This place is dark and feels like I was sitting in the 1920s. Some people might like this interior, but its a hate it or love it place.
As for the pie, it was A-ok..
Got the green tea custard pie and the blueberry gooseberry pie.
Both were a bit overly sweet, but they have water on the side if you need.
Blueberry gooseberry pie was super sour, I ended up just eating the crust.
Service in the front was a bit rude, cashier seemed to be mad when you don't explicitly say "PIE" or "Slice." I can see the frustration customers can put on the workers here, but chills…no need to have attitude.
Lot of hipsters and tourist here hogging the seats with their laptops. Hate it when they hog the seats up and all they have is a empty plate and 3/4 finished cup of joe…
Okay, finally went in even though I was more sad than hungry and decided to fill that hole with pie like a responsible grown up. BUT even if you are happy, sad, or just HUNGRY go here and get pie. The space was really cute, lots of table and chairs and free WIFI and bottomless stumptown coffee. Oh, and you might have heard that they have good pie. THEY DO AND IT IS WONDERFUL. I got the caramel apple because you have to start with a classic, but I want that macha slice next.
I need to try more of the different varieties of pie that are sold here. After swiping through numerous accolades that Yelp reviewers have bestowed upon this establishment, my desire to try out Four & Twenty Blackbirds grew with each passing day. I finally made the trip after what seemed to be a never ending grueling walk from Prospect Park. My companion and I, stomachs growling from our intense workout, happily settled on a slice of the Salted Caramel Apple Pie.
There were not many choices on the menu when we walked in, but as soon as we sat to eat our pies, two interesting flavors were added to the menu. At a whopping $5.75/slice, I'm thinking in my mind that these so-called "slices of heaven" better be that damn good. Unfortunately, I don't have a clear verdict. I can't decide whether I like or hate this slice of pie that I just had.
Pros:
-made from scratch, fresh out of the oven.
-not super sweet
-you get exactly what the pie is named for; I literally tasted a touch of salt, caramel, and layers of thinly sliced apples in my slice of Salted Caramel Apple Pie.
Cons:
-I love crusts, especially soft, flaky, and golden buttery ones. The crust on this slice was deceiving: it was golden brown, flaky, but hard to stab with the stainless steel fork, and tasted bland.
-On the pricey side–$5.75/slice. I'm guessing that you are paying a premium for the fresh, organic ingredients.
Not sure if I'll make the trek all the way out here again, but if I'm in the vicinity, I'll be sure to drop by to try a different flavor next time.
This place makes me happy every time I go there. The pie is incredibly delicious. It's actually dangerous that it's located close to my home because of how good it is. The creativity behind the pies is what makes me particularly excited about going by Blackbirds, because in addition to their classics like black bottom oat, they usually have at least one funky pie to spice up your life! (i.e. matcha custard) My favorite of all time was something with pears, apple, and rose, served inside their gorgeous, buttery, exquisitely flaky crust. Today I had the lemon chess, and it was cheerful, sunny heaven on my fork, perfectly tart and rich at the same time. Also, the option of whipped cream alongside your slice of pie is an EXCELLENT one. Go for it and never look back.
I'm not a coffee drinker myself, but the Dona chai they have their is deliciously spicy. Their other baked goods I have found to be pretty good, but time and time again it's the pies that keep me coming back.
The space is pleasant and inviting with wooden tables. If you go on a weekday there are often many people with laptops sitting and doing work. There are definitely specific no-WiFi hours (I am pretty sure weekends are off limits but will check again next time I go), so be conscious of that if you are planning a pie-and-WiFi excursion.
Get the salted caramel apple pie…flakey, not gummy and you can taste all the flavors. I wish I had tried more pies, but I'll be back!
The perfect pie in the perfect location… Everything about this place oozes charm and character, but let's not distract ourselves of why we are here.
The pies, all of them are world class and to die for, let others explain why and how, the only thing I can tell you, is that it's worth the trip!
I got the Matcha custard pie, and the Matcha Chai.
You never know what pies will be available to buy that day, and for me that's part of the excitement.
FATBB has been on my list for awhile so I figured I would make a visit while I was in the neighborhood for a gathering at a local bar. I normally like fruit pies but when I went the only one available was the salted caramel apple. I was also able to pick up a slice of the matcha, the birch beer float and the lavendar honey. There were quite a few honey pies available such as the salted honey, lavendar honey and the honey rosemary shoofly all looked sticky sweet and had a nice brown hue. I also noticed they had a good selection of scones and cookies and other pastries available as well. There seems to be a good amount of seating in the dining room with long heavy wooden tables such as would be in a hall and two or three small tables in the corner nooks. The custardy pies like the matcha and birch beer float (like root beer float) remind me of the chinese egg custard tarts I normally eat. They were really good especially the birch beer. Custard was soft but not too dense and just the right amount of sweetness but no caramelization on top. I also really enjoy a good pie crust it was not too flaky but it kinda had a crunch biting into it. The slices they give you are also a good portion whether dining in and out. Each slice was about $5.75 and a little extra for whipped cream if you eat in. I definitely would stop in again for a coffee or tea and for a slice of some good homemade pie and hopefully they will have more fruit ones next time.
I've died and gone to pie heaven. Now granted I had only one variety, the salted honey, but that one slice had a huge impact. Firstly, I'm not really into pie – except the pumpkin holiday varieties. So for me to rave about pie is a really big deal. Second, I almost bailed on this establishment because there were no available seats (a good sign though) and I was being a normal impatient New Yorker. However, I was able to snag a corner of the communal table – and then experienced the joy of pie. The crust was perfection – flaky and crisp – with delicious, sweet innards topped with salt crystals. The whipped cream served up on the side was fresh too. For those who like sweet and salty – the salted honey is for you. I hear that the salted caramel apple is a big deal there. And if you're wondering why I selected 4 stars instead of 5 – it's because I can't vouch for more than one variety, which means I need to make several return trips to make a better assessment.
