So glad I found this hole in the wall bake shop on Yelp! I've visited several times and have had the regular sponge cake, the green tea sponge cake, and the almond cookies. All are so delicious and best of all so cheap! My favorite would probably be the green tea sponge cake. It's so flavorful and fluffy! I want more!
I stopped by here really quickly just for a $0.75 sponge cake. I saw this place on the Fung Bro's youtube channel I think and just stumbled upon it in Chinatown.
The sponge is totally worth it – light, fluffy, eggy, lightly sweetened. Pretty much a perfect sponge cake. I highly recommend it, especially for people who have never had sponge before
Location: Chinatown
This place is like a community center where elder chinese will come together and chat with each other.
When i first got here, i was a little bit baffle … Because.. its more of a community center, instead of bakery shop.
I was quickly moving to a place where i think they would sell bakeries
I felt like it was bit late so thay didn't show any sample cupcake …
So I went with my gut and chose chocolate…
It was okay
Price is cheap
Service is impatient

Formerly Dinkies, this place now has the best sponge cakes in the city. Their cakes are just the top part of a normal sponge cake aka The Best Part. Pretty dense for a sponge cake – but not dense like triangle cake. Multiple flavors (eg. Green Tea), too.
They also have a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 arcade machine!
After reading that these sponge cakes were supposedly legendary, I was so excited to get one for myself. It was pretty awesome to see the Hispanic guy manning the counter speaking Cantonese. I'm not sure if he also speaks Mandarin, but I would be very pleasantly surprised if he does.
I love paper wrapped cakes, but I think I set my expectations too high after reading all the reviews. These small cakes are $0.75 for the original, $1.25 for flavored. The cakes were not as light and fluffy as I thought.
The first time I came I ordered an original and a green tea. The original one is somewhat lighter than the green tea. I couldn't really taste the green tea flavor but it has more texture. i wasn't amazed by the texture. I read later that the hot, freshly baked one were a lot better.
I came a second time after buying groceries to see if it made any difference. Luckily, the second time I came, they just took a fresh batch out of the oven. They'll default give you the ones sitting on the counter, but if you ask, they'll give you the hot ones. The fresh ones were somewhat more moist, but still not up to par of what I expected in terms of texture. I did really enjoy the chocolate chip one mainly because any chocolate chip studded cake is just delicious.
I've had amazing paper wrapped cakes from Asian supermarkets in central NJ (Kam Man in Edison, Asian Food Market in North Plainfield), which were large, super fluffy, eggy, and moist (almost like Japanese cheesecake) even though they weren't straight out of the oven. The ones here were really small, dry, and dense in comparison. These were still tasty, but by no means were they legendary. Pretty average if you ask me. Still, not sure what all the hype is with these cakes.
For an original paper wrapped cake, I wouldn't really come here, but I would definitely come here to get the flavored ones for the novelty of it.
On a side note, be careful not to eat paper wrapped cakes too quickly. I did and had that awful feeling of it getting stuck in your esophagus. Unfortunately, I did not have any water so had to cough uncontrollably until it went down. Always happens to me when I eat these kind of cakes too quickly.
You cannot miss the big yellow sign indicating "the best sponge cake in town." 75 cents for a sponge cake or pay additional for flavored sponge cakes. The couple times I came here, I saw people buying the sponge cakes in multiple dozens. The original sponge cake is soft and rich in eggs flavor. I tried some flavored ones like green tea and chocolate also, they are also excellent. If you stopped by at the right time, they would have fresh out-of-the oven sponge cakes where the the edges are crusty and the center is hot and fluffy. I would recommend stopping by this coffee shop to grab a relatively light dessert – sponge cakes, next time you are in Chinatown.
Sponge cakes, Chinese style.
If you want some cheap and tasty pastry it bakery. You can always trust this shop.
Best sponge cakes ever. Stick to the original flavor of sponge cake, I've tried a few of the flavored sponge cakes and they're not nearly as good. Plus, the flavored ones are more expensive – don't even bother with them.
