I say it's a bit overrated.
The most popular item which is the cucumber salad is actually dope. I could probably eat it everyday.
I got the MERA MERA cold soba with hot broth. It was alright. The soup base was a bit too salty. It didn't feel like anything special. I also wish I ordered something with a more clear base soup. My mom got the special tom yum soba soup. That was certainly better. Flavor was great.
The menu is too cluttered. I literally could not understand it that well. I like when restaurants keep it simple.
They give you hot clear broth to make your broth less salty… It was a nice touch. I really appreciated that! It was a bit cramped and I felt rushed out.
This is a gem! I really like how they combine cold soba with hot spicy soup, extremely warming in winter.
Do order the mera mera soup if you like minced meat and spicy soup. It is also very savoury. I have to return again for this particular dish this summer, albeit it is really warm outside and I still wanted this warm food.
They do have cold dishes and all. The other standout appetiser for me is the homemade tofu! I personally like the soft and tender tofu, but the sauce is a little too salty for my liking.
Overall, I will still return for a good hot soup when I am back in town, and especially so during winter.
The food was okay – nothing too special. My friend and I got the sesame cold soba and dragon something soba (with eel). Maybe it was a little too hot that day and this restaurant does not have AC – I just really wanted to get out of that place shortly after eating.
After we were done with our noodles, the server brought out this hot broth for us to mix it into our noodle sauce and drink it like its soup. Both my friend and I couldn't do it lol, it's just way too hot inside the restaurant. I would try it out again when it's cooler out!
I've been to both locations a few times, but this time around, service was so off, and my soba was just okay, made me wonder if I will take more friends to come back again.
They were training new staff, we were immediately seated, but before I even looked at the menu, we were asked whether we wanted to order, 3 times. My friends studied the menu and asked for recommendations, the staff was not very helpful, all they cared was what we wanted to eat.
Their house-made tofu though is the best around town, great texture, very rich soy bean taste. But their soba is just mediocre, I remember the texture used to be just right, not too chewy not too soggy, my Kashiwa (chicken thigh and shiitake mushroom) hot soba was not bad, but there's only one piece of mushroom in it, presentation was off, I have a picture that I don't want to bother to post.
My friends ordered the curry dip, kimchi dip and regular dip, it seemed like they enjoyed the food, I tasted the kimchi, it's pretty good, but I couldn't focus on my food when four servers kept walking behind my back and around our table, ALL the time.
You could call that attentive, but way over, I didn't order extra surveillance.
I originally went to the Cocoron at 61 Delancey St and I didn't know that it's closed on Mondays. Luckily, there was a sign inside the restaurant to come here instead. Good thing that this place and the Cocoron on Delancey St were not super far from each other.
To be honest, I really like to eat soba noodles more than eating ramen. I just love the chewy texture of the soba noodles. Plus, soba places aren't as hyped up like ramen places and it's kinda hard to find delicious soba places in NYC. Well, today was my 1st visit to Cocoron and it was really busy this afternoon. The place is also small so coming here in pairs or groups of 4 people are probably best. But, the crowd died down by the time I left. So, I got the "Cold Sansai Soba" in large size since I was really hungry. It was very good and there's a bunch of wild veggies in the dish too (i.e. bamboo shoot, flowering fern, and wood ear mushroom). The soba noodle texture was cold and chewy – I LIKE IT. 🙂
I'll come back one day to try other dishes…possibly getting the dip soba type next time. BTW, don't forget to bring CASH here too since it's a cash only place.
This place is extremely small in size so plan ahead! Came as a party of 2 and managed to get a seat at the "bar" late on a Friday night (right before their closing time). We chose the Cold Kimchi Soba & the Stamina Soba.
I first tried soba here (I visited this place about a few months ago) and since then, I've tried soba from two other places and NOW I can confidently say that Cocoron definitely has the most bomb soba dishes. Despite the size of dishes/ plates that are placed in front of you, don't underestimate it! It's actually pretty filling. You can also order additional ingredients (if you do need more food to fill you up).
– The menu is pretty extensive. I would've spent more time trying to figure out what to eat if it wasn't so close to closing time- but definitely for next time.. I'll go to try something completely different & new!
– Speaking of the menu, enjoy the cute little cartoons that are displayed in the menu
– It's one of the healthier choices that you can pick as your meal- even as you get full, it feels very light in your stomach
– The flavors of both dishes that I tried were prominent but not overwhelming
TLDR; Can't wait to come back and try the new dishes. Thank you for a wonderful first soba experience!
My second time back at this place and still very much in love with it! The only thing that changed this time around was their menu! I was shocked when I saw that their new additional menu caters towards vegans – how great is that??
There are tons of choices of soba to pick from. I highly suggest one of the dipping soba – has such a Japanese feel to it! I ordered the Pork Kimchi Soup Dipping Soda and boy it was AMAZING! I was scared that it was going to be too spicy but not at all – it was definitely more hot than spicy and there was actually a hint of sweetness to it as well! The broth is served separately in a pot above a fire so it keeps the broth warm and cold soba on the side. The way I ate it – I scooped the broth up and then soak some soba in it – DELICIOUS! Towards the end of your meal, they give you a big pot of hot water to pour in the remaining broth so you can drink it as soup – how thoughtful!
Overall, 10/10 will definitely come back to try other flavors!
My favorite soba place, hands down.
Since I got back from traveling in Japan in April, I have been weary of revisiting Japanese restaurants I had eaten at in case the food no longer lived up to my expectations and ended up tarnishing my memories of the restaurants. This place however is still as good as I remembered! I usually come here on a cold day and order a large stamina, kimchi or mera mera dip soba. Would highly recommend all three which are savory and delicious. The soba is served on a bamboo basket / plate (which I learned is the traditional/typical way of serving it) and is paired with a stone pot that has a little fire under it to keep it warm. But given it was really warm today, I ordered the cold chirashi soba (the menu said they only make 10 per day) and it was delicious! It came with salmon flakes, salmon roe and lots of nori. There is another option on the menu for the same dish with just salmon roe which looked just as good. The soba for the cold dishes come in a huge bowl with the toppings and are paired with a little bottle of soya sauce broth on the side. Noodles always meet my expectations (so chewy and delish) and the soba broth they give you at the end that you mix with the dipping sauce makes the meal so satisfying.
Definitely check this place out!
