If sugar squared is cotton candy, what's sugar cubed?
We passed this place on the way to ramen and the modern interior piqued our interest. We swung by for a quick bite of dessert, and we're glad we stopped by.
We opted for the cheesecake and the chocolate mousse cube. The cheesecake was slightly disappointing for a few reason. First, it was way too dense, to the point where it was hard to cut through the cake. The flavor was pretty mellow and a good sweetness level, but something just felt a little off. Also, I didn't like the filo pastry at the bottom. It made it even harder to cut through the cake and made a huge mess on the table
The chocolate mousse was something else though. So beautiful on the outside and in, the spoon could not cut through this masterpiece any easier. The chocolate flavor was so smooth and rich, and we were surprised with the cake layer on the inside. We sampled the gelato while deciding on desserts and rich chocolate was definitely a common theme. You can't go wrong either way.
I loved my experience here!
The place is so cute and organized very well. It's like there's a structure to it. There is a standing table with a usbcharging outlet which was the least most amazing thing at this place. (That means it was )
As soon as my friend and I walked in we had a million questions and most staff gates being asked but the two guys behind the counter were AMAZING.
Super friendly and helpful in the difficult process of choosing from all the choice!
Honestly I went straight for gelato and asked about their personally flavored creations. After kindly handing me samples and describing flavors I ended up getting three flavors which I though was so great because it costs the same to get one or three flavors in their medium sized container.
I got the chocolate hazel which was a perfect combination of sweet and chocolate with a hit of the nutty. The salted caramel, and the pistachio which was freshy made and was magnificent!
Personally loved this place will be returning!
I ended up sampling almost all of their gelato flavors and my personal favorites were the mango and salted caramel. The mango is light and refreshing, so good on a hot day. Whereas the salted caramel is much more decadent and sweeter. We ended up choosing a small cup and got to split the scoop to two flavors: salted caramel and dark chocolate. The dark chocolate wasn't very bitter, but it helped balance out the sweetness of the salted caramel.
Onto the tiramisu, I didn't enjoy it as much as the gelato. The cake wasn't very soft (kinda like it was stored somewhere too cold so it hardened up) and that made it difficult to scoop too. I'd stay away, but especially if you're wearing a white shirt because it gets quite messy when you're trying to scoop everything and the black powder kind of just spills everywhere…Other than that, I did like the mascarpone cream. But I felt that the ratio of cake to cream was off — it needed more cake.
The service is great and the owner is clearly passionate about his store and products. Peter saw how the gelato was dripping on the side of the cup and was nice enough to place it in a big cup for us, so it'd be easier for us to eat. Definitely check out this place for their gelato if you're in the area!
We've only had the gelato here so this review is mostly based on that. It was okay. The flavor choices are not vast. We tried almost every single flavor and could barely pick any we liked enough to get. We wanted to like this place a little more because we need a good ice cream/dessert place in LIC but this wasn't it. Worth it if you're a local with a sweet tooth but not worth traveling for.
Ever since seeing a picture of one of their desserts on my friend's Instagram, I bookmarked Sugarcube on Yelp. Finally, I was able to check it out today with one of my friends. Even despite the gloomy weather, we made the trek from Bayside to Long Island City to indulge in some sweets. Personally, I knew I was not gonna be hindered by a few drops of rain! NO WAY! To satisfy my sweet tooth, there is no such thing as TOO FAR! Now that's dedication!! RAWR!! #Fatpplproblems #GetOnMyLevel
Conveniently located just off Vernon Blvd, Sugarcube is located in a very busy part of L.I.C, close to many popular restaurants like Cafe Henri, and Casa Enrique and Tuk Tuk. Also a block away from the 108th Pct of the NYPD (Random fact..lol). From the outside, doesn't look like much. Floor to ceiling glass window and door. Once inside, decor was very clean, simple and modern. Small seating area to the side. They do have a clean bathroom that patrons can use (If that matters to you..loll). Simple glass displays with the desserts, pastries and gelato that they offer. The guy behind the counter was very courteous and knowledgeable about all their pastries. Through conversation, found out he used to work at the Bean & Bean on Northern Blvd in Bayside. (Another random fact..loll).
My friend and I both agreed that their desserts looked so cute and artistic, they looked almost too pretty to eat! LOL After much deliberation, we decided on a Lemon Meringue tart, a Chocolate Mousse cake and 2 mini chocolate truffles (sparkling wine and whiskey). Once we sat down, we spent a good 10mins taking pictures of the pastries.. xD
Taking a bite of my chocolate mousse, and coupled with the peaceful classical music playing in the background, I felt like I was transported to some private black tie event, champagne in my other hand! My friend's Lemon Meringue was pretty good too. Flavor of the lemon curd was one of the richest I've ever tasted, but the overall dessert was light and fluffy. I also really liked the whiskey chocolate truffle, which was rich with a smooth filling with just a hint of whiskey. Didn't really taste the sparkling wine, which I thought was masked by the sweetness of the white chocolate.
Overall, an excellent addition to the Vernon Blvd area of L.I.C. I will definitely be returning in the future! 😀
The owner Peter seems to really enjoy interacting with customers. He allowed us to try many of the Gelato here before making a final decision. We got the Nociola which was sweet, creamy and rich in flavor. The Gelato here is excellent in its consistency. We also tried the lemon cheesecake kataifi which was a little too sweet and very strong with the lemon flavor. The kataifi adds a nice afditional texture and i enjoyed the sweet yet very unique flavor of it. It's a very rich and decadent cheesecake and a bit to thick for my liking. Definitely try out their gelatos!
Love this place! can't believe I've never been here when it's right off the subway station home. They have a cool selection of flavors on gelatos. I really liked their. st.germain pear and olive oil. Quite interesting and cute! Owner is also very nice! i love this place. Will def come back for more regular coffee sessions.
The gelato here is amazing and so fresh. The pistachio is my favorite. Apparently they fly their pistachios in special from Greece. This is high quality stuff.
Their pastries and chocolates are so unique- literal works of art. The espresso tart is perfect if you're obsessed with chocolate. It's so decadent. Bring some sweets from Sugarcube to party or dinner and everyone will be totally impressed!
