  1. I'm pretty sure before I walked into Davey's Ice Cream someone scanned my brain to figure out how to make the perfect ice cream shop for me.  Situated in an old store front in the East Village, Davey's has an old skool charm I had not expected when I was walking there.  The outside looks like it could have once been an old grocery store with moldings and a sign in retro lettering.  The inside has a huge counter area for the ice cream with all sorts of signs telling you what flavors you can order.  There is a small seating area in the front and a large table in the back next to an old fireplace!  The fireplace doesn't work of course, but there is are a couple of decorative logs inside it.  Nice touch.

The staff is incredibly friendly and more than willing to let you try more than one flavor. They'll also happily share the pros and cons of each flavor along with which are their favorites.  Their enthusiasm is infectious and you have to will yourself not to order more scoops than you can actually eat.

But ambiance can only go so far.  If the ice cream is terrible then it can be cute as all get out and it wouldn't matter.  Fortunately the ice cream is AMAZING.   I tried a sample of the green tea ice cream which had the deep, earthy matcha flavor you want.  The flavor I chose however was the roasted pistachio which, I swear to you dear reader, is the best pistachio ice cream I have ever tasted in my life.  Some pistachio ice creams have a hint of the nut flavor, others are just sweet with no pistachio flavor.  This had nothing but pistachio flavor.  No overwhelming sweetness and no odd artificial flavoring.  It was creamy and satisfying and I really give these folks a lot of credit for making such a wonderful concoction.

I'd go back to Davey's any day.  They really deliver and as I write this it's the perfect season for it!

  2. There is no dearth of ice cream slash dessert spots in the East Village, which makes choosing a dessert place rather hard. First-world problems, I know. However, Davey's separates itself by having a very comfortable neighborhood shop vibe, coupled with some unique ice cream flavors and combinations. There's a small space to sit down in the back, which is nice, since the front space is sort of cramped, and there's not really an outdoor space to enjoy your ice cream.

Most recently tried the green tea matcha ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. I know that sounds pretty strange and even possibly disgusting, but it worked out really well. The chocolate sprinkles actually added a bit of richness to the green tea ice cream that wouldn't have been there originally, and it made for a pretty nice dessert. The good thing is that they do also have the classic flavors if you happen to not be feeling adventurous, so the options are definitely there.

Staff is super friendly and very accommodating with samples and their scoops. The price is about standard for ice cream in the area, with a "single-scoop" costing you about $5.

Don't think I'd come out of my way to return, but definitely a solid option for ice cream in the area. I'd say Sundaes and Cones might have a few more varieties, and a little more carousing space, but I'd say Davey's is on par.

  3. I had Mexican Vanilla and Chocolate Chocolate with Fudge Sauce and really enjoyed my dessert.  The ice cream was fresh and flavorful with good, clear flavor for each item.  I'd definitely recommend experiencing this amazing place.

  4. Cute ice cream shop.

Employees are so sweet and told us we could sample different flavors. They even gave us a warm goodbye on our way out. Their ice cream is smooth, flavorful, creamy, and not overly sweet. I loved the Speculoos Chocolate Chip, while hubs really enjoyed the Cookies & Cream and Choc Puddin' Pie. They also offer some candy, cookies, brownies, ice cream sandwiches, shakes, tea, etc. Some seating is available towards the front of the shop and more seating towards the back. There is no restroom here.

Glad we tried out Davey's Ice Cream!

  5. Simple, charming little ice cream shop. They have a great selection of flavors and different cone options (have cups as well). There are also other dessert options like ice cream cookies and sundaes.

I got the speculoos choco chip ice cream  in a regular cone (kiddie size = 1 scoop, 1 flavor). I felt that the quality of the ice cream was good but the flavor of the ice cream did not really come out that much. I expected much more flavor given the great reviews that the location has received. I enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and the seating area available in the back of the store (they also had a pitcher of lemon water– how thoughtful!)

I was not blown away by the ice cream but may go back to try again as it may have just been an off batch that I tried.  I also am enticed by the huge waffle cones they offer — something that seems to be the specialty of the ice-cream shop.

  6. This ice cream place is soooo good! I love their unique, fresh and delicious flavors! I got the split cup with speculoos chocolate chip (total bombs!) and strawberry swirl! Both were delicious! You can also ask them to let you try whatever flavors you want before picking an actual flavor and purchasing which I love. The vibe is really cool, a fun place to hang out at. Some other flavors included, strong coffee, matcha green tea, toast and jam, sesame, Mexican vanilla, chocolate chocolate, roasted pistachio, cookies and cream and salted caramel. All their ice cream are hand made at the back of the store and they also make things like cakes and shakes. If you are bored of the traditional ice cream flavors, check this place out!

  7. Bumping up my review to 5 stars because this has become my favorite ice cream spot in Manhattan! I've tried the peppermint, cookie butter, and cookies and cream flavors and all are superb. Though I've never tried them, the ice cream sandwiches look pretty divine.

There's often a line out the door on a hot night, so be prepared to wait a few minutes for your delicious creation!

  8. Some of the best ice cream I've had in NY, hands down. I don't know how I've missed Davey's all these years, but better late than never.

After dinner in the Village with my pal, he suggested grabbing ice cream nearby. He didn't remember the name but I had my fingers crossed that he was thinking Davey's, which I've had my eye on for a while. Lo and behold, we made it there, and I knew exactly what I was getting: speculoos chocolate chip and (strong) coffee on a cone. After a painful 30 seconds of waiting for the worker to give me my ice cream (kidding), we took to the streets to enjoy.

My goodness, I don't know when was the last time I've been blown away by ice cream, but I sure was here. The strong coffee was indeed stronger than most coffee flavors I've had in my life, and while I would press Davey's to go just a bit further in capturing the bitterness, I'm quite satisfied with how it is. I tried asking for the coffee to be the bottom scoop but the worker told me the speculoos was a bit hard at that point and therefore should be on the bottom. Ideally I'd still have the order reversed on a cone but that's hardly a complaint worth bringing up. And unf, I mean you can't go wrong with speculoos in ice cream in general, but this was heavenly.

If I had to nitpick here, I'd say our ice cream started melting immediately when we stepped outside. It was a relatively cool night in the city, mind you, so I was a bit annoyed at the dripping. My cone skills are impeccable but I couldn't save my shoe from the occasional drop, and my fingers were sticky by the time I hurriedly devoured my ice cream. Maybe next time I'll get mine in a cup so I can savor these flavors, but overall Davey's is as good as it gets in the East Village, if not in NYC as a whole.
