During my recent visit to Brooklyn, I sought out things that I just can't get in Tampa. One of those things, vegan donuts. So the first stop we made was Dun-Well Doughnuts. Dun-Well doesn't play the whole regular donuts with one vegan option game. Everything at Dun-Well is vegan. This includes the lattes, ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes, donuts, horchata and egg type things. I really wanted to try everything that Dun-Well had to offer. I wanted to come back six days in a row, sampling a different thing each time. The doughnut sundae caught my eye. So did the milkshakes and the lime doughnut. But having just a four hour window forced me to make a decision. I only had one go at this, I had to make it right. So I went with the doughnut most recommended on Yelp, the Peanut Butter and Jelly doughnut. J-Fur ordered a straight chocolate donut. Because there was a ten dollar minimum for credit card usage, J-Fur also ordered a tea and I tacked on a lavender lemonade. Our bill…ten dollars exactly. One thing about Dun-Well's brand of doughnuts, they are certainly not cheap.
I bit into the PB&J and did a bit of a mind gasp. I'm not a doughnut fan in the least, but this one, it was delicious. The peanutty glaze was not sugary, like I feared, it still had a strong peanut taste. The doughnut was fluffy, sort of like a dough pillow for the rich peanut topping to rest it's weary head. The jelly inside the doughnut was a nice sweet contrast to the rich peanut glaze and doughy doughnut. I offered a bite to J-Fur who remarked "It's way too sweet" after she tasted it. J-Fur and I both agreed about the chocolate doughnut, it was too salty. Had it been a chocolate and sea salt doughnut, it would've been right on the money. But because she only wanted a chocolate doughnut, it completely missed the mark. I'm not sure if Dun-Well offers a salted chocolate version but, if they do, perhaps it was bartender error that led to the less than stellar doughnut.
The Dun-Well Doughnut lavender lemonade was just how I like it. The lemonade wasn't super sweet and the lavender offered a slight little flavor boost to the drink. It was very refreshing on a sweltering day.
Location: In Bushwick.
The place: It kind of has a cottage feel to it, with lots of dark wood adorning the place. I liked it. There are just a few tables so it's more of a take-out place. Also, no bathrooms so if you're stopping in to make that pit stop – it ain't gonna happen. Trust me, I know.
The goods: I actually didn't go for donuts so can't comment on those. I got a Cortado and it was OK. It was a little weak though. Probably not my first pick for coffee but it was decent. My friend says the donuts are good.
Service: OK. I can't say the staff was super friendly.
Price point: I think the coffee was about $3 which is on par with other places.
I think these were probably the best donuts I had in NY.
Not the best I ever had, but I enjoyed the donuts I had there.
I took a cinnamon sugar and a pistachio, and my boyfriend had a chocolate and a pbj.
The cinnamon one was great, just as tasty as I like it, but definitely not disgusting, and it was very soft. The pistachio was great, I was a bit afraid by this one, I really expected it to be disgusting at some point but it wasn't at all. The pistachio was just perfect, not too sweet or anything.
The pbj was great, my boyfriend loved it, he was a bit disappointed by the chocolate tho but he ate it the day after so..
The service was really nice too. I'll go back next time I'm in NY!
Delicious doughnuts! Not only were there a ton of flavors to choose from, but the doughnuts were NOT greasy, NOT overly sweet and NOT dry, In fact, the flavoring was good (meaning you could tell which flavor each doughnut was), the inside of the doughnut is super flaky and the outside has a bit of a crunch — the opposite of other doughnuts that tend to get soggy. The decor of the cafe is adorable; dark wood, cute art and great chalk designs! The employee at the register was delightful and friendly- always a plus. The only reason I gave the cafe a 4 star is because the coffee (plain hot coffee) was sub par. I judge cafe locations by their coffee quality and this coffee just did not cut it ; it tasted a bit watery and lacked that coffee bang.
Overall, great variety and flavors and awesome texture. A must-try!
Dun-Well Doughnuts is a high class operation producing high class doughnuts. It's certainly not out of place in the neighborhood. I got these for my wife's birthday and they were a hit at her office. My biggest qualm is with the prices. It costs $25 for a dozen and up to about $2.50 for just one. The doughnuts are as good, if not better, than any equivalent made with dairy. Yes, they are all completely vegan and completely delicious. The most vegan thing about Dun-Well is the environment. Put these in a fancy bakeshop in NJ and no one will think trice as to what they were made of! And with flavors like peach pie, chocolate peanut and lemon poppy you are bound to find something to satisfy your sweet, dairy free tooth. Just be sure to bring cash, lots of it if you have many mouths to please.
On a walk into Brooklyn's interior I decided to stop into Dun-Well to get some relieve from the scorching afternoon sun.
Looking over the menu, I asked the staff a question about their horchata latte. The woman working the counter seemed less than enthused to answer my simple question so I just said, "I'll take it." And left it at that.
Finding a counter seat at their front window I grabbed one of their local newspapers to read and waited on my latte. Slightly sweet with a well-balanced taste between your traditional horchata flavor and the coffee. Over ice, it was a perfect drink for the hot afternoon.
Great atmosphere and I wasn't rushed to leave.
Inside, the shop is very inviting with plenty of cafe seating to relax, have a cup of coffee, a bowl of ice cream, and, of course, their doughnuts. Some people tend to think that vegan desserts might lack what other egg and dairy desserts have. Here, they would be wrong.
I needed to try their Cinnamon Sugar doughnut. This was a cinnamony and sugary delight. The doughnut was light and pillowy in texture with a sweet glaze that melts in your mouth. Coating the glaze is the cinnamon and sugar, and the rich cinnamon flavor really pops.
Location: the only way for people who don't have a car to get there is by taking the L train. I got off at Mentrose ave and felt a completely different vibe from Brooklyn. I felt their sun is much warmer compared to Manhattan's. Their neighborhoods are more interracial than Manhattan's. And of course, it's more relaxing here than in Manhattan.
Dun-well is right by the subway station entrance/exit.
The store is very … creepy. My stereotype of a vegan place is built by someone who is female, late 20s and will pay attention to making their store look cute.
But this is not the case here in Dun-well.
No decoration
all things are wood-based.
A little bit disorganized.
So I questioned myself: are their donuts gonna be good?
Food: yeah, my worrisome seems to be redundant. It's good.
It is of course the best vegan donut but it could be top 3 if we are only competing based on the way they make their yeast.
I love the chewiness of their dough.
First bite will be followed by second bite and when you got to the last bite, you will regret how fast you finish this donut and turn to buy another one.
YEAH, THEY ARE GOOD.
Their flavors are also on point.
I wish they could be closer to me …
BTW, Donuts are less expensive compared to the doughnut project but absolutely better.
