  1. Killing some time before a movie, we wandered in, tried more mustards than I've had in the entire last year, and ended up buying one of the tap selections with a specialty croc.  If you're a foodie and love playing with interesting flavors- this is your indulgence, both as an in-store experience and as a product to take home.

  2. I first read about Maille in the New York Times right around the date it was opening, so I immediately bookmarked it on Yelp so that I wouldn't forget about it.

This past weekend was the first opportunity I had to stop by the store.  I immediately fell in love with the spot as I was offered free tastings of various mustards and vinegars.  Everything was incredible.  There are honestly more mustard styles than you could ever imagine.  The pictures attached to this listing show this fact clearly enough.

My favorite of the tastings was their Black Truffle Mustard.  This came straight out of a tap — the tap being Maille's unique trademark — I just had to bring home a crock of it for later use.

Add the Black Truffle mustard to just about anything and you will bring that dish to a completely new level.  Its an experience.   All mustards from the tap come in re-usable crocks that you can bring back with you on your next trip.

I can't recommend this place enough.  I will most definitely be back.

  3. Wow! I love oil and vinegar stores where you can taste the different mixes. So as a condiment fanatic, I was thrilled to see a mustard tasting boutique. Maille is a French company that makes mostly mustards. We ended up tasting quite a number of different ones, both the regular as well as the old fashioned type (with intact mustard seeds). Delicious.

  4. I enjoyed the customer service of the tall black staff member who helped me. He was personable, warm, and charming. The Asian guy with the glasses who also took care of me had a bit of an elitist, stuck-up vibe that made me feel somewhat uncomfortable. He greeted the other customers, but not me. Despite me being the only person who bought anything at the shop during that span of time. The older white people balked at the prices out loud. "43 for a SMALL jar of mustard?!" I had to point out I had brought a crock to refill to get his attention. He was, however, helpful when asked questions about the product.

He ended up chatting with me about NYCC. He pinned me right away as someone who attended Comic Con just by looking at me. And was one of THOSE people who acts like they don't understand the word "cosplay" unless it's pronounced "cōsplay" (though he sounds like a 2nd gen Asian-Am, and would definitely boggle if I pronounced it コスプレ). Hipster geek, hipster mustard sommelier. Go figure. As another customer/reviewer observed, some staff negatively profile, while a some treat every customer with respect. This was the case today.

The black guy was awesome, though. He falls into the latter group. He offered tastings, suggestions, and made light jokes. He's doing it right by staying humble.

  5. I'm all for the refill/bulk trend. I also love fancy mustards. But this store is just unnecessary. There really is no reason for mustard to be "on tap" other than that it's traditional. Draft beer tastes way better than bottled, but draft mustard? Really?

The store has an unbearably pretentious vibe, and prices to match. We needed a present for my grandfather's 91st birthday, and decided to get some old style mustard and cornichons. The employee helping us asked if we'd like a spoon for the mustard, and if we'd like it boxed; we agreed to both. The spoon is cute, basically a 3" dowel with a little carved out at the end and the Maille logo. The box is deep blue, study cardboard, with matching tissue paper. As it turns out, the tiny spoon was $6, as was the box. It would've been tacky to say "actually, never mind those," so Buyer Beware. Most stores slightly discount their gift sets, to encourage shoppers to splurge, but at Maille it's just the cost of each component  plus a fee for the box.

Come here to taste really nice mustards, and maybe buy a jar for home. Know that you might feel out of place in jeans and a tee.

  6. If you love mustard, and I mean, REALLY love mustard with high class, then head over to the only mustard boutique with mustard sommelier in NYC! They offer a wide-range of flavors in jars and even more, pour mustard on tap, "filled by hand" in stoneware jars.

No doubt they provide super high quality mustard and they are super tasty. The staff there could be… well, some of them seem to change their attitude by the way the customer looks, which I wasn't a big fan of… But some of them are super nice to everyone.

Ready my full review of this place on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

  7. I encourage you to earn the following title, Queen of Condiments. I believe in your ability to start to taste the best in sandwich accoutrement. There is no try, only this is how you do … what you do. Joshua kindly shared a mustard with subtle undertones of truffles and another one with overtones of herbs de provence. My brother then spoon fed me pureed carrots enhanced with … that's right, mustard! I felt like a baby sans le baby fat!
