  1. I absolutely love this place. Great service. Italian meats. This place reminded me of being in Italy. Delicious red wine.

  2. Hmmm … 3.5 stars. This place is better than that. Maybe the rating reflects some concern about the value because it's small plates? The value is fine for a restaurant with friendly, thoughtful, and timely service, delicious food, and beautiful outdoor seating. Here's some deets from our latest visit (Fri 14 Aug 15)

salumeri (salami) piccolo, 18 – wild boar, bresaola, prosciutto, mortadella, capicola regular and hot
    ribs, 2, ~16 – a little spicey and well-cooked
    asparagus salad, ~12, excellent

UPDATE – still 4 stars (Sat 20 Feb 16). We spent 74 on food for four plates, including the small salumi sampler, and a dessert, panna cotta. The food was more than ample for us. We reprised the ribs, shared a delightful and carefully-prepared shrimp over arugula special (17), and the signature salad to round out the meal.

BONUS – beautiful outdoor seating – and a reasonable amount of it
TIP – some plates could seem small to you, but they're fine for two
TIP – good for pre-theater dining, but use the subway afterwards (across the street) to get to the theater district without enduring traffic
TIP – make a booking! This can be a busy place
TIP – small, intimate setting, with tables close together, which can be fine for twosomes but larger parties could find the space challenging

  3. So I'm rarely up in this part of the city. If it's not for operas, it's for the Levaine cookies. So I need a lunch spot before this. I walked down the street, saw this place, checked out the menu, and chose this would be a good lunch. The only con I really had is they never told us that this was a tapas place. So the prices didn't seem all the nice once I knew they were smaller plates.

    The food:

I honestly thought it was awesome. We ordered two cheeses to start and I'm a huge blue cheese fan and I thought it was great. A couple cubes with some bread and I'm a happy guy.

My main dish I had the lasagna. The reason why I personally would rate this dish a five is because I'm not a fan of ricotta cheese. This was just mozzarella, and even though not the biggest portion, it was very delicious.

Service was very good, and had nice outdoor seating for all of those who love to people watch. Nothing like NYC people watching.

  4. The wine was alright, not fantastic, and I was disappointed with the limited by-the-glass choices. The food was equally underwhelming. The portions are teeny tiny, even by tapas standards. We shared a few plates. We ordered the salad that was suggested by our waiter, which I think was the pontormo – I honestly couldn't tell what the ingredients were, it was disgusting, don't order it and so not worth $13. We also got the gnocchi, which our waiter explained wasn't made with potatoes. Again, it was disgusting, don't order that either. The only good thing we ordered was the lasagne, which again our server explained was award winning – I don't know about award winning, but at least it was good and edible and had plenty of meat sauce.

The interior was cozy and quaint, with Italian meats and cheeses available for purchase at their deli counter. As for the restaurant food, you're being charged entree-sized prices for quarter-sized portions and the sad thing is that it's not even good. After hearing much hype about this place, I left totally disappointed.

  5. It was so much better a few years ago. You couldn't even get in. I dig the concept, the intimate atmosphere and the display case of the salume & cheeses. We just chilled out w a few bottles of Proseco, varied charcuterie of meats, cheese, imported olives, excellent olive oil, and local crusty bread. Not a bad way to enjoy a Fall Sunday afternoon.

  6. An UWS GEM! So small you need a shoe horn to get in and be warned…on a busy night your table is on short-term loan. That aside, the staff is welcoming and can direct you to the best selection of what my husband and I lovingly call meats and cheeses in the house.

It's all about small plates, meats & cheeses and wine, wine, wine! While small, the mirrored walls open the room and I'm always glad to see the giant map of Italy fashioned from plaster cast fruits, vegies and salumi.

Aside from the delicious Selezione of meats and cheses…I'm a huge fan of the Leek Torta with pancetta and parmigiano. The Fagioli is also a favorite…bean salad with heirloom beans.  Their Caprese Salad is one of the best I've had. Don't miss the Gnocchi…it's amazing.

In the end, I'd be happy sopping up their fantastic bread with their similarly heavenly olive oil and a nice Barolo for the entirety of the evening.

  7. This place is small – VERY small. They packed us in like sardines over here but the quality of the food and our friendly waitress made up for the lack of privacy / space. Their plates are also small so order multiple dishes and try a bunch of their offerings.

We started with the Caprese salad – sweet juicy tomatoes – fragrant leaves of basil and some of the best buffalo mozzarella I've had here in the states.

Moving on we shared a plate of prosciutto, crumbled parmesan and mixed olives. Standard groceries and surely overpriced for the serving but still delicious.

Next we both choose a small bowl of the same pasta – amatraciana sauce over rigs.
The sauce was meaty, smokey and just perfect!

If in the area I would highly recommend stopping in here – for those none NYC dwellers this is a good place to have dinner before a show at the Beacon since it's around the corner.

  8. Great Italian food but the portions are way too small. I had the lasagna and the antipasto for appetizer and they were both good. I really like getting meats from the deli section of the restaurant.
