We found this place after spending the morning in the Brooklyn Botanic garden, hungry for some comfort food.
It's a really small place, where you order at the counter and eat in a small attic-like area upstairs. Definitely cute, but definitely cramped. I ordered the shroom melt, which was pretty blood. Kind of a small portion, and really simply made. Not necessarily a bad thing, but for the price ($8) I thought it could have been better. The bread was just basic sliced bread, sandwiching some sautéed mushrooms, cheese, and truffle oil.
My friends got the BKNY and the guac bacon paninis, and we all shared a side of mac and cheese. BKNY was probably the best out of all of them. Mac and cheese was barely cheesy and tasted like microwaved leftover mac and cheese.
Overall I was underwhelmed by Mrs. Dorsey's Kitchen. One redeeming factor is that the people there were all super friendly. But probably wouldn't be a place I'd recommend to others when they good to Brooklyn.
Overview: excellent place for a casual, comforting, cheesy meal with inventive, fresh ingredients delivered in a unique space.
We tried this fun place this past Wednesday night with positive results.
After we walked in, Ron, the owner, gave us a friendly introduction to the place and bantered with us about various options for substitutions on the menu that he felt worked best. He also introduced us to Josue in the kitchen (in view from the bar) and to the story behind the name: his grandmother, who is alive and well in Ohio today. He seemed really passionate about the business/delicious grilled cheese, and both sandwiches that we ordered were both delightful. My boo got the guac and bacon and was for sure into it. I got the shroom grilled cheese on wheat pullman with avocado subbed for the bacon (per Ron's recommendation). I really appreciated the sweetness of the tiny tomatoes paired with the slight spiciness of the arugula. It felt like the freshest grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had, bursting with flavor. It went super well with the big bottle of BYOB craft beer that we brought with us!!
We also tried the mac and cheese, which was baked mac and cheese style, with spicy onion jam mixed in. Adding a little sriracha to the top spiced it up even more.
We really wanted to try the sweet potato bread pudding, but they were out! We will have to go back another time.
PS Heard from Ron that they are getting an iced tea machine to have housemade iced tea and sweet tea in the future!
PPS Stand-up on Saturday nights! Lots of comics!
I had read about this place in TimeOut New York and was really looking forward to trying it. The atmosphere inside is very laid back: old employees and regulars get to sign the bar, the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and lovely, there is no formal seating procedure (first come first serve sort of system). The space itself is very small as well, not a great place to come with a large group of people. They have a selection of about 10 "signature" sandwiches and then you have the option of building your own. There are also a few sides you can choose from. My husband got a summer special of buffalo chicken with cheddar and I did a build your own with cheddar, avocado, and tomatoes. The way the build your own works, is that you can pick one option from each category: bread, cheese, veggie, and protein. For any additional items from each category, you get charged $1 more per item. Because I didn't pick a protein and just picked 2 veggies, they didn't charge me any extra. So nice! We also got the mac and cheese on the side.
While the server was incredibly friendly, she was INCREDIBLY slow. We came hungry, which very quickly became hangry because we had to wait about 25 minutes for 2 grilled cheeses to be made. She was very chatting and it distracted her so it took her absolutely forever to make our sandwiches. She also switched up our breads in the order. We didn't even tell her because we just wanted our food. We actually couldn't wait anymore. The grilled cheeses were pretty good but nothing all that special in my opinion. I think Melt Kraft over in Park Slope is better. The mac and cheese seemed old and there was barely any cheese in it. Seeing the pictures other Yelpers have posted of the mac and cheese make me think we got a bad batch. Everyone else's pictures make it look like cheesy goodness. There was one other couple who had to wait an equally long time for their food and requested no cheese on one sandwich and she put cheese on both. There was also a to go order that was placed and the person easily had to wait 40 mins for the food. There really needed to be 2 people cooking food in the kitchen, 1 was not enough. Prices are pretty reasonable. Not sure I would come back here.
One cool thing they do though is they deliver to Prospect Park to 3 locations: the picnic house, the bandshell, and right by the Grand Army Plaza entrance.
There's a cute plant up front with the sign 'Patience' because you're gonna need some waiting for your bite. I was the only customer and from ordering (2 sandwiches and a bread pudding) to actually having my to go bag in my hand, took upwards of 25 min. The girl who made it was pleasant, but incredibly slow.
I'd also ordered the MDK Classic bread pudding, but a few bites into eating, I realized she'd given me the sweet potato one. I was a bit underwhelmed by my little ciabatta veggie sandwich (avocado, smoked Gouda, tomato, and spicy onion jam). The spicy onion jam was tasty, but overall the sandwich still felt lacking.
I ordered a roasted turkey and cheddar for my mom and it looked a lot better and more satisfying than mine, but she said it was just OK. The saving grace was i arrived during happy hour, so only paid $5 for each which was reasonable considering I was still hungry afterwards.
When you got that craving for a grilled cheese look no further. You can also appreciate the awesome company that is Ron, the owner of this fine establishment. But don't forget why you came, the sandwiches are REDICULOUSLY tasty. Let's just say I came here for lunch and couldn't even wait a whole day to go back….I came back in a few hours….sipped a few beers(its BYOB) and listened to the DJ mixing it up. As luck would have it(or Mitch knows every deal in the city) when we came back there was a full on sandwich orgy…Not in the sense of people having sex with actual food, more so as people getting trays upon trays of different sandwiches to try for free. They all were great. In order of greatness(for my tastebuds) it goes. 1. Bacon Guac. 2. Chicken Pesto. 3. Bacon and Shrimp 4. Turkey club. I could easily eat any of them in the future and be plenty satisfied.
Remember, come for the food and amazing ownership/staff…stay for the sandwich orgy.
Five. Star. Service.
The gal at the front counter could not have been more genuinely enthusiastic to work here. She and her compatriot rocked out to '90s R&B as they slung sandwiches and stirred macaroni and cheese and for a second, I wished I was working with them because it truly looked like a good time.
When I asked for recommendations, I was given a simple yet wholly delicious option involving avocado and bacon, and I took it, though I explained that I wasn't a fan of white bread. Easy, the sandwich fairy explained. I should just get it on a pretzel bun. I took the bait.
I thought the pretzel bun would be a little odd or difficult to eat, but it turns out that MDK presses their sandwiches on a panini grill and that makes everything come together.
The macaroni and cheese was perfect, too. If I had a larger stomach, I would've gone for the full size instead of the half, but I'm grateful that they have the side portion.
When I left, the sandwich fairy remembered my name and used it like I was a regular. I felt like I was finally at home in Brooklyn… For that thirty minutes, at least.
New favorite place. I can't believe I only just went here for the first time. Adorable layout. Great grilled cheese. Great mac n cheese. There's wifi and plenty of ourself. The staff (Delisia?) was super friendly. There's a TV. And whatever you get to eat, be sure to try a side of the sweet and spicy onion/bacon/jalapeño jam. I'm gonna dream about it.
Small place that specializes in grilled cheese.
The product quality is well above average. However, the wait for it is also phenomenal. Not sure how it's possible to take close to 30 minutes to crank out 2 grilled cheese sandwiches…
Are they fermenting the cheese to order…?
Upside is that the cashier is warm and welcoming during the wait…
Par for the course.
