Prices here are totally absurd. It's a great space, but very little seating, a super limited food selection, and overpriced everything.
Prices are ridiculous. 4.75 for a green tea latte and ~3-4 for drip coffee, more for espresso drinks. Pastries and baked goods are equally spendy. But everything is good, so it's worth it (ish) Not my favorite coffee shop but heads and shoulders above the rest of the places in the immediate UN environs.
Not a lot of seating and people will park. So gotta grab and go or prepare to stand awkwardly with your $5 coffee, which may happen anyway as you wait for your espresso drink.
Vibe is diploslutty which is the very best kind of slutty. 😉
credit card minimum (yep, still illegal) — amount varies by whim of cashier — and they always complain when you use a card.
Green tea latte:
It ain't one of those overly sweet, milky green tea lattes *cough* Starbucks *cough. Not that I hate on those- sometimes I drink my dessert that way.
The latte here is unsweetened and reminiscent of a true Japanese matcha latte. I really enjoyed the bold green tea flavor, but if you're not used to this type, it could be unsettling and less satisfying.
Nitro cold brew:
For those that don't know what a nitro is, I just recently discovered myself that it's cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas.
This creates a more silky cold brew- I think of it as Guinness meets coffee. It's delivered on tap! Cool to see it flow out into your cup.
Anyway, not the best nitro I've had. It's definitely silkier than a regular cold brew, but less developed in flavor than I'd like. I almost want to say it tastes slightly watered down…
Food:
They have doughnut plant (not my personal fav, but always good to know where to get a donut 'round here).
Ambiance/decor:
The dim lighting is off-putting because it's more reminiscent of a wine bar… But with no wine in sight. It's more industrial? Truly hard to describe, but overall really clean and spacious for this area.
As I usually write my reviews on my phone in the actual place, I guess I'll step into the light… Back to work.
I dropped by on my way back to work from lunch today, and decided to give the cold brew a try since the weather was beautiful, and I was in the mood for something refreshing. Much better than the cup of drip that I had earlier this year, it hit the spot!
Pennylane by far is the best place for coffee in an area otherwise bogged down by Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, and I'm glad that they're here!
Accidentally walked pass the entrance of Pennylane multiple times before finally locating it correctly, I'm so happy I tried this out as Pennylane also serves Stumptown coffee, one of my favorite bean carriers. Ordered cappuccino, it was foamy, balanced, and had a slight touch of bitterness – well executed.
Pastries were freshly prepared daily and wrapped in paper bags carefully as well.
Their hot chocolate can be made with almond milk. It comes in a tall cup, so it makes me feel like I get plenty of indulgence for the price. The temperature of the milk is perfectly drinkable without being too hot. But I still haven't found out the way to lock the lid over the cup. It was awkward to walk around have milk poured all over. 😛 Oh, they sell croissants from Bien Cuit! Chances are that they will see me again. Hot chocolate goes so well with a croissant.
Hot chocolate – Tanzania (almond milk)
Size: large

This evening my friend & I were going to another exhibit at the Japan Society and we again wanted to meet for coffee beforehand, but it was very warm today and therefore we wanted to ascertain whether or not Pennylane Coffee had a/c. We each called *several times* – over a period of more than an hour – and no one *ever* answered. Fine; we took our business elsewhere….
Croissant breakfast sammie + iced latte is def the bidness 🙂
Operated by friendly baristas with ample open space to study or catch up – big fan! Just wish their hours were better catered for the weekend crowd.
