  1. I've always loved food from the small restaurants because that'a usually where the best food and service comes from. Grange was recommended to me by a friend who took her grandmother here for a birthday dinner.

Located on a busy street and the heart of Westwood, grange offers seating of 35-40 max and a simple menu selection that'll have your palettes bouncing around in your mouth. Yes that was an odd statement, and yes the food is that awesome.

The decor is very cute with its wooden tables, cushioned seats, and a small fire furnace on the corner of the restaurant, this place offers a really intimate feel while still allowing small groups to enjoy each other's company. Being that this was such a small place, I really don't have much to say about its decor other than the simplicity of everything, giving it an odd cozy and welcoming vibe.

I really wish I remembered the name of my waitress cuz she was SO friendly and helpful in answering any questions I had about the menu and describing their specials for the day. She was attentive but not to the point where she was annoying and acknowledged us when needed. Hats off to her as it looked like she was waiting the whole place herself, which she did beautifully (especially having to also wait on a group of 8). When the waitress wasn't around, the hostess came by to the tables making sure we were ok. Five star rating for the wait staff.

If only I could've ordered everything on the menu to try, I would have. My husband and I started off with the deviled egg appetizers and this sweet potato specials. This was my first time having deviled eggs that were chipotle and curry flavor. I thought the eggs were amazing and really only wish there were more! The sweet potato was lightly fried and mashed up with some onions. I really don't know how to explain what that sweet potato appetizer was but all I can say is that it was delicious.  For my main course, I ordered the duck which came with a pomegranate molasses glaze, steamed veggies, and whipped sweet potato. My husband ordered the skirt steak with a side of salad and French fries. The presentation of the dishes were wonderful and the taste of the food was even better. It's really had to cook good duck and I feel The chefs here really know how to cook duck. If I'm being truthful, the duck wasn't AMAZING but it was definitely not horrible. I cleaned out the plate but there is a place in Ridgewood where I've had amazing duck. My husband's skirt steak was cooked to perfection. It was ordered medium rare and whatever sauce they put over the steak was fantastic. His only complaint was having his salad touch his hot food, so if you're one of those people, I suggest requesting the salad to be put to the side. Another thing he didn't enjoy was the salad and the dressing itself. While I found the salad to be delicious, I do have to say it's kinda weird eating warm salad. The dressing on the salad could've her a little less, but the food overall was a four star.

This place IS BYOB and the prices are pretty average. I would recommend this restaurant for any occasions with a friendly reminder to make reservations and to confirm your reservations the day before or before 3pm the day of as they have very limited seating.

Additional bonus is if you check in on Yelp, you can get a free dessert OR a free hug! While I liked our waitress a lot, I felt the free dessert was much needed 🙂

  2. Growing up my parents were never really "fancy food" eaters so understandably it was much to their surprise to see that as I grew older I would try anything and everything put in front of me to expand my palate. Glen Rock didn't exactly have the most creative cuisine to offer and it wasn't until I moved to Philadelphia, joined Yelp and made friends of similar food fascination that I was introduced to amazing chefs and plates that were beyond my comprehension. Unfortunately my career in non-profit doesn't always allow for higher price tag dinners, and though Bergen County is often more reasonably priced than Philadelphia I still have to pick and choose wisely which meals are going to be worth the abuse on my credit card. As Mother's Day approached I knew I needed to do something a little extra special and having perused the Bergen County blogs reading that Chef Christine had recently closed her Fair Lawn restaurant, scoured over articles to see where she was headed next…enter Grange.

Getting a reservation was a little tricky, but not impossible. To be honest the only suggestion I can make for Grange is their reservation system as I had to leave a voicemail and wait for a return call, this may have changed since their opening though. Luckily because the restaurant had only opened days prior, a return call from the owner came just a day later with no problem in securing seats on a day which reservations are typically made weeks in advance.

We arrived a few minutes early, were seated immediately, and took a look around. A charming little restaurant, cozy, rustic and comfortable with seating for only about 40 reminding me of my favorite Philadelphia suburban restaurant, Sycamore. Because there had been no menu listed online, I wasn't able to do my pre-dinner decision making and so the three of us oo'd and aah'd over the choices changing our minds over and over again.

