Gentrification rolls through neighborhoods like waves, the changes of few blocks to the west reverberating further and further east. So it is with Williamsburg, where the pressures on the waterfront, with ambitious multinationals gobbling up large pieces of the real estate, have effected the roast chicken scene miles inland.
My longtime favorite for pollo asado, Pollos USA, closed and reopened twice in rapid succession, finally remerging as the haplessly upmarket Caridad. Prices doubled, sending me over the border to Ridgewood for an alternative.
Super Pollo doesn't have the advantage of being two blocks from my house, but it is just a short cycle away. The crowd on a recent Sunday was almost entirely Latino. Super Pollo is Mexican, although the asado scene is strong in that country, most of the places offering this type of food in New York are run by people from Andean countries (Colombia, Peru) or Spanish-speaking places in the Caribbean (the Dominican Republic).
Honestly, it's hard to taste the geographic differences in the final product. This isn't the NoMad, where the bird comes stuffed with foie gras. The test here is whether the chicken meat is juicy and flavorful when served, and this passed the test. Beans and rice are the go-to sides here, and while the butteriness of the rice doesn't hold up to the very best days of Pollos, perhaps that means that this is meal is slightly less of a calorie bomb. (Free chips are served before the meal, which is something you'll never see in a Colombian chicken place.)
Until this place starts marinating the chicken with kimchi or placing star anise on the table, this is poultry winner just over the Brooklyn border.
The chicken is so moist and tender, full of flavor. Not to mention the yummy sauces that go well with it. I've tried the yuca, rice and beans, and avocado salad, which were all delicious and fresh. The staff is always smiling and very nice. They offer great deals for chicken combos as well as platters such as the Bandeja Paisa.
Great example of Ecuadorean cusine. Combos can feed 2-4 people depending on how hungry you are. Super Pollo serves some of the tastiest and juciest roasted chicken I've ever had which could serve as a stand alone dish. The fried plaintains and empanadas are some of my favorites, but they still don't compete with my mom's cooking. Quick pick up and delivery service make this a great option for weeknight meals as well. Happy to have found authentic local Latin food in the neighborhood!
Great food. They deliver!!! Love the chicken.
good portion size, fresh, tasty! It's like mami's homecookin'.
Try the empanadas. Done Ecuadorian style.
Enjoy.
Finally got the chance to try Super Pollo. Delicious!
I ordered the quarter chicken meal and roast pork meal.
Each came with a heaping serving of rice and beans and an avocado salad.
The chicken is super good and the roast pork is also super yummy.
I can vouch for all of the other Yelpers and confirm that the sauce is delicious.
This place is a hidden gem! All for under $20!
