I'm a fan of their pickle/olive bar, and when I went last weekend, filled up one of those multi-compartment containers to the brim and then walked around trying to find a lid…there were none, so I asked a stock guy, who sighed and said "This has been a problem all day! I'm getting rid of them!" He picked up the remaining containers and walked away, leaving me standing there with a tray with no lid, and no option but to pick out each of the items and put them in separate containers myself. Could he have offered me some plastic wrap or something, so I didn't have to waste so much plastic and effort repackaging my pickles and antipasti? He just walked away, and didn't give me another glance.
Otherwise, service is mostly ok. It's a big store, with tons of product that they like to shove in the middle of aisles. The preponderance of cars in the lot means families, and when you get families, you get distracted moms leaving carts in the middle of aisles, further blocking things up. I have great experiences going there at night or off hours; not so great on weekends.
I told my colleagues that I come here for everything.. and when I say everything.. I mean EVERYTHING!
I first got hooked coming here for groceries because not only do they have a parking lot, the produce quality and variety cannot be beat anywhere else! Their meats also are really just on a whole new level in terms of quality and freshness. I've heard from some people at work that they've been hesitant on shopping here because it's "expensive", but I don't think this is necessarily always the case, my wife and I tend to always find some great deals here every time we go. Just shop smart!
Back to when I said I come here for everything… the hidden gem is UPSTAIRS! I used to come here during my 2-3 hour lunch break/gaps to eat, study and relax upstairs. Not only do they have a HUGE variety of hot/cold foods, a sushi bar, pizzas by the slice, and sandwiches (available for purchase downstairs), they also have a small little bar upstairs (serves alcohol) and a coffee shop by the front registers.
The seating upstairs is great, they have outlets available at every other table and although at first I felt a little "weird" coming to Whole Foods to do work, you definitely won't be alone… because all great minds think alike..! There are usually a good amount of people browsing the web on their laptops. (Free wi-fi!!) When weather permits, there is also outdoor balcony seating upstairs which is a plus.
So I have been a fan of Wholefoods from when I lived in Manhattan and used to go to the first location that they opened on 7th avenue in Chelsea. My loyalty to Wholefoods was so intense that when I moved to Brooklyn I used to catch the train to go food shopping at the location on 14th street…..Then I assimilated to Brooklyn and going to Fairway but silently prayed for a Wholefoods in Brooklyn.
I love the Brooklyn store because it screams green friendly from a distance. The solar panels and parking spots for those with electric cars to park are a welcomed sight. There is also a lot of glass allowing for natural light to be used. The cafe on the second floor with views of the once deadly canal is also an added place. During one of my most recent visits I saw a family hosting a birthday party for their toddler up there; who would have known. I am not sure about the cost but it seems worth checking out for kiddie parties if you have limited space.
I am not a fan of the baked goods here except for the tres leche cake which I think is to die for. I have tried the birthday cake, the macroons and a few other sweets and was disappointed. The food bar is amazing and offers a wonderful selection. When there is a game this is the place to buy wings because you can get a bucket with over 20 wings for under $5.
The fruit platters are good for someone like me who loves eating fresh assorted fruit but doesn't have time to peel and prepare it daily. At under $20 one platter lasts a week for two people. I find that the fish is pricey here so I go to Fairway for my wild salmon.
A con I have about Wholefoods is that the food in their food bar is not organic! I was shocked when I was trying to buy some cooked salmon for about $20 for the pound to find out that it was not wild…..A suggestion would be for them to label what is organic and not on their prepared foods. The assumption that most people have is that all the cooked food is organic.
The customer service is amazing, I have ordered Thanksgiving dinner from here and had no problem. I also had a bag rip in the parking lot and Jeffrey and his team ran to my rescue, they picked up my groceries and gave me a $10 gift card. I will always go to Wholefoods but I will exercise caution is what I buy that is already prepared when it being organic matters to me.
The newest Whole Foods are usually the best but I can't say that about this location. The layout feels awkward (I get trapped a lot). There weren't any of the bells and whistles they usually put in new WF. The food offerings are as good as any other.
the brooklyn gowanus whole foods is the best whole foods I have ever been to
-the company says this store will be the model of what future stores look like
-ample car and bike parking
-store is large but not overly large where you can't find anything
-large hot foods section
-items are generally in stock and fresh; most importantly this store is clean
-helpful staff
-upstairs has large indoor and outdoor dining area; also has upstairs full service bar (which shows soccer games and greenhouse (no details on this)
-lines are generally not long. in addition, there are express lines
-large beer selection
-folks complain that prices are higher at all Whole Foods vs competitors, which is true but weekly sales do help
-this store seems to have more samples than others (maybe because its Brooklyn)
-bathrooms upstairs and downstairs
-only negative is that at times there are way too many Instacart shoppers in the way
Great wholefoods. Very busy most of the time. It has a nice beer garden overseeing the wonderful Gowanus Canal lol. Service is super nice. They go above and beyond to being helpful. I love the buffet section because of the variety of foods. I wish they had more sales and better prices but that's just who they are.
My poison. Some people like jewelry and some people like nice cars. I love me some Whole Foods.
I was so excited when I found out they were opening in Gowanas. I couldn't have been more elated when I stepped foot in the first time. The parking lot is awesome with lots of spots so no need to wait. The store is huge and immaculate. Lots of staff at every corner in case you have any questions.
I'm a sucker for their tiramisu and breads. They're always so fresh and delicious. They also have a huge buffet and always changing up the menu there.
I recently bought tuna to grill at home. God! That tuna was so perfect. I feel like the fishmonger hand picks the perfect pieces to sell in store.
The produce is always fresh and quite reasonably priced. I've compared prices to a local store and was quite surprised to see WF charged less for the same or better quality.
Huge fan of the express isles. We all know Whole Foods is a super busy grocery but the express lane is perfect for people like me who can jump in to the store just for a couple of items.
If you do go by, check out the awesome upstairs area where you can sit and eat delicious Whole Foods with a great view of the Gowanas.
Whole foods is the Mecca of everything Organic, Non-GMO, and large selection of groceries. This particular store has a beer garden and brick oven pizza located on the second floor. In addition, they have a beautiful outdoor area over looking south Brooklyn. The price is right and service is great.
My wife and I always shop here and will continue to do so.
