  1. Oh I'm DEFINITELY a fan of Holey Cream, especially after what I experienced on a recent visit. Two of my favorite desserts in the same combination – donuts and ice cream?! And the fact that I got to build my own donut ice cream sandwich??!!

It's important to exercise patience because it does take time to build your dessert of preference. However, the end result is very much worth it, believe me! It may help to show up a bit later, or at a time when there isn't a line or a serious wait time.

Once you get in line, think strategically, but don't think too hard. First, select your donut, next pick your ice cream, and I recommend that you diversify your ice cream scoops. There are a few ice cream flavors to choose from in the display, so think about how to pair up different flavor profiles. Understand how to work with your palate. After those two critical steps are complete, you then get to garnish your donut ice cream sandwich with some of the goodies in the display. Don't hold back, let your creativity fly! It's supposed to be fun, and I can't tell you how much fun I had both participating in it's creation and watching it happen in front of my eyes.

  2. I should start by saying that the concept of this place is more or less my dream business. For my birthday this year, I asked that we just skip cake and get donuts and ice cream instead to make ice cream sandwiches with them. So when I realized that Holey Cream was within a block of where we were staying in NYC, I knew we had to make a stop. I about ran there when I found out, only to realize I wasn't hungry at that time.

We stopped here late one night after a B'way show. I can see why others have complained about the service being a little lacking, they weren't THAT busy yet they still snapped at us to move farther in and didn't greet anyone who entered. But it was going to take a lot to turn me away from my dream business so I stuck around.

I wasn't sure what combination [this was the hardest part of the whole experience] to get so I just went with the first combination I could decide. There were a lot of different options! We did a donut with chocolate icing, graham cracker crumbs and smores ice cream, all topped off with marshmallow sauce.

We actually carried it a block back to the place we were staying before digging in and it held up well despite a very warm night. It….was….excellent!!!

I was worried about the donut being hard to cut through with the spoon needed for the ice cream, but it was totally fine! The smores ice cream is delicious and the combination was just awesome.

They also had an assortment of other baked goods but I definitely recommend the donut sandwich if that sounds good to you. $8 seems a bit high, but for the quality and the size, it was a pretty fair NYC price.

I would definitely return, after I brainstorm a new combination, and only wish I could have this every year on my birthday!

  3. Ill chalk off the first time to a fluke. I called again to have them deliver for a birthday and they were awesome! I spoke to the manager and he was very patient with me and gaveme the time to explain their delivery options, what flavors I should go for and timing of delivery. This time everything went off without a hitch and the product was awesome! Everyone enjoyed their donut/ice creams and were craving more. It was so good, they want to order again for upcoming birthday's.

  4. You should try at least once. Not a A++ dessert.. why?? Well the pictures look great and tasty but the cons are:

    – Stale cereal (fruit loops esp.)
    – Donut wasn't fresh (it would be sooo much better IF it was Krispy Creme donuts!)
    – Ice cream wasn't as tasty

Overall the looks of it was a treat. But who knows.. next time the cereal and donuts could be fresh… i'll give you one more try next time……

  5. I might be pre-diabetic after this place!

Located in Theater District, Holey Cream is within a small, slightly run down building. Upon entrance, there is minuscule seating available for three to your right. There are four foldable chairs right in front of the shop for those who want to sit and eat. In addition, there is an illustration of the right wall demonstrating how to order your ice cream sandwich.

If it's your first time, I'd get the glorious sandwich for $8 that most definitely shareable between 2 people.

Donut: Chewy, simply glazed donut that is cut horizontally in half.

Ice cream: There were probably 18 flavors to choose from! Only one sample of ice cream per customer. I was debating between Red Velvet Cupcake and S'mores but had to choose my one sample card for S'mores. It was absolutely delicious and smooth that I immediately said yes!

Icing: Two options of chocolate and vanilla were available. I chose the latter option, who knows why. The top half of the donut is lightly dipped horizontally into the warm icing, as it cools down when in the air.

Topping: One choice of topping above the icing. Decided to go with Oreo pieces because you can never go wrong with that. Think of toppings that you find in a frozen yogurt place if you're not sure.

Each customer is limited to one sample of ice cream or of anything. The customer service is below average – nothing but attitude when it was not busy!

All in all, it is a decent dessert place to drop by to try. Holey Cream offers hand dipped donuts, ice cream, sundaes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, frozen yogurt, sorbet, and smoothies.

  6. This place has so much potential. Donuts and ice cream are 2 of the most delicious things on the planet. It's not possible to mess that up…or is it? Holey Cream does a fairly good job of not doing such a great job of pairing these two beautiful creations.

I came in here on a Wednesday afternoon with 3 other ice cream lovers. Upon walking in, we noticed about 20 or so different donut options that were displayed behind the glass. Though the options looked plentiful, they also looked a bit stale. Since I did not order a donut, I realize that it is possible that the donuts on display may not actually be the donuts that they serve. It's possible that the served donuts are in a deliciously moist area behind the counter, but I wouldn't have any idea. Either way, someone should do something about that display.

Even though it was a Wednesday afternoon, the place was still fairly busy. Thankfully while we waited, we were able to try a few flavors. They have soft serve, hard scooped ice cream and low fat sorbet choices to go in a waffle cone, wafer cone or cup. That is if you're not up for the donut ice cream mountain that this place is famous for.

So how was the ice cream? It was ok. It tasted like ice cream you may get from your local bodega or the supermarket. It wasn't anything special. This place is close enough to times square. If you're looking for good ice cream, you can definitely find something else. If you're looking to take a photo of a sub par glorified ice cream mound, this is your place. You make the choice.

  7. Cute little hole in the wall ice cream place. Went with a friend on a nice Wednesday night around 9:30pm and it was packed. The line was about 15 people deep but it moved pretty quickly. It was difficult to see the flavors due to the crowd. Other people were getting the donut ice cream sandwich creation however I just stuck with a kiddy ice cream which was plenty for me. Personally though the prices were a little steep; my kiddy one scoop was $5. But I guess it is homemade and I do love in NYC so what do I expect. Happy we stumbled upon it when we were having ice cream cravings but wouldn't rush back anytime soon.

  8. Used their uber rush service when we were craving some sweets late at night. They came through and had order to us sooner than expected. We had some cupcakes and doughnuts for in the morning. The delivery was awesome. Right to our room. The cupcakes were hitting the crave, we had red velvet, Oreo, peanut butter and vanilla with sprinkles. The doughnuts smell really fresh and good, but still full from my giant cupcake late last night.
I would recommend them – not necessarily a gourmet or cake boss place, but the sweets were good and the service was impeccable. The cupcakes are literally huge! This is why I'm still full after one. Be prepared to have your crave satisfied
