Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee

“couldn't praise their iced matcha more – try it with almond milk and you will not be disappointed.”

“I saved the Mountie flavors for an autumn visit and chose Teddy Boy, which was a work of art and an innovation as far as coffee beverages go.”

“It's a bonus they're vegan (but you'd never know it), and they were baking them onsite, so everything was crazy fresh.”

  1. Cute place. Small, but I like it.

They have a lot of "specialty" drinks. Stella tastes like chocolate milk with espresso. Their coffee and iced latte are quite good as well. The waitstaff is really friendly and didn't mind that we took up most of their sitting area… and for a while as well. They have seating right outside their cafe, it'd be nice to come back when the weather's nicer.

  2. Jack's is the kind of place you can meet your picky diet vegan friend and your bagel & shmear loving friend in the same place for a morning breakfast or afternoon break.

If you're lucky, someone may even get up from one of those sidewalk cafe seats or tables just as your order is ready, and then you can really sit down and hang out for a chat.  If not- you can always try employing the stalk & stare technique until someone gets creeped out enough to leave.

The shade-grown, stir-brew coffee means low-acidity and smooth taste.  The organic fair trade mission means you can feel like a more conscious consumer even though you're still getting your drink in a takeaway cup that you'll pretend you're going to recycle when you're done.

  3. We walked into Jack's for a quick cup of coffee to go. Good service, good coffee. Can't say much else.

  4. Always perfect coffee (even decaf drinks), friendly staff, awesome cozy store but with lots of light.  I'm so glad this place exists!

  5. Jack's made me like coffee.

Some background: for many years, long into young adulthood, I truly hated coffee. Since outgrowing the early "yuck" response of childhood, I've proudly been game to try and retry various foods and flavors again and again, and for a long time coffee remained a flavor from which I instinctively recoiled. Eventually it was more a point of shame than of pride, as I realized I was missing out on an important aspect of NYC — nay, global — culture in being perpetually uninterested in "getting coffee". So one day when I was particularly underslept and desperate for a workday appropriate pick-me-up, I asked a dear friend and colleague to help me "get coffee". He wisely brought me to Jack's.

From the moment you arrive, Jack's is the kind of place you imagine wanting to go to for coffee. It smells delicious and has that warm, welcoming aesthetic and atmosphere you would expect from a neighborhood spot. They sell a variety of pastries, almost all of which are fantastic (I was underwhelmed by one, once; I don't remember which). Before I discovered I liked the taste of coffee, I loved their iced matcha. Now I also love their Americano and cappuccinos! I also appreciate their tip jar showdowns; most recently, "have a spotlight follow you wherever you go" vs "theme music for all your entrances". (I chose the latter, obviously.)

As I'm still new to this, I hope you'll forgive me for not being super descriptive as to the unique qualities of their coffee. Just trust me when I say: 1) this was where my coffee snob friend took me to change my mind about coffee, and 2) Jack's ensured his success.

  6. Cute little coffee shop. Ok coffee. Great staff. Love the outdoor seating perfect for people watching. Average drink is like 6 dollars. Little pricey for my taste but location is everything.
