Great idea and charming shop, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The complimentary heat sealing is great when buying for a gift. I think the prices are a little steep though… Union Market around the block sells local olive oil for $6.99… the smallest bottle here is double that price. Considering the turnover in the area, I'm not sure O Live Brooklyn will survive with its high pricing.
Every year I say I'm going to try to buy local for Christmas and every year I usually fair miserably. However, with an olive oil shop in my neighborhood, I felt like it was a no-brainer to stop by and purchase some gifts for the cooks in my family. Success!
The staff is great, especially for someone like me (aka I hate walking into a store when it is empty because I'm the worst at small-talk-with-perky-employees). The owner walked over and gave me a brief overview of the store and the progression of olive oils on tap from front to back (as well the delicious looking balsamic vinegars). After that, he melted into the background as I self-consciously tested olive oils in the way that the handy guides hanging around the store instructed me to. I liked almost all of them, but I knew that I had to stick to the basics for gifts for others, and so picked out a fairly mild oil. In addition to having the "olive crush date" printed on each vessel, the oil of your choice is poured into the bottle right in front of you, so you know it's fresh. As a bonus, it's fairly reasonably priced when you compare it to the extra virgin olive oils at the nearby Key Food.
I haven't given the gift yet but I'm sure it will be put to good use. In addition, if you bring back the bottle, you can receive $1 off a refill, which is a nice way to promote recycling, and a good excuse to make a return trip.
Since first discovering that there was such a thing as flavored or infused oils and vinegars I've been to a handful of shops like O Live and tried many a baby sample cups of vinegars*. O Live Brooklyn stands out to me because it has MAPLE DARK VINEGAR. Loved the first sample I tried so much I went in for a 2nd. And then I bought a bottle. It's dark, its rich, its got this hidden note of vanilla while having sweetness from the maple and a kick from the vinegar. Oh my. Delicious!
Other flavors include: Blackberry Ginger, Pear Cinnamon, Vanilla, Lavender, Strawberry, Mango, Coconut, Jalapeno, and Dark Chocolate. And alllll of them were good. I know this because I sampled pretty much every single one. If my lil' nyc kitchen could handle it I'd buy alllll the bottles.
