“The other is (don't cringe)
scallion cream cheese with fresh lox on an onion roll.”
“The chicken salad is so-so, the egg salad and tuna salad are better; the shrimp salad (when they have it) is, for this price, THE BEST.”

Sugar Bun is a neighborhood bakery in Howard Beach that serves an assortment of pastries, breads, sandwiches, hot bevarages and soups. It's a great place to go when you're looking for a quick breakfast bite on the run. The establishment receives a lot of take-out customers, but there are a few tables that you can use to have your meal. The place is nothing innovative, but their food and service is pretty good.
Not a big fan of this bakery. The service is so so, the cakes are sometimes really good, but sometimes stale. If you eat in their cafe, they rush you out to turn the table over. Their sandwich platters are very expensive and they nickel dime you to death.
Also, back in the day, I worked in the store next door and dare I mention some of the "critters" that would pay us a visit every so often….
Sugar Bun is a full service bakery that also doubles as a breakfast/lunch spot.
I have only had breakfast here and I thoroughly enjoyed it. They have great fresh bread and bagels and the coffee is good too.
The bakery is pretty busy during the morning hours, as you might imagine.
As Romana pointed out, it seems like it is a gathering place for Seniors, which isn't a bad thing. They get some colorful characters in there.
The staff is friendly and keeps the line moving.
I've been getting breakfast and desserts from Sugar Bun for a few years. It's nothing spectacular but the prices are decent and the location is convenient. The service is not very friendly (being in Howard Beach maybe it's a race thing, who knows?) so I like to call ahead and spend as little time in there as possible. Today I called my order in: French Toast with 2 scrambled eggs ($5.95 according to the menu). I picked up my order and left, but when I was almost home I happened to check the bag and see no french toast. I go back and the girl tells me it's $4.95 extra for french toast. What?! But that's what I ordered. French toast with eggs. She refused to give me my french toast if I didn't pay extra. So I payed $5.95 for 2 cold scrambled eggs. Seriously? I am beyond livid. I will never eat here again and I will make sure no one I know eats here again.
Classic Howard Beach staple. This bakery has been featured on numerous lists. I enjoy almost everything sugar bun makes but I will suggest the philly fluff as the number 1 cake they make. They also make a coffee cake flavored iced coffee that is out of this world. The workers are so friendly and helpful. I recommend to all.
I've bought cakes from them and their pretty good! They have a few options though but I can vouch for great pastries. The place is clean and have lots of seating . I've bought their pastries to take to my coworkers and they like them. So why three stars ? I take two stars away for service The employers usually have attitude and I can't understand why? I'm courteous so….. I expect the same.! Lighten up ! Have a cannoli ! Ugh!
I stopped in here because I a sweet tooth junkie and wanted to see what they had for me to munch on. It was about 5pm on a weekday and fairly empty. The server was a young lady who was very friendly. I told her since this was my first time I just wanted 1 or 2 pieces of the pastries. She was cool and also gave me a sample of one them which was quite tasty. I ordered the chocolate and rasberry Rugelachs which were delicious. I also ordered a few cookies which were just as tasty. I was pleasantly surpised with how tasty all my items were and will definitely make a return trip when Im in the area.