We started with a deliciously creamy chicken liver pate and wild berry jam, I went on limb ordering this only knowing that neither had ever tried it, my mom's love of liverwurst, and my brother being the open minded type. It was well received, all enjoyed, and shortly our entrees arrived. Brother ordered the diver scallops, I almost didn't get a chance to try it because he liked it so much. I snuck a little bite when he wasn't looking and glad that I did, four perfectly cooked scallops sat atop a barley risotto with an asparagus dressing and pea shoots. It looked beautiful, it tasted wonderful, brother was happy. Mom ordered the filet mignon ordering it rare finding it atop a little mound of mashed potatoes, a side of asparagus and topped with a fresh herb chimichurri. It hurt my ears to hear another diner close by ordering a filet well done, this steak should really be done no other way than the rare that mom received; to each their own I suppose. My order of duck was absolutely phenomenal, I'm too much of a wuss to cook it myself because it just seems like too delicate a bird and  easily capable of being screwed up so this was a real treat. The blackberry jus was just the right amount of sweet for the delicate meat, the side of wilted greens was a nice compliment and the sweet potato fritters were lovely. Crisp on the outside and wonderfully creamy on the inside, the only downside was that they became a little soggy because of the jus, but really that's not too much of a negative simply because the blackberry sauce was just so delicious. With next to nothing left on each of our plates, and though completely unnecessary, we went ahead and ordered a chocolate bomba. Surprisingly light in contrast to its appearance, the three of us finished up the meal with the sweet chocolate treat and grabbed the check.

Three entrees plus an appetizer and a dessert came in around $150 including tax and tip. The fact that this is a BYO keeps the cost very reasonable and allows you to pair your meal according to your own tastes. Is this a restaurant that I can visit every time I go home for a visit? Not quite, but I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a NYC caliber meal in the suburbs. Will I be back again? Absolutely, with a menu that reflects seasonal availability there's no reason why anyone should make this a one-time-only visit restaurant.

  3. I really wanted to love this food.

    The place is gorgeous.
    Service is tremendous.
    Location is excellent.
    Menu is creative. ….

But the food was not for me.

We started with the deviled egg app and the deep fried zucchini flower with some other fried bits.

We were served 3 1/2 eggs.  Of the 3, I only found one tasty.  The chipotle.  The other 2 were way  too salty ( caeser and the truffle)

    My bf loved all 3.

The deep fried flowers were nice- they were stuffed with cheese .   It was accompanied by fried zucchini and some huge fried pancake  that tasted like a  sauerkraut patty.

While the flowers were nice, i could handle only one or 2 bites.  Way too much fried.  The fried zucchini was average, and the pancake was horrid.

My bf loved all of it.

For mains.   I ordered the filet  mignon  – came with a side of mash.

He ordered the pork medallions with sautéed spinach.

Filet was encrusted with blue cheese and sat on a plum sauce.  The potatoes had a heap of creamy cheesy spinach on top.

Again, could not eat it.   It was so rich and heavy.  Reminded me of the time I accidentally ate at a Cracker Barrel.

My bf thought it was lovely.

His pork dish was fabulous.  Not overwhelming.

For dessert, we had coffe ( excellent I might add) and we split the coffee cake.   Cake was served with a light chocolate sauce that we pour over the top.  It was amazing.

Can't say I'd go back as this is obviously not my kind of food.  Wasn't bad – just not for me.

  4. I received a gift certificate to eat at this restaurant and after eating here for my first time I must say.. I am sure glad I did because I probably would've never found this place.

Everything we ordered for dinner was excellent and worthy of the five-star review I will be leaving.  The food was absolutely delicious; I doubt you could find something on the menu that would not be awesome.  As mentioned in many of the other reviews the deviled eggs were actually very good.  What an interesting, typically 'un-loved' food item to become one of the restaurant's most mentioned!  Who would have known? BYOB Is the icing on the cake.

The venue itself was also great, dimly lit, intimate, and hip.  Delicious food, great service with a great atmosphere.  5/5

    Make sure to make reservations!

  5. I loved this restaurant – it was small and intimate, very cute, amazing food, they accomodated our large group, and its BYOB!  Nice!  Also, it was in a very cute part of town – the street it is on has all these cute little shops and they had Christmas lights hanging on the trees lining the street.  Very adorable.

