Ah, ha ha. My God, while our food did show up and our waffles were delicious and her bacon and my sausages were fabulous, it did take 20 minutes for our bill to arrive. We watched at least three groups leave because they couldn't track down a waitress.
Even with that, we will absolutely be back. In fact, you might see us here next Saturday morning. Try to find a nice diner like this uptown! It's a gem.
My neighborhood default go to place with the ghetto roommate 🙂
I just moved to Washington Heights and Coral is the first place I truly enjoy eating. There aren't as many choices up here but it makes me happy that Coral has pretty much anything a genuine Jersey style diner would have. My sister and I went to Coral New Years Day for breakfast and, although it was crowded, our waitress was so sweet and got our order almost perfect. I had great fresh fruit, the coffee was excellent, the waffles were delicious and my sister enjoyed her omelette. I will definitely be back with friends.
As we approached the restaurant, my boyfriend and I were somewhat taken aback by the exterior. Parts of the glass (or plastic) in the front door were missing. Upon walking inside, a large arrow painted on the wall directs you to the restaurant upstairs. We went for breakfast so it was pretty empty.
We were immediately given two glasses of water, which pleased my perpetually thirsty boyfriend. I ordered an egg white omelet with mushrooms and feta, but received an egg white omelet with spinach and feta instead. Probably because my waitress didn't write down the order but instead relied on her memory. Either way, I didn't mind the mix up, as the omelet was pretty good. My bf ordered the Coral omelet which wasn't on the menu but was recommended by the waitress. It had baby shrimp, avocado and scallion. He thought it was actually quite good.
The happy hour drinks on the table definitely caught my eye, I may go back to try them. They sounded delicious but were much more expensive than your typical happy hour specials. I'll still probably give them a try, hopefully it'll be worth it if the drinks are strong enough.
Coral Restaurant is a nice place for breakfast if you want your typical diner food, especially considering the dearth of sit-down breakfast places in the neighborhood.
I was watching a Paula Dean cooking show yesterday (yes, my life is that lame) which of course got me thinking about grits. Which got me thinking about Coral. Coral offers grits with your breakfast as a "healthy" (ha, ha) alternative to home fries. They are also amazing!
I love the people who work here. They quickly remember your order if you're a regular. They do the egg white substitution without charging extra (or at least that's how it used to be). They also have fresh half grapefruits and fruit salad, which seems like it should be standard for a diner but was not expected a neighborhood featuring bacalao and mofongo.
This was also my first lunch meal after moving into the neighborhood in 2004. It is a solid place with good burgers and fries and even salads. It used to be a hole in the wall but after renovations, it has expanded with a really nice upstairs. Good coffee, too, in cute mugs that match the light fixtures. I definitely miss the Coral.
"Meh. I've experienced better." is the best way to put it. I've definitely had better diner food but it isn't terrible. I once ran in before work to get a bacon egg and cheese on a roll, and to be honest, it was overpriced and the ones I get in the carts outside are way better.
