Being a member in a CSA has forced me to include vegetables and fruits in my diet, but the best part is finding new exotic vegetables that I've never seen before! I run home and start googling the vegetable and recipes. So far I've enjoyed, purple potatoes from Peru, Sun artichokes from the mediterranean, purple tomatillos from Mexico and green eggs from special South American chickens! This is a great experience for me and my daughter to learn about delicious and nutritious new foods! Thanks to their success, they now have another CSA, the Einstein CSA, by Eastchester Rd. also in the Bronx.
It's about 3 weeks in to my CSA for this season and I must say I enjoy it. I am not a picky eater. I eat all plant-based foods, so getting fennel or kohlrabi is great! I am a vegan so I eat mostly veggies – a full share is definitely a good quantity. I usually juice whatever produce I have left over or freeze.
In terms of pricing and risk, I think the CSA is worth it. So far, the season has been well. Yes the veggies are dirty! But a little dirt never hurt and its far better than having bleached veggies.
I would recommend joining a CSA in your neighborhood. The produce is a lot fresher than the supermarket and its local. The CSA has most of the same vendors and items you would see at the farmers' market for less.
The pick-up is now located at the Bainbridge Garden on 201 and Bainbridge.
