Looks like this place doesn't need my 5-star review to get up there, but here it is anyway.
I arrived early for lunch yesterday and noticed the great decor. Popular sort of decor lately – a small collection of antique clocks on the wall, Edison bulbs around, brads in the stools…very nice.
The menu is quite unique but has old standbys in case you're feeling classic. I ordered the veggie sandwich and fries, with no bread due to dental issues. The veggies were cooked perfectly and were so simple yet flavorful. The goat cheese was a very interesting addition. The fries were perfectly crispy and not at all greasy. I was a very happy girl!
My friend ordered the brussels sprouts hash with bacon. Her food looked great and she really enjoyed it. Lunch went by too quickly!
Service was excellent too, which made this a 5 as well – the owner or manager even came over to see how our meal was towards the end. I thought her warm way of trying to gain feedback and stay involved was important and not intrusive.
I'll be back the next time I'm in New York!
A nice 1900s-inspired cocktail bar with a great brunch menu, lively atmosphere, and a dizzying array of cocktail choices. Tanner Smith is a great diversion from the Irish bars nearby.
First of all, coming here for boozy brunch was a great idea as they offered a full brunch menu and a great selection of brunch-specific cocktails. As we walked in on a lazy Saturday afternoon, the nostalgic jazz band had already begun playing against the backdrop of wall panels fashioned after the dark Prohibition era. We shared the highly recommended Hendricks Gin Tea served in English tea pots to start off our meal. While the concept was great, I did find the strong gin to be a tad overwhelming. From its brunch menu, the lamb burger was delicious and refreshing, but just slightly on the drier side. Finally, the Brussel Sprout Hash was the best creative take on traditional potato hash that I have seen – healthy and flavorful. Nonetheless, I was really positively surprised by their brunch menu design and had a great experience here.
I came here to drink on a Friday afternoon, I think it was about 4pm. Not too crowded. And they make amazing cocktails. Some bars you can see the bar tenders just throw everything together. But here they really care about the taste and presentation. so if you're looking for a place with wonderful drinks, check this place out
The evening adventure begins as you step down the stairs to the right of the door and through the red upholstered door. They have a chill environment downstairs with booths, long rustic tables with benches, as well as bar seating.
The bartenders here more artists than anything else. They obviously love their craft and put their passion into the cocktails they serve. We had their version of the Manhattan and an Old Fashioned. Both came out delicious and strong. They first put the cocktail into an elegant glass jar. Then comes out the smoke gun, with real fire. They put the smoke into the jar and put a top on the jar, allowing the smoke to infuse into the drink. I don't know if this makes that big of a difference, but who cares, it is awesome.
This was the best old fashioned I've ever had. Smooth, full of flavor but not overpowering, all in a all a wonderful way to experience bourbon.
Tanner Smith's is a great bar to have a few drinks at if you're visiting from out of town. Located in the heart of Manhattan, surrounded by excellent restaurants, it's hard to miss with a vintage light fixture that spells B-A-R.
Smith's is broken up into two levels. The top (main) floor gets pretty crowded. It's much bigger with a long bar and numerous tables. Their full menu is available at all hours. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to chow down on anything but from the looks of it, the food is delicious. The bottom (downstairs) floor is a bit more vintage. I personally like it more than the main floor. It has a much more seductive quality to it. It also seems like the crowd downstairs is a bit younger (late 20s to mid 30s), while the upstairs is just a tad older. Regardless, Tanner Smith's offers tourists and locals alike a great watering hole spitting out craft cocktails, beers and wine.
3.5 stars. I can see this place being better for drinks but I'm not sure if I quite liked it for brunch. Came here with 2 friends on a Sunday. After a short wait, we were seated right by the band. I was super excited by this until we found out that the band is actually deafeningly loud and we couldn't actually hear each other. We requested to be put at another table, but didn't manage to wait it out/decided to just deal with the band as it became more intermittent than constant. Although the music was good, it was definitely hard to enjoy.
In terms of the food I ordered the smoked salmon eggs benedict. We also shares a tipsy teapot (the first one on the menu that is gin-based), which I really enjoyed. I wasn't a huge fan of the benedict-it was way too heavy and drenched with sauce. The only saving grace was the fries on the side, which were savory and helped me get through the brunch. The tipsy tea on the other hand was very unique and refreshing.
Would try again for drinks but definitely not for brunch!
Came here for Sunday Brunch with a few friends. They had a swing/jazz band performing right when you walk in, which added to the old school feeling ambience. They have a Tipsy Tea brunch special…for $40, you'll get an entree, 2 drinks, and a booze-infused pastry. We all decided to go with this. I ordered the avocado smash with two cocktails. My friends got the mac & cheese and breakfast flatbread with their special tea drinks. We were all very satisfied!
The service was pretty good. Our waitresses were friendly and attentive. Though our drinks and entrees came out at the same time, which wasn't ideal. Ambience is very 1920s old jazz club vibe, which was a fun and interesting setting for our causal brunch.
Overall, very good brunch fare. $40 isn't cheap, but it's worth it if you plan on doing cocktails (which alone would cost you $30). I'd be interested to try some of the other entrees and the specialty tea drinks they serve.
Stopped by for dinner on a Friday night. We were able to get a "quieter" table in the back next to three speakers.
While the menu certainly looks interesting, the food comes out tasting bland. We tried the duck confit spring rolls, the lamb meat balls, fries with cheese and gravy, and beef on lemongrass. Yes, it all sounds great but it sounds far better than it is. It isn't bad by any means, but somewhat lackluster for sure.
Okay beer selection, $14 cocktails were OK as well. Not going to lie and say this is usually my scene, but I'd still have enjoyed a little more quality overall for the prices of the food and drink.
