  1. Kat waited on me this time and she was warm, sunny, polite and she answered every question I had. Awesome.

  2. Such a treat for the purveyor of delicious gourmet grain free goodies. Perfect for celiac and gluten intolerant folks but yummy enough for the diner who could care less. Just don't expect an allergy free place since lots of things have nuts!

Tucked into a strip center in downtown this Millburn bakery/cafe is a great place to get take-home baked goodies or to grab a soup and sandwich. The menu is limited but the breakfast sandwiches and salads were fresh and tasty. The cafe au lait and all espresso drinks are prepared with a professional machine.

All soups are dairy free and the cauliflower selection today was flavorful and thick yet light! The kale salad was dressed with lemon and olive oil and had a nice spicy kick to it. The sweet savory combo of spice and dried dates was perfect. And the samples of zucchini bread were something out of this world..sweet and moist. Cannot believe it was grain free, but it definitely is.

The granola to go looked amazing and comes in a few flavors.and I can't wait to try the dairy free frozen "ice cream" treats. Admittedly all of these specialty goods come with a high price tag but the ingredients are super high quality and this should be expected. The owner was there and she clearly takes a lot of pride in this new venture. Very hands on and service is super friendly.

Such a nice addition to downtown where bakeries are abundant, but kind of generic and the lunch options are just in need of some fresh new spots!

  3. So overwhelmed by all of the amazing choices when I first walked in. Squirrel & The Bee has been on my list for a long time and I'm glad I made the trip.

For breakfast, I was torn between the Acai Bowl and the Breakfast Porridge. The extremely kind employee told me they were both delicious. I chose the Porridge since I make Acai Bowls at home often. It was made from groats, sliced almonds and mixed berries, served warm over coconut milk- delicious and filling. I also ordered a tea (some sort of vanilla, which was really great as well)!

The real reason for the 5 stars are the goodies I brought home- a vegan chocolate chip cookie, PB&J brownie and two beegels. My favorite so far is the vegan chocolate chip cookie- definitely going to need to go back for more of those and some of their "ice cream". Another pro- I asked for the nutrition info on the beegels and received it minutes later. Awesome customer service both in and out of the store! The only thing to be careful about is overindulging in the deliciousness, as the fat content is high (good fats) on most of the goodies since they're grain free and nut based! Hard since it's all so good.

Soups and sandwiches looked amazing as well, can't wait to return for lunch!

  4. A uniquely amazing place like no other.  Man do I love my carbs… Pasta, Sandwiches, Bagels, and sure why not the occasional muffin.   This place allows you to have all of this (minus the pasta) without the crash and bloating of being a Carboholic.

The menu is helpful, but they have many other items not features on it… Manchego Grilled Cheese with Pesto, Vegetarian Pot Pie, Quiche, and apparently waffles on Sundays which another patron was raving about when we were there.

Eating grain free years or Paleo is the best I ever felt, but I missed the occasional sandwich and thanks to the Squirrel and the Bee, I can have my cake and eat it too literally.  There baked goods are all natural, home made, and healthy.  Many are high in protein as they are created with nut flours and everything we tasted so far has been delicious.

Sure the prices are a bit higher, but if you eat grain free then you probably know the price of almond flour and similar ingredients.

Not sure about the comments on staff organization, I found them incredibly helpful and friendly although we have only been here 2 times.

Everyone needs to support this one of a kind place!

  5. Not sure where the best parking is for getting to this place but alas we did get here. Love the idea that all of the items for sale are coded:

    V – Vegan
    G – Grain / Gluten Free
    D – Dairy Free
    S – Specific Carbohydrate Diet
    P – Paleo Diet

Makes it super easy to figure out what fits into what you are looking for without a lot of asking. When it comes to the food itself I think the problem found with most products trying to look like something else you might make a purchase looking for the identical experience you may have come to love with other ingredients — instead of doing what is a far better route — finding new loves in alternative diets that make you forget those things you thought you could never do without.

Having an egg and avocado sandwich for lunch I was very satisfied, and much fuller than expected, even with the 'bread' reminding me more of a muffin than true bread. It works and the dessert we picked up for later worked too.

I am surprised with the $$ pricing. How this place compares with other stores of its type I do not know. What I can say, however, is I left with a lighter wallet than I imagined going in — yet the value for what those dollars bought I would still go as far to say was pretty good.

  6. The coffee is good here and non-Starbucks or Dunkin in New Jersey is always preferable to me.  They have all kinds of vegan and gluten free pastries.  I tried one and to me too dry.  The coffee was hot and made to my liking and that's why I've come back.  Only downside there are way too many soccer moms with their kids incapable or ordering and holding everyone up while they yak on their cell phones.  If they had a coffee only line I might go four stars.

  7. Great little place. I am not necessarily gluten, dairy, grain, etc free but my wife is so more often than not I find myself eating the same as she.

Squirrel and the bee did not disappoint. We had the cinnamon swirl muffin which was the special of the day and it was very good. You can tell it is a healthier version but that's not a bad thing as it was still packed with flavor.

We both had breakfast sandwiches, one egg and guac and one egg and cheese. The guac was really flavorful and the bun was surprisingly light and fluffy which is not usually the case with gluten/grain free.

We missed the blueberry waffles since they weren't on a menu anywhere and totally had buyers remorse when we saw a batch go to the table next to us. Oh well reason to come back again on a Sunday.

Met the owner who cares a ton about this lifestyle, she makes her own coconut milk and almond milk daily in the back. They use this to make ice cream as well, my wife tried a sampler and said it was very good. Anyway the owner and all of her staff were very friendly and willing to explain any and everything on their huge menu.

The prices are a little high but it's totally understandable for the level of ingredients and the fact that everything is basically hand crafted. Plus if you eat this way you know variety is something your diet lacks – not here. Tons of choices with each looking tastier than the one before.

Great little setting, lots of locals, and good eats. Give it a look.

  8. Gluten free virtually everything!
We were attending a party that recommended gluten free sweets. Tasted their pumpkin bread and it was on par with ones that are filled with gluten!
It's a café where you can sit down and eat in as well.
    Assortment of sweets for everyone.
Cookies weren't a huge hit but their cakes were.
    ENJOY!
