Why oh why do I have to give In N Out one star. I really didn't want it to come to this, but from the experience I had, this rating is well deserved.
I am writing a review based on my delivery experience. I ordered my food at 12:45pm on a Saturday. I went with the $5 pan fried dumplings and chicken fried rice deal, and added an an Almond Bubble Milkshake to my order. I asked how long my order will take, and the woman on the phone said 15-20 minutes. Well at 1:18pm my order still didn't arrive so I gave them a call to check in, the same woman told me the delivery guy is on his way. 10 minutes later, still no show. Just as I was about to cancel my order, he buzzes my door at 1:30pm. My order took 45 minutes to arrive, and I only live one block away.
About the food: First off, my food wasn't pipping hot – STRIKE ONE. I was expecting traditional pan fried dumplings, instead I had huge, soggy balls of meat and excess dough. Plus, the chicken fried rice was bland, and the pieces of chicken in it were strange – STRIKE TWO. But the saddest part of my order was the Almond Bubble Milkshake. It was way too sweet, more like an ice drink than a milkshake, and the tapioca pearls were rock hard – STRIKE THREE, they are out!
Maybe this place is literally meant for people to physically go In N Out, and not for delivery services.
NOTE ABOUT THE 3 STAR RATING: Please read the comments under FOOD – the rating is simply an average. In a nutshell, the pastries here are worth 5 stars but I will leave the other things behind.
THE INTRO: I love my neighborhood, but I definitely am saddened by how out of my way I have to go to get certain goods, like my Asian pastries.
So let's rewind a bit — in case you aren't familiar with the art of Asian pastries, there are standards that you'll find in just about any bakery — coconut cream buns, custard buns, angel food cakes are just some of them. I grew up off of them, so you can only imagine my excitement when In n Out opened in the neighborhood.
The service is great – the folks who work there are really sweet and friendly. Now on to the food:
THE FOOD:
The FRESH pastries are amazing. Like, absolutely delicious and beautifully made, and taste fantastic. So I'm talking about basically what's on the trays when you walk in — croissants, cookies, buns, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts — all amazing. These are EASILY a 5 star. The baker here don't play. I've had their almond cookies and their mini macaroons – those are pretty tasty. I spoke with the owner and the cake logs are popular but I am not a fan of those, so haven't given those a try. Everything here is under $2. My recommendations are the apple turnovers, the angel food cake, and anything puff pastry based.
The SAVORY menu – I have had the dumplings and they are handmade and taste pretty good, but are definitely on the oilier side. Also, I ordered the Mei Fung and it was on the dry side (although they made it to order…).
The DRINKS – as far as it seems, most of their bubble teas are made from powders and personally, that just ain't my thing. I love bubble tea to death, but it's just not happening for me.
All in all, as I've stated, go for what's fresh. I hope as they get settled into the business, the owners can perhaps revamp the savory and drink part of their menus.
It really, really pains me to do this. I don't want to do this, but I cannot not do it. I have to strip a few stars. It pains me because I adore the owners. They're always super friendly and sometimes chatty. They're good folks and I want them to succeed!
A few things:
The specials have changed. The bargains I went for are no longer there or they're only available at certain times. Menus and specials change. I get that. That in itself is no biggie. It's fine.
I'm REALLY mad about the dumplings. If you peak at my last review, I had a whole section about the skin of the dumplings not being crazy thick. Well, that has changed. On my last visit, just a week ago, the dumpling skins were absurdly thick and doughy (like the crap you'd find at Vanessa's). I dug out the meat and tossed the dough. What I waste!
And then I got absurdly thirsty and no amount of water could quench my thirst.
