If you love Spanish food, this is the best bang for your buck right here. Massive portions, reasonable prices, and a friendly staff to go along with it. The pork and ox tail are both in. sane.
This place needs to change its damn name; so deceiving! Seems like it's a dinner but they mainly serve Latin food. It may be that they took over a diner and simply kept the name? In any case, this is legit a pretty good Latin place for the area. Mainly Mexican and carribean foods. Their rice is cooked perfectly. Their fish is incredible and the pernil was good. Simple food. Large portions. Inexpensive. A must try hole in the wall.
I came in for some chicken soup since I wasn't feeling well. Nice people here then again I wasn't the one placing the order. My coworker, who frequents this place, put in our orders. You get free bread with the soup so I asked for another ration of bread. I like that. The soup was really good. A few noodles, I think there were dumplings, some potatoes and carrots. Very flavorful and a really great portion for $4. Seating inside is limited. A few tables, one counter top. I think their soup is definitely going to be a staple for the next few weeks.
In the running for the greasiest burrito in New York. And for the record, that's not a compliment. Grease is good in theory. But too much kills a dish. And the food at Westside has waaaay too much.
Plus the chicken burrito quickly devolved into a place of Mexican mush. The "hot sauce" they gave me was jerk style, and was pretty awful. Plus all the chicken in the burrito had bones in it, and a fair amount of gristle and fat. Ew.
The only reason they get two stars is the neighborhood is pretty void of cheap dinner options. If based on food alone, this is a one star place and to be avoided whenever possible.
Yuck.
For anyone with an appreciation for Dominican breakfast food, they have mungu on the menu and serve Cafe Bustelo coffee. My Dominican grandmother will only drink Cafe Bustelo coffee so I felt at home as I sat at the bar and the ladies behind the counter served me mounds of delicious food. This is a divey spot full of regulars who are greeted in the native Spanish tongue of the workers. Designed like a diner, your food is cooked in front of you as telenovelas play in the background.
Skip your regular over priced brunch spot and give this place a try. You won't regret it!

I hardy get Dominican-Caribbean food but I do like to eat when I am craving for something heavy. It's too sad to see less and less of those restaurants and Spanish family sitting on their stoops and just hang around, especially in Summer. I always thought that's very New York.
Monday special, Beef Oxtail Stew ($11), got my attention. I chose tasty=salty black beans and a flavorful rice with it. The rice had a vivid yellow color.
It has been my downfall asking to a waiter what to have but turned out, it was a good thing this tinge.
Nice lady behind the counter responded well with my request, Roast Pork on the side. She didn't charge for it and gave me a wink.
If I am walking on Canal St. heading to Chinatown, I will definitely drop by and try other things like Café con leche or if I want quick but filling breakfast, instead of Dim Sum, I get Mangu or if I am super hungry, I sit down with my friend and share Huevos Rancheros because I know the portion is going to be huge.
Unfortunately this type of a true NY delight is fading every day.
Great authentic spanish food in the area. I would come here frequently for lunch. HUGE portions, the staff and owner is friendly. You feel a bit like you are transported to Latin America, everyone is always speaking spanish here. I mostly ordered the yellow rice, black beans, and baked chicken (lots of flavor with meat that falls off the bone). The oxtail and pork was also delicious. I'm sure everthing else is good here also.
