Visiting BYM Poultry this month was my first experience with purchasing fresh (live, then butchered on the spot) poultry: both chicken and turkey. Duck, pig and a variety of other meat is available as well.
Buying poultry this way was definitely an experience to "get through" as far as I'm concerned. It's not for the faint of heart because you are very close to the end to end process: weighing the live bird, processing and bagging. The odor within the establishment, although probably inherent at this type of place, was a little tough to deal with as well. Although clean (they were constantly hosing the floor down while we were there), it has a ripe smell to it.
We bought two good sized chickens earlier in the month at a cost of $17. The 14 pound turkey came in at $28. While the meat is obviously fresh, I recommend letting it sit for at least a day because in both cases the meat was a little bit on the tough side, having eaten it on the same day we bought it.
Parking on the street is available, but tight. If you can't find a spot nearby, there's a small pay lot around the corner on Washington Street.
So if you're OK with driving in to Paterson (we had no issues whatsoever) as well as the environment within this type of establishment, I find BYM to be a good option for purchasing extremely fresh and inexpensive poultry.
