Union Square Greenmarket

“But I love walking around and sampling jams and cheeses and honey, ogling the little pots of marigolds, and sharing a pastry and apple cider.”

“I recommend Red Jacket Orchards' Italian plums ($2/lb), Concord grapes($4/lb), and Jonamac apples ($1.65/lb) when each is respectively available.”

“And some superb people watching.”

  1. Oh the greenmarket how I wish you were on the other side of the river. I would love to come here to buy things weekly but it's quite a hike from NJ. Discovered this place while venturing into Union Square for the holiday shops. This place is loaded with cool vendors selling anywhere from fresh baked breads to organic meats to dried flowers to fresh veggies. Most of the vendors gave out free samples so make sure you stop by and ask for one!

  2. Dear Union Square Market, I really want to love you. You look like a great market. I come from a city with a great farmers market (Detroit… Really. Eastern Market is a great market), so I know of what I speak. And I appreciate your commitment to organic produce. But when I pay double for produce that so full of bugs that I can't possibly eat it…. Yuk. That's not a value to me… Or you, when I am forced to stop buying your goods. Sigh.

  3. You had me at farmers market. Wait? A farmers market in the middle of the city?! YES!!

We accidentally ran into this farmers market when we were last visiting the city and wow, I was truly surprised at what the offered. Fruits, vegetables, hot cider, honey, booze, anything and everything. It was soo cool. If we hadn't had a time to catch I bet we would have stayed longer. But our bags with our bagels were tempting us and our 2 o'clock appointment for the museum stressed us. But hey, at least we were able to feed my daughter some very delicious zucchini bread. Yum!

I have no clue when it is there or how long but I'm thinking there is a schedule somewhere to find out. If in New York, find it and enjoy.

  4. The Union Square Greenmarket is one of the City's biggest and most well known farmer's markets, though by no means the only one. Vendors offer numerous goods such as wine, fish, eggs, flowers, bread and many fruits and vegetables. Their products are fun and fresh but they are more expensive than Whole Foods across the street and the quality is sometimes dubious for the price.

I love the sense of community at this Greenmarket. People bring their dogs and vendors are eager to offer samples. I also love that they open around 8am so I often pass by whilst walking to work. I'm not in the market for samples of wine before work (this was a post-30 development).

I shop here occasionally to support local businesses and farmers. I love their zucchini, sunflowers and raspberries. Butttt they ain't cheap. So just know before you go.

  5. Bought some pretty flowers from here yesterday! Great selection of veggies, fruit, flowers, meat, cheese, bread, etc. Everyone is friendly and there is a wide enough space between the stands that it's easy to get around and see what each one is offering. Super convenient location at Union Square, with lots of trains nearby.

  6. Best urban outdoor farmer's market I've ever been to. So many great things to look at, sample; you won't know where to begin.

Lots of beautiful flowers, local purveyors of all sorts. Incredible selection of fresh fruit and veg. Had the best chocolate cake of my life from Bread Alone(and it was vegan; I'm not!). Fresh spring mix w/edible flowers!

There is something for everyone here. If I lived in NYC, I'm sure I'd frequent this amazing greenmarket.

  7. A Saturday morning jaunt to this market can instantly add a little bit of perfection to any autumn (or summer- or any season for that matter) weekend.  Just taking in the sights and sounds would be pleasure enough- but come hungry for delights like pillowy soft apple cider donuts, homemade pretzels and artisanal potato chips.  And if you're handy in the kitchen you'll find a veritable treasure trove of inspiration.  Or if you're like me and your oven serves mainly for cereal box storage then you'll marvel all the more at the colors and varieties of goodies that your fellow New Yorkers are going to take home and actually whip into something miraculous.  It's a great spot to bring your pup, but keep an eye out to make sure they aren't inadvertently run over by a stray shopping cart – it can get right on weekend mornings! Also, the perfect spot  to acquire all your fall decor when "pumpkin season" rolls around.  Hay bales and corn stalks and decorative gourds galore!

  8. I would guess this is the largest greenmarket in NYC.

Special things to look out for:
    – Compost collection (bring your organics!)
    – Textile recycling (bring your old jeans!)
    – Hydroponics (local tomatoes in the winter!)
    – Meat from other kinds of animals (goat, elk, bison!)
    – Maple sweets (hard candy… and marshmellows!!)
    – Hawthorne Valley (lots of hard cheeses, and homemade kvass!)
