Whole Foods Market
“Lastly, be sure to check out their wine store next store, which has a great selection, good descriptions, and amazing prices.”
“The lines at this Whole Foods are a fraction of the lines at Union Square or Columbus Circle which is just the icing on the cake.”
“I love this neighborhood in the Upper 90s…yes I know that "big box" retailing is taking over this one little stretch of UWS…but who cares?”

This is my favorite Whole Foods. I lucked out today. They had coffee for 27 cents for a small.
Today's the last day for that promo.
I noticed some Brooklyn made cupcakes and 2 inch Cheesecakes. I might try next time.
I really don't shop at WF. I find the prices too high. Plus too far to carry food bags home. Plus too 'healthy'!
I would recommend them at one time when I lived in another state. They do a great service to the community.
If you're working and can afford to spend, enjoy!
I like the looks of all the prepared foods. Trouble is when I read the ingredients I find something I am allergic to!! They have far too much combinations of ingredients. Nothing is plain. More than three ingredients, or four, and I stay away!
My family tried using them for our Thanksgiving meal a couple years ago. Never again. Not good.
Three stars for their effort and their community involvement.
overpriced but solid.
Really beautiful kale, disappointing pizza, overpriced meats, yummy mozzarella, good choices of string cheese. Crazy awesome selection of beer. If i had the money, i would shop here all the time…since I live in the building above it.
This is by far one of the best whole foods market that I've been to in the city because the lines to the register move so fast, it leaves me wondering if I'm even living in the city. They have plenty of gourmet and vegan options, and adding even more vegan items in their store.
Ps the staff here really go above and beyond as what you would expect from Whole Foods. I really cannot say anymore positive things about them.
Happy Shopping and #go vegan
I've always loved Whole Foods since my first visit in Chicago over ten years ago. Since then they have expanded by leaps and bounds and can be found in many major cities across the US, including NYC.
In many ways this Whole Foods Market serves as a central hub for the neighborhood. It is located right on Columbus Avenue surrounding several other shops. On ground level this Whole Foods Market offers quite a few different hot foods from several food bars. The check out lines and a seating area for customers are also on the ground floor. There's also a very nice bakery with fresh baked breads, parties and other delicious baked goods. Downstairs is where the groceries are located. All of the typical grocery store finds can be located there. I found it fascinating that there is an escalator specifically designed for carts to be transported to the basement floor level.
On each visit here the lines were long, but quick moving. They have a unique system worked out to ensure that customers are being served quickly and efficiently. Very nice Whole Foods market and certainly worth the visit.
The organization of this location is optimal for NYC-prepared foods, hot bar, coffee shop, and bakery on the first floor, and grocery/produce/bulk on the basement floor. Immaculately clean and organized, and not obnoxiously crowded like every other Whole Foods in NYC.
The selection of produce, vegan specialty items, and vegan bakery items is impressive. Lots of interesting brands and varieties that I hadn't even seen before. They have an attached wine shop, which is a great touch to an already awesome location. Staff was very friendly, and I was able to check out in 5 minutes. This is the best Whole Foods in New York City. I didn't know it existed until yesterday, and what a pleasant surprise!
I don't think this WF gets stocked regularly like others do. There's often barren shelves and missing veggies and other stuff. I came in one day and there was no basil. None. At all. An employee did go look for some for myself and another customer, but no luck. Sorry, but things like that get on my nerves.
And even worse, I've had stale baked goods from here as well. Cookies and rice crispy treats I've had were rock hard. Also, some of the veggies I buy spoil far too quickly. Oh and even worse, in a packaged herb box, I found the skeletal remains of some sort of hard shell bug. Tf??
I know they have a satisfaction guarantee, but I've never bothered taking it up with them. I'm sure their customer service is excellent. But their quality assurance most definitely is not.
On a positive note, the employees are very helpful. I've had pleasant experiences at the coffee shop, cheese bar, bakery/bread counter, and charcuterie station.
Overall… the selection isn't the widest, and I'm a little disappointed as far as the quality control. Just barely meets my WF needs.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the previous review I wrote this place from nearly 6 years ago. Ha!
Admittedly, I do miss when I lived on 108th and Columbus and could just walk down there; 'twas very convenient, indeed. Still, even as a current Inwood resident, I still do like coming to this particular Whole Foods location. My beau lives near by, so when I leave his place to catch the C at 96th, it's perfectly situated. Conversely, if I need to go to Whole Foods for something more specific, it's a definitely more direct to take the A down to the Columbus Circle location, but this location is MUCH less crowded, more times than not. It's worth walking those extra couple of blocks.
I used to be a more regular Whole Foods shopper on the whole, and goodness knows I use to hit up the buffet any chance I could in my young UWS days. Haha. But, as I've gotten older, though my salary has gone up, so have student loan payments; I've become quite adept to getting the most bang for my buck at the local Fine Fare and Inwood Greenmarket.
Whole Foods is Whole Foods is Whole Foods, in my opinion. Just the layouts are different. I find what I need, then I peace out. We all know the joke: "Whole Paycheck". Har har har. Yeah, it's possible to pull an Abbi from "Broad City" and spend over a $1,000 without trying (especially if you're high on pain killers). Still, because I'm usually going there with very specific items in mind, I tend to actually save money! My favorite coconut oil is $5.99 there, compared to $15.99 for the same jar at my Fine Fare! Yeah, I'll travel to save $10 for something like that. Also, buying grains, et al, from the bulk bins downstairs is a wonderful thing.
I like this Whole Foods, indeed. It still holds a very special place in my heart, back when I was a 25 year old NYC-newb enamored with their buffet, pre-portioned grapes, and playlist, clearly. 😉
I don't hate this Whole Foods, because I used to shop at Trader Joe's which used to be ten times crazier. It's also the reason why I started shopping at Whole Foods. I also like that Whole Foods has stuff that is not Whole Foods branded (but obviously if you buy their brand it is cheaper and they do have awesome stuff). Additionally, they have sales and coupons (they take manufacturer's coupons too, unlike TJ's). I also like that they tell you where the produce comes from and whether or not it is organic. It's helpful if you care about where your food comes from. Plus the produce is also great, never had a problem with it – a lot of the produce I'd get at TJ's would start going bad within a day (like the apples that would get moldly within a day or two, even though they were perfectly fine at the store).
Contrary to popular belief, WF is actually not that expensive if you're using a lot of their coupons and taking on sales. A lot of the things at WF are similarly priced as TJ's, like their hummus ($2 and you get waaaay more selections that TJ's, for sure!). The WF brand is also great to get since it's much cheaper. But they also have coupon booklets lying around and sometimes the cashiers are great and will scan them for you if they think you have something in your bag that has a coupon. You can also find many of their coupons online if you go on the website and click for the UWS store. Plus, the app is great. You can get awesome coupons like $5 off a purchase of produce, which makes the trip totally worth it.
Additionally, you can find a lot of awesome vegan supplements like chia seeds, tofu, almond milk, nutritional yeast – anything you would ever want! I don't feel like they have a large vegan selection for meat and dairy substitutes, but still better than your regular grocery store.
