My chicken caesar wrap was a little dense, expensive, and had no caesar dressing on it. The lady at the checkout was a tad bit rude. When I was trying to pull out the money to pay for my order, she states, "oh he's faster" and puts down my order and goes to the guy next to me. After she finally rang me up, instead of putting my items in a bag, she goes to the guy who was supposedly faster than me and runs his credit card! The guy working next to her looks at me like, oh you want a bag? No, I want to struggle walking up the block on this unusually windy day with all of my items in my hand.
Doubtful that I will be back for anything other than something to drink on my way back from the nail salon.
My colleague received a menu from a guy on the street which had a large variety of items that the deli was offering. We decided to check it out. Walking into the deli, it was very small, only about 15'x15' with a flight of stairs that goes upstairs where the beverages and about 10 tables are located.
The food varied from simple sandwich specials (one meat, cheese, dressing) with a beverage for $7.50, to premade paninis and other sandwiches, to some pastas in the glass counter. The food on the menu did not appear to be like the items I had seen in the menu my colleague received, and I believe it may have been for the Green Cafe located a street away at 115 W 57th St.
I decided to go for the Grilled Chicken and Avocado with mesclun greens and a vinegarette dressing on foccacia bread for $6.95 + tax = $7.53. As I was watching the guy make the sandwich, I noticed the avocado he was spooning out of the shell did not look very fresh. After he spread the avocado on the bread, he threw the mesclun greens on and went to get the grilled chicken that was already cooked in one of the glass counters. As he was getting the chicken, I noticed a fly landed on my sandwich. One of the other guys behind the counter just glanced at the sandwich sitting on the table, and looked away. I think he saw me looking in a bit of shock and disgust, and eventually and lazily swung his hand around the sandwich to scare the fly away. I was a bit disgusted at this point and was not sure how the other guy heated the grilled chicken, but I believe he just nuked it in the microwave, sliced it up and threw it on the sandwich followed by the vinegarette dressing. I didn't feel like complaining so I went up to pay for my sandwich.
Service was a bit slow as the cashier charged my meal but did not have a pen so he started walking around the back looking for a pen. After a minute or two, the other cashier gave a sigh and gave me her pen on her ear to sign the receipt.
I finally took my sandwich up to one of the tables upstairs where my colleagues were sitting. I noticed the chicken portions were very small in the sandwich and only filled up about 2/3 of the sandwich leaving a lot of bread. The chicken was pretty tender but slightly dry, but the avocado did not taste very fresh. The vinegarette dressing was a bit weak and a little more could have been spread on the chicken which would have complemented the chicken beautifully with a nice balance of acidity and flavor.
I now noticed why this deli was somewhat empty with only about 4-6 other patrons in the store eating at primetime (12:30 pm – 1:30 pm). With slow service, unsanitary conditions, I will not be coming back to this deli.
Beggars can't be choosers and I was definitely a beggar by the time I ended up in here. I was headed to Fika for a cup of coffee, but of course, they were closed on a SUNDAY. So I was screwed and had to visit this place. This area doesn't have many options so this might actually be your best bet. Sigh. FML.
I has a small minestrone soup and they have some VEGAN options here (SALADS/SOUPS), so you won't be left in the cold, but it won't be of high-quality.
Just get what you need, feed that hunger and get out.
Not sure if this is the right Green Cafe…I went to the one near FAO toy store..but I don't think I've ever had coffee as gross as this place! I found coffee in NY to be pretty below average overall but this place was just nasty. I ordered a Caramel latte and it tasted like nasty milky medicine. The workers weren't very friendly and didn't know what they were doing either. Ugh.
