Baron Nahmias Distillery, which also does business as Nahmias et Fils, operates out of an unpromising looking industrial space in Yonkers, but for those interested in an artisanal, small-batch operation it's worth visiting. Nahmias advertises as having been around since 1900, but that includes earlier generations back in Morocco who produced their fig-based Mahia. This operation dates back only a few years, and in addition to Mahia offers aged and un-aged rye (we preferred the aged!). The setup is small and informal, but the staff was friendly, including the rep from Native Edge Spirits which recently had a first batch of their own chili pepper infused liquor produced onsite. Don't come here looking for a fancy tasting room or Hudson River views, but do stop by to talk with folks genuinely interested in distilling and to sample some finely done beverages.
