I just recently discovered that there is a green market here located centrally in Rockefellar Center. You can't miss it. Like any other farmer's market, it's open air and they sell produce and dairy products from local farms. It's not as huge as the Union Sq farmer's market but it's pretty decent. According to their website, it's open every summer around July – August, so it's not here all year round. Some of the stuff are a bit pricy like a box of blueberries for $5, but I suppose that's the price you pay for organics. I enjoy taking my lunch break and walk over here to check out what they have. It definitely helps you escape a little from the anxieties of Midtown.
I really like farmers markets because I like all of the bright colors of the produce and the fact that everything that I am getting came straight from the earth. I was glad that I found out about this green market in Rockefeller Center. It is located right above the Rock Center Ice Rink near the giant golden statue. When I first came here I was wondering where in the world it could be since its open on Wednesdays-Fridays during the week until the end of August. Having been here for early morning concerts and the crazy lines I was wondering how they could possibly fit a market here. Just look for the tents if you can't find it or ask one of the dozens of security guards that work at Rockefeller Center. The day I was here there was a tent city of 3 blocks of teenage girls camping out and waiting to see One Direction the next day. Crazy stuff.
It is not a very big market but there are still quite a few stalls that have items that could have been imagined right out of a Dr. Seuss book such as rainbow swiss chard, pink green tomatoes and yellow donut peaches (donut part sounds great but its more about the shape). There must have been 15 types of peaches that I never knew existed. I was able to get some good jaw cracking pretzels from the martin's pretzel stand. They sell bags of whole pretzels but a bag of brokens are cheaper and will do you just fine. Of course there were apple cider donuts which I had to get from The Orchards of Concklin stand and was deciding if I should get the dusted (I hate chalky white fingers), cinnamon sugar or original. I ended up with the cinnamon sugar and the coarse sugar added a little crunchy texture to the donuts. At first I thought they were bits of eggshells but its really just the sugar. These come in a pack of 6 so you are pretty much set for breakfast the rest of the week. There was also fresh corn on the cob for about 50 cents an ear and I scored a good sized summer squash for 75 cents or you could also get 3 squashes for 2 bucks! Baked goods abound at this market and I was able to get a goey raspberry jelly donut for a late afternoon treat. They even had brownie muffins that looked very good. Huge rounds of freshly baked bread decorated some of the stalls and I was able to bring back a pretzel baguette to have with my lunch. There were also a lot of wonderful looking pies in different sizes and pints and bottles of fresh pressed juices if you get thirsty while walking the market.
It is possible you don't have to buy much at this market since there are tons of samples of everything. One of the stalls here had creamy and sharp cheeses, pockets of jerky and chopped up pieces of the sausage links (I swear some of them look like slim jims minus the artificial chemicals- give them to your kids I wonder if they would know the difference) and lots of samples so you can try it out before you bring it home. I also tried some of the jam from Beth's Jam Stand and that raspberry jalapeno packed quite a wallop that woke me right up. Some of the items could be a little cheaper like some of the berries were way overpriced but all of the items are fresh. These stalls definitely had a little bit of everything you would want at a farmers market but different stalls are only there on different days. I was here on a Thursday.
I guess I can look forward to the fall harvest and all of the new farmers markets then but this summer market is a great place to spend your lunchtime especially when it is such a nice touch of the country amongst all of the steel and concrete of midtown.
NOTE: THIS IS ONLY A SUMMER MARKET OPEN UNTIL END OF AUGUST. THEY CLOSE AT 5PM.
