We stumbled upon this place after finishing dinner in the area and doing a quick Yelp search for dessert places nearby. The desserts here are a lot smaller than your typical dessert spots, but the flavors are still there. We ordered the nutella cupcake and the strawberry panna cotta. Both several bites, it was enough to satisfy your sweet tooth without an overbearing amount of sugar. The small desserts are cute to look at as well.
Dropped in here after dinner because I was craving something sweet, and I was so so happy I did. I bought a blueberry cheesecake cupcake and it was exactly what I needed. The frosting melted in my mouth and the cupcake was so soft and buttery. My boyfriend doesn't like sweets at all but he said the cupcake was pretty good.
No clue how I've been walking past them for the past few years and never took notice! Mind you, I do need to make my way through more of their offerings…but, for the first visit, I was impressed!
My friend reached for the handle of the door, and my other friend pointed out they were already closed. But the guy inside waved us – and customers after us – right on in! My friends loved their lattes…the foam art was solid…the bittersweet salted ganache was TO DIE FOR….and everything else looked SOOOOOO yummy!
Will be back!
Was in the area tonight & decided to give this place a try! I'm glad my expectations were met because it is not often that I find really good dessert spots. My friends and I came here for the mousse and I was surprised at the availability of various flavors. I tried the chocolate and tiramisu mousse, but next time I'm definitely going for the mango one. The mousse are in cute glass jars and each layer appears to be different, but the overall taste is authentic and very sweet. In fact the tiramisu mousse was just as good as the really great tiramisu I've had at an Italian restaurant. The staff members here also seem friendly, and although there are not too many seats available, it is a nice cozy place to enjoy some sweets and catch up with friends 🙂
Very cute establishment, nice employees. I asked about the almond flour in the cupcakes and tarts, and it was a pleasant chat with the young girl. Gets a steady flow of business. As I waited for a friend to arrive, I saw several people com in for treats. Makes me feel confident that everything is fresh. Clean shop, small, but has seating along the window, and two cozy chairs/table all the way in the back.
My husband loved their mini lemon meringue tart — it looked adorable, with the round toasted meringue, which was springy to the touch. I was tempted to eat it myself! Should have bought two!
Cupcakes were actually so-so, and didn't have much of a distinct, or deep depth of flavor.
But being so cute and small, it's hard to resist!
Vanilla- vanilla — the best one yet. Without any other flavors added to the mix, it tasted like an almond cookie. Loved it.
Chocolate- chocolate — the frosting was sweet, but light. Didn't taste like a heavy buttercream, but a sweet whipped cream. The chocolate in the batter wasn't very strong, but it was clearly chocolate.
S'more — this is just basically the chocolate cupcake, with white cream frosting and a tiny graham cracker square. I think having a layer of ground/crushed graham cracker under the chocolate cake would have amped it up a bit. And maybe had a marshmallow/meringue topping, dusted with more graham cracker. But, that's just my two cents!
Blueberry cheesecake — OK, by far the best one! The batter was sweetened with what tasted like cinnamon/sugar/graham cracker, but also paired perfectly with the simple cream cheese frosting.
I also think the cupcakes, due to the almond flour, aren't as airy and fluffy as some cupcakes. They felt denser, but still crumbly. It was a different texture than I was accustomed to, but still really good and fresh.
Have a large selection of coffees as well, and giant cookies the size of my face! And jarred desserts. Overall, enjoyable while in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get any more.
Mike C is clearly racist. This place is great! It's more like BUFU-"by us, f you"…. Lol Not all Asians are tiny and petite, Mike. This place is great!! I love the green tea latte. The passion fruit tart is TO DIE FOR.
Gravitated towards the name of this establishment.
Sweet Buttons is a cozy little coffee and dessert spot on the corner of Rivington and Orchard Street. They offer cupcakes, cookies, tarts, "dessert jars" and a wide range of coffees and teas.
The cupcakes, which weren't "full sized" but also weren't "mini" (quotation marks because not sure of a cupcake standard), were moist, filled and fresh. The buttercream frosting was super sweet. The huge cookie tasted as if it had just been baked: soft and delicious!
Not sure if it varies based on the time of the day, but there were about eight different kinds of cupcakes to choose from. (We were there on a Sunday). Definitely not overwhelming like other cupcake places that offer too many flavors but I would have liked to see more options.
Lastly, great prices and accommodating staff. If you find yourself in the lower east side, I'd recommend satisfying your sweet tooth with a cupcake from Sweet Buttons.
This review is based solely on their customer service. Was planning on driving there to pick up some cupcakes for my wife on a sunday evening. Looked up on yelp and saw they close at 8 pm. I know yelp might not be the most accurate in terms of business hours so i decided to give them a call to confirm their hours but nobody picks up their phone. Afterwards i realized they had a website so i checked their hours of operation and it was same as what was on yelp so i decided to drive there and pick some up to surprise my wife. When i arrived at 7:10 pm, the gates were down and the gates on the door was half down but i see workers still inside and cupcakes and other desserts were still there and not packed away yet. They did not let me in and didn't even bother to open door to tell me they were closed. Then i realized on the door they updated their hours changing it to closing at 7.
Highly disappointed and upset because i traveled all this way and not able to get anything for my wife. Their website is deceiving and not accurate. Not sure if i will be back even if they are good cupcakes.
