  1. In the late 70's and early 80's there was a TV series called "In search of" starring Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame. I came to know it through reruns on A&E during the early 90's and each week a paranormal topic would be explored. Think of it as a predecessor to Ancient Aliens.

So on New Year's eve we were "in search of" not the Loch Ness Monster but rather a wine shop to pick up a bottle of vino instead of arriving empty handed at a friend's party.

Sheer luck alone drew us to Royal Wines and Liquors as we had crossed from the east side of 9th Avenue to the west. As an exercise in retro wandering we decided to forgo use of the yelp app and keep our smartphones as simple telephones. What excitement!

Lo and behold, a wine shop appeared, one of many in the area. Not quite as fancy or expensive as a shop I later encountered with the name 'vintner' in it, Royal Wines is a place to go to acquire booze– you don't care where the grapes really came from, don't require expert opinion and certainly don't need to see a map of Long Island wineries to influence your decision. Instead you need a bottle of something and preferably not to pricey.

Royal Wines meets those criteria with ease. Loads of bottles of wine under $20 and $10, including the price friendly Il Bastardo featuring a fat looking man on the bottle who must be the 'bastard'.

Service was friendly enough as I was wished a happy new year's upon checking out.  Our purchase at Royal Wines and Liquors certainly aided in making the new year's a happy one.
