We stumbled upon this place when walking around the neighborhood. I miss Australia, we like meat, pies, & meat pies. How does one not walk in?
We were actually already full from dinner, but we still wanted to try a meat pie, so we shared a steak pie & a bottle of Coopers ($6).
$6 Guinness Steak & Mushroom Pie – green peppercorn and horseradish gravy
I thought it was a decent meat pie. For $6, that's not bad for a meaty snack these days, especially in this town. If I were to eat this by myself, it would be enough to fill me up. It would be a good lunch. The pie was flaky and had a good crust. The filling tasted like gravy with mushroom & steak.
Our server was so nice. He told us it would take a couple of minutes to heat up the pie, if we didn't mind waiting. We said no and pulled up a stool. The pie was actually done pretty quickly. I didn't think it was even necessary for him to say there would be a wait.
Not only that, he also gave us a complimentary Sausage Roll.
$4 Sausage Roll – This tasted like the pie except with pork and vegetables and even more crunchy in roll form.
I thought the food was decent quality and I was pleased with the service.
Then another customer walks in and places an order. He asked for boiling hot water. When I heard this, I sort of reflexively raised an eyebrow… o.O … Our server asked why the customer needed boiling water. The customer replied he wanted to disinfect the silverware. The forks & knives are in a storage container on the counter. Our server kindly replied that he need not worry and the silverware is clean enough to use. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing that food establishments are prohibited from serving scalding hot liquids for legal reasons. Also, I think that you could get hurt a lot faster with boiling hot water than you would with a dusty fork which you can clean with a napkin instead.
That's not all. This customer also had the nerve to ask how Tuck Shop is able to stay in business since the shop does not get busy. Granted, the place was pretty empty when we were there that evening. However, the place is pretty small. I imagine most people grab a pie to go. Still, I thought that was a little rude to ask such a question. But again, our friendly server was nice and replied that they actually do get quite busy at night, especially because they still open into the wee hours of the morning. I hope Tuck Shop continues to do well.
Basically it was the service that impressed me the most. The server responded to these strange questions with ease. He was friendly, outgoing, and engaging, not only to us, but also to another larger party. Definitely makes people feel welcome.
My boyfriend gets me. He takes me to a pie place where the pies are filled with meat. That's how I know it's meant to be.
I'm a big fan of the lamb and the classic beef. Red meat is the way to go here. The classic chicken pot pie was great too though. I also love how the filling is entirely surrounded by a tasty flaky crust, served on a plate, rather than being served in a foil dish with just the crust on top. It's a really pleasant surprise and pleasing to the eye. It's also a great way to absorb some alcohol after a night on the town.
Also, if you go here and get the Kale salad… I don't like you… *squinty eyes*
This place is just okay? It's a small place on 1st street with a couple of seats. I came late on a Saturday night and there was a guy working (Michael?) who was really friendly and seemed to know the few other people that came in. I haven't had much experience with Australian meat pies, but I came here to try the chicken pot pie because I was craving one. Maybe they're different in Australia, but it wasn't what I expected. It was just overall "meh." Cool vibe, but the food is just so-so.
The classification on Yelp as "desserts" is off, as you can certainly have a full meal here (savory items as well as sweet – and both very filling). The service is fast and the food is fresh. Great for stopping in to get a nice snack or meal.
I understand that it is more of a British than American tradition to eat meat pies (they were AMAZING in London) so I was thrilled when my friend pointed out that such a spot exists here in NYC. There was a large variety of flavors (shredded pork, beef, tow types of chicken, VEGETARIAN, macaroni and cheese, etc). Very inventive flavors. They had desserts, too.
I had the beef pie, which was hot and fresh. Very tasty and they did not skimp on the beef at all. I will be back here for sure as I want to try the other flavors. The interior decoration is excellent and the persons working there as well as the guests seemed to be from Australia (judging by the accents). There are two tables inside and some bar seating – very small and cute.
I highly recommend this place and it is wonderful that the LES/EV area continues to inspire fantastic, original restaurants. I don't know of any other such places in the area.
A lovely Australian snack shop with affordable bites and a friendly staff.
Been here twice, tried the following:
Traditional meat pie – a little fatty, tasty, $6
Chicken pot pie – incredible crust, lacking a bit of flavor on the inside, $6
Pork and sage roll – life changing, $4
Homemade ginger soda -perfectly spicy and sweet, $2.50
The staff here are too kind, and the options are just enough that you'll never get bored. The brussel sprouts also look fantastic.
On our way out, the kind cashier (with adorable Aussie accent) offered us 2 free "party pies" -mini traditional pies that are meant to give away, never to sell.
This type of customer love and great food deserves 5 stars, and I will definitely return.
I'd been here once before, about 3 years ago, but I couldn't remember the restaurant until i stepped back in the other day. My boyfriend got the traditional beef pie and I got the Guinness steak. The space was VERY small and the two of us decided to plop down on the two seater by the window. I think there are about a dozen seats MAX. The pies are good for takeout though, you could definitely walk and eat one of these things.
Both of our pies weren't particularly amazing or memorable. The crusts were very thick and doughy. I had to saw with a knife and fork for a solid minute to get through the bottom half of the pastry. I preferred the traditional beef filling more than my Guinness steak filling. The beef was more ground up and packed a lot of flavor. The Guinness sort of tasted like a stew? But the meat was VERY chewy and a bit lacking in quality. In the end my boyfriend and I wound up spooning out the filling of our pies and just eating that, ignoring the not-so tasty crust altogether. I doubt you could find other meat pies in the city for the same low price as Tuck Shop, but you could probably find somewhere tastier.
In LES this is the place to come. They have good pies, but the SAGE ROLL is amazing. Its crispy, flaky, buttery goodness packed with meat. I will say on a slow week night the pies will possibly not be as fresh as the ones on a weekend or what not, but they are still good. Definitely though mix the sweet chili sauce and siracha sauce to make an excellent dipping experience for your sage roll. 😉 (TUCK SHOP! BRING BACK THE BUFFALO CHICKEN PIE)
Meh–the only word I can really use to describe pot pie here. And believe me when I say id never use such mediocrity to describe the immaculate conception that is pot pie.
If there was a pot pie connoisseur, I'd sign up because I can't get enough of the stuff. Tuck shop's pot pie can only be described by meh. The crust wasn't flaky and was too dry, and the filling was just okay. The poppy seed on top was cute but did nothing for the actual flavor–why is it even there? Perhaps I would be willing to give Tuck Shop another try, but I would not venture out of my way here.
