodle soup on the side and you could tell it was freshly made that morning. My boyfriend is going back home for the weekend and I've already asked him to bring back a gobbler sandwich to Boston. I'm patiently waiting for Monday to come along. That's a first.
Talk about a place that gets PACKED during lunchtime. Well worth it if you have a few minutes to wait. The staff works quickly and efficiently to get everyone served ASAP. My complaint is more for the customers during the busy time: Please be more self aware while here, as well as in life in general. If a place is chaotic, hang up your phone and focus on moving out of the way while you are waiting for your order.
Yes, you are in the way.
Yes, you.
I'm looking at you.

Great sandwiches though, especially the "grillers". I was a fan of the cuban sandwich and the tri-tip sandwich.
They also have a pretty big salad selection.
There is some space to sit outside, especially on a nice day, but the tables get snatched up fast.
They cater too!
Giuseppe. Joe Cool. Cup o' Joe. GI Joe. Josephus. Joey. JoJo. SLOPPY JOE!
What's in a name? That which we call a sandwich, by any other name would taste as delicious. Much like the feuding Montague and Capulet families, the war over the Sloppy Joe sandwich rages on and the history runs deep in these parts of Jersey. As the story allegedly goes, a former elected official from Maplewood discovered this magical creation while in Cuba and solicited the Town Hall Deli in South Orange to recreate it for him. He said, she said, not really sure who to believe here, but I do know that the Millburn Deli makes one hell of a Sloppy Joe, among other things.
In case you've never heard of this (which I hadn't before moving out here), this is not the Chef Boyardee-esque Sloppy Joe of your childhood, with BBQ ground beef on a hamburger roll. This is a double decker club sandwich on rye with varying combinations of meats (popular versions include pastrami, ham, turkey, corned beef, etc.), Swiss cheese, cole slaw and Russian dressing. At first, I didn't really like the sound of it, but GOT DAYUM. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. This thing has a story and people fight over it, that alone should intrigue you enough to try it.
What's more, Millburn Deli has a ton of other amazing sandwiches like The Godfodda, Cubano, Chipotle Chicken, various Italian subs, and essentially any other combination you can dream up. Basically, if you're preparing for a sandwich orgy, these guys should be your suppliers. The dudes behind the counter are no BS, but they work quickly like a well-oiled machine, and they also do catering. I have ordered platters a couple times for parties and they're always a hit. I freakin love this place and although I have had to forego a visit during peak hours more than once (it can be a complete mob scene here), I return again and again. Bottom line, this deli rocks and if you haven't checked them out, you need to get on that.
Yours truly,
Just some average Joe
There is something comforting about having a sandwich in New Jersey. On my first visit to the quaint town of Millburn, I found a number of restaurants, but none had the crowds to rival the Millburn Deli. The large selection reminded me of an independent Booeymongers. This is a family-style deli with multiple workers where you take a ticket, and they treat you like family. I had the Italian cold cut with some banana peppers and a little Southern mayo. If only they had some of these in Manhattan instead of Chick-Fill-A I would be very happy. Maybe this type of deli is what defines the suburbs? I cannot wait to return here and try the BLT, and the sloppy joe! Jersey Baby!
