I wasn't too impressed when I initially came here. I had ordered the House Special Noodle Soup since I wanted to try the hand pulled noodles and I thought the broth was really bland. However, I decided to give Shan Shan a second try but to try other items. Second time around, I tried the Scallion Pancake, Soup Dumplings, Fried Pork Bun, House Special Fried Rice and Taro Milk Tea.
The Scallion Pancake was good but on the thinner side. The soup dumplings were okay, the reason why I say this is because it was not easy to pick them up without breaking them. This could have been executed better if the soup dumplings weren't on a piece of paper and on lettuce instead. It probably would have helped if the soup dumplings weren't touching each other too. The Fried Pork Bun and House Special Fried Rice was pretty solid, can't go wrong with those choices. The Taro Milk Tea was not good at all.. it just didn't taste right and it was really purple too. They also didn't seal the plastic sheet cover onto the cup right so it leaked on me when I initially drank it.
Shan Shan is a good place if you want to grab a quick and cheap bite. The prices are very reasonable for what you get and the service is quick. The staff is very nice as well.
Place was outstanding! Found this spot on Yelp because it's by my job and I must say the noodles are super fresh and even though the restaurant is not that big the quality of the food is amazing. I went with the shredded pork spicy noodles, I also added wontons to my soup which was yummy. When I was done I decided to get food to go, I ordered the seafood fried rice which was better than your typical because it had shrimp, baby muscles, tofu…so good…another dish I had was pork stir fry noodles which had huge peices of pork..yummo…but really they do specialize in noodle soups so A must try if you are in the mood for it!
Shan Shan, where have you been all my life in Parsippany? Why did I not know about you before now? I have been long asserting that I know of no decent Chinese restaurants here, only typical Chinese food take-out style. I have been unintentionally wrong, and now the sin is corrected.
Noodles. It's in their name. Watch them make the noodles. Try them fat, thin, or medium. Try them round or flat. Try them hand-pulled or knife-cut. Whatever you like, there's a noodle for that. They even have triangles! I need to look into that next time.
Flavor is going to vary by dish. Some are subtle, some are bold, but they taste well-balanced and more authentic than the sticky, salty soy mess of the other places. Our waitress cautioned us about the soup, explaining that it has a very subtle flavor due to the use of authentic Chinese herbs. That only makes me want to try it more.
Today we had: Chinese hamburger – Chinese bread with pulled pork in a sauce I couldn't identify. It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, but managed to be the weakest of all the dishes for me. Not quite enough meat. Main courses: outstanding, 5 stars. I had very fat round noodles with my spicy pork, and every mouthful was a joy. My mom had the standard fried noodles with beef, also delicious; they were still rather oily, similar to other places, but here the oil is fresh instead of sticky so it's not nearly as unappetizing. Soup dumplings (steamed pork buns) were very nice, and the wrapper was made fresh in back. All of them split while being cooked, so there wasn't very much soup inside, but the ginger garlic sauce really brought this dish together. I then went for dessert, the Chinese sticky rice pudding. I expected a small bowl, but we got a huge plate. There are red beans on the outside and red bean paste inside. It was wonderful. I love my sticky rice and they deliver in quantity and quality.
I'm hooked. Now I'm allowed to crave Chinese food again because I finally know where to get it. I'll be herding my coworkers over here for lunches. Truly a gem, and you'd never think to look for it – it's right inside the crook of Edwards Road and Route 46 east. Don't take Exit 47A from I-80 unless you have a sense of adventure in cutting across two lanes.
Probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area now. For the suburbs, it's pretty legit. Love the hand made noodle varieties. Soup dumplings and scallion pancakes are also available. It gets busy on weekends, so take out might not be a bad options. It seems they are still working out kinks in their seating arrangements with their customers.
Looking for a combination platter? Some sweet general tsos, and an egg roll perhaps? Look elsewhere!
This is real Chinese food my fat American friend!!! North Western Chinese cuisine from the Xianjiang region. Where a warm and welcoming staff is eager to share their delicious food and make you feel welcome.
The owner noticed I wolfed down my "Cold Noodle w Spicy Chicken". A recommendation from my waiter.. He told me "it is not cold, and there is no picture of it so no one orders it.. But I eat it every day that I work… It's that good." And it was! It is a thick broad noodle like pappardelle. I was expecting soup, but this was more like pasta in sauce.. Spicy with a unique herb that makes your tongue a little numb.
#14 black bean sauce hand pulled noodle.. Raw Cabbage, bean sprouts and carrots lend a lightness and crunch to this hearty dish. Think of Chinese bolognese.. The black bean sauce is laden with ground pork and has a fermented tang that brings it all together.
#16 hand pulled noodles with spicy minced pork. The broth is stewed for 18 hours, no MSG, just 13 Chinese herbs. It was spicy and complex with potatoes and cooked carrots.
#18. It was without the broth, instead a light sauce delicate and delicious, with peppers and thick hand pulled noodles.
It is like I just discovered a new cuisine. While its roots may be firmly in China.. It has branches in Mongolia, and Central Asia giving it an otherworldly allure. No joke.. It's an adventure for the palate.
Actually love this place. My family comes here when we're too lazy to go to NYC for some quality Chinese food, and the food is always great! The bubble tea is okay, but my younger sister likes to get it. Not sure if it's actual tea or the powdered drink….
Anyways, writing this review is making me crave some hand-pulled noodles!
Shanshan was open two years ago. And we like this noodle place since the first day. From the dinning place, you can see through the big glass and watch how the chief turn the dough into noodles.
Most the noodle items on menu are in broth, lamb or beef, rarely pork. The noodle is tender and delicious. However, the broth need more flavor. We also like the pork burger. The themes are western Chinese cuisine, salty, meaty and sometimes spicy.
By the way, all staffs are kind. The lady owner will always approach you and greet you after you meal.
Holy Cow!!!!!!! I was impressed! I never knew that there was such a thing as a "chinese burger". Well, there is and it was delicious!! I would have never ordered it had it not been for the owner who came to our table to help us with the menu and make suggestions. She is awesome, has a great personality and wants to make each customer happy!! What a nice woman!
The hand pulled noodles are amazing and you can watch them being made though a glass window in the back corner of the restaurant.
We will definitely be returning to this restaurant very soon!!!!