To start we got some "bites" of the deviled eggs and a platter of pickled things.  There were 3 different types of eggs – Chipotle, Curry and Pesto flavored.  All were fantastic, but particularly the Curry, then Chipotle.  Honestly, I could have eaten nothing but those eggs and been satisfied.  They were absolutely delicious.  I think it was $4 for 3 eggs?  For the pickled things, I only tried the pickled apples, which were delicious and gave me an idea for something amazing I could make at home.

The fiance and I split a tomato soup to start.  It was creamy and piping hot.  Others at the table had a fondue dish which I was really tempted to get and apparently that was amazing too.  The menu was really small (one of my few criticisms of the place) but every single appetizer and several of the meals looked amazing and it was agonizing making a choice.

Frankly, I think I made the wrong choice for a meal.  I chose the pork osso bucco, which was risky for me because I didn't know what osso bucco was before ordering and there was a scallop dish on the menu.  I made an agreement with the fiance that if I could have some of his scallop dish, he could have some of my pork.  After tasting the scallops, which were INCREDIBLE, I kind of wished I had ordered those, though the osso bucco was also very good.  It is basically a big lump of pork and it came with some mushroomy sauce, yam puree and swiss chard.  Swiss chard was really hard to eat because its like this really tough lettuce that is hard to rip apart with your teeth.  The pork was softer and "fall off the bone-er" than I expected (I was thinking more pork chop) – very tasty, not bad at all, but I would have liked the scallops in the end.  The scallops came a bed of creamy amazing risotto, and its one of those things where you take a bite and have to make an audible since it is so amazing.  Other notable dishes were the ribs, duck and salmon which everyone said was amazing.

I am going on way too long, but I will conclude by saying GET THE DEVILED EGGS.  They are fantastic.  And get one of the seafood dishes, those were the best entrees.  Also, important to note it is BYOB so bring your own drinks.  I have no clue if they have a "corking fee" for wine, but for beer they just brought us out some glasses.  This place is expensive, so this is a special occasion place mostly, I would say.  Yum, yum!

  6. Food deserves 5 stars… Service 3.5 stars.

Dined here over the weekend and was very very happy with our meal. Our waiter was not friendly, and had somewhat of an overpowering tone when speaking to us. He wasn't rude, but he clearly was not the most pleasant person to be approached by. The other waiter, who was tasked as a server and cleaner was MUCH nicer.

I started off with the deviled eggs as my appetizer. I loved them! Not too filling and just enough to start off my dinner. My friends ordered the soup of the day, which was split pea with bacon. It's not saying much, but they said it's the best split pea they ever had. The only thing that took us back was our waiter approached us and asked us what did he tell us the soup of the day was. The soups came out two minutes later. We found it shocking that he did not know what the soup of the day was. Secondly, it's nice to know that the soup was most likely refrigerated since God knows when and microwaved/re-heater before being served.

For entrees, I ordered the salmon. It was good and cooked perfectly, although the sauce over the salmon didn't enhance any flavor or take away from it. Could have just served me the salmon itself and it would have tasted the same. My friends ordered the hen. I had a taste of the hen and I loved it. It was marinated really well. I might order this the next time I come here.

For dessert, they had an apple cobbler and French vanilla bread pudding. We ordered both of them to share and we fully enjoyed them.

The restaurant is on the small side, so definitely make reservations if you choose to dine here. It's BYOB. Expect to spend $50-$60 a person after tax/tip here with an app, entree, and dessert.

  7. I went to Grange last Sunday for dinner and really enjoyed myself. We made reservations, just in case, which was a good idea because this place is very small.

atmosphere: small, dim lighting, hip, a bit of a country feel because of all the wood. Also, a bit romantic yet still can be a fun atmosphere for a group

food: everything was really good. we had the deviled eggs (not a fan of regular deviled eggs but these were really good!), salmon and the soup of the day. For entrees, we had the salmon and the pork, which was a special. I was excited to have a perfectly cooked salmon (which it was) because I had a dry, disappointing salmon entree the weekend before. It came with asparagus and a Dijon sauce. It was soo good! I wish I could eat it again right now actually… anyway, the pork was also very tasty. For dessert, we had the coconut chocolate cake and they gave us a dessert on the house! A bowl of fruit with some home made cream mixture. The fruit was really good. I didn't try the choc cake because I am not a fan of coconut. I kind of regret not trying it now..

Overall, this is a small, trendy, intimate restaurant. I suggest making reservations, especially if it's a Saturday. Oh, and it's BYOB– always a plus.
