The Donut Pub

“Also tried some of my friend's red velvet mini doughnut which wasn't as good (probably because I'm not as enthused about cake doughnuts).”

“It was too good to pass up, and now my standards for donuts are much higher (goodbye, krispy kreme!).”

“Old school, diner style to the point where it's ALMOST novel, but still authentic.”

  1. The high rating on this place is very misleading!!

We came here expecting for a sweet treat after brunch, boy were we wrong.

After walking in at around 10am on a Sunday, we noticed half the shelves were empty…. Not like, sold out empty, but they were empty and didn't have racks or anything. There were big clumps of old donut crumbs all over the shelves and the ground and counter was dirty and old.

We then proceeded to pay $4.75 (chocolate croissant donut) for one of the worst donuts we've ever had, granted me and my BF aren't donut people, but this was just bad food.

The women behind the counter were also impossible to get their attention… The coffee and counter area reminded me of a truck stop unfortunately.

We didn't even finish the donut… I think it was from the day before.. It was tough and stale.. And filled with what tasted like packaged sugar frosting.

And when we didn't finish the woman behind the counter came up and said "oh was it not good?" As if she'd heard it many times before….

Plenty of cutsey bakeries and donut shops in NYC, this place doesn't stand much of a chance :/

  2. One word, wow. I CAME for their cute diner esque decor, but I STAYED for their chocolate cannoli flavor croissant donut. One bite into it and I literally felt like I was in heaven. Though they're not exactly cheap, (I think I remember each of those special donuts to be just under $5) they're definitely worth the splurge.

The guy behind the counter was also helpful and friendly, we made the indecisive choice to take it to go but ended up changing our minds at the last minute to have a seat and eat our sweets, and he brought us waters without asking. How nice!

There's current some construction going on near by that totally almost made me overlook this cute little shop, but I'd say it's definitely worth making the trip here. (Even if only for that chocolate cannoli cronut!)

  3. Good but not great.

Hubs has been wanting to try this place out for the longest time. Every time we come back to NY, we drive by this donut shop and we just never get around to stopping by until most recently.

It's open 24 hours, which is very cool. Employees are friendly and very helpful. They even gave us a warm goodbye as we left. Love the old school feel of this donut shop with counter seating and stools that spin. They have quite a variety of donuts and other goodies. As far as flavor and consistency of the donuts we tried, we thought they were OK. These definitely aren't some of the best donuts we've ever tasted nor were they bad in any way. If you're in the area and in the mood for a donut and some coffee, this is a nice place to drop by. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here though.

I'm glad we checked this place out and appreciate the friendly service.

  4. I came in at 4 am and thought finally a place that will feed me something delicious and sugary. I only got one of the two correct…

The doughnuts were stale and they seemed to have been recently put out considering none of the selves were too empty.

After taking a bite and realizing how terrible the donut was I proceeded to ask the man behind the counter if he made breakfast sandwiches. He answer by telling me it would have to be a microwaved sandwich and that he couldn't make anything on a stove.

I then proceeded by leaving and throwing out most of my five dollar donut.

    Awful.

  5. The donut pub has an awesome selection of doughnuts including varieties of traditional, cake, and cronut. You can't go wrong with any of them though my favorite was the neon tiger which featured several flavors of icing on a regular doughnut.

Saul helped us behind the counter. He was very knowledgable and friendly.

Note that Donut Pub does not have a bathroom for customers.

  6. We ordered the s'mores croissant donut, maple bacon croissant donut, neon tiger donut and chocolate dipper donut. The croissants were about $5 and the regular ones were about $3.

The croissants, though overpriced, were heavenly. My favorite was the s'mores which was arranged like you eat a typical s'mores sandwich. It wasn't overly sweet and the the donut was airy. I wasn't a fan of the neon tiger donut which has about 5 flavor icings going on in your mouth (banana, strawberry, chocolate, etc). It had an artificial taste. The chocolate dipper was good but nothing amazing. It was basically the super fresh version of the Entenmenn's chocolate covered donut.

Service was attentive and the workers were friendly. It was annoying that they had no bathrooms.

  7. Not impressed, and my experience was marred by the negative attitude of the woman 'helping' us. During a recent visit, my friend and I walked in because we wanted something sweet after our meal, and I suggested donuts. I figured this place was perfect because of its proximity to Union Square, where we could grab our items and go to the park.

Initial impressions upon walking in were good. I was happy to see a decent selection to choose from, but I was confused about the pricing though and it wasn't clear what donuts were how much (specialty vs the regular donuts). My friend picked a glazed donut and I picked a specialty donut, but because of the price difference, I asked her to swap it out for a glazed donut instead. She did so, but with the most negative of attitudes possible. It wasn't like there was a line out the door and I was taking all day to make a selection, I just wanted a simple swap, one item for another. For her to nearly rip the donut out of the bag, toss it back onto the rack, grab a glazed donut while knocking several others off the rack and onto the floor, that was an appalling display of behavior. In other words – NOT COOL! I'm patronizing the business, and I want to get something, and to treat a paying customer in that fashion, it left such a horrible impression on me. I paid for our items and we left. I wish I had a better experience on the customer service side of things.

  8. A 24 hr donut place is always good in my book! They have a great variety. You can get the classics (glazed, chocolate, etc.) and some crazy flavors too. I ordered a crazy one- cannoli creme filled "cronut". It was pretty good. More pastry than donut but that's what I ordered. Will definitely be back to try some of the more traditional flavors!
