Maggie’s Place

“I was in charge of planning the event and I was SO happy that I chose Maggie's Place instead of Connolly's – both are on the same block as my office building.”

“It can get packed but will thin out a bit after the work crowd heads to Grand Central to catch their trains home.”

“Fun and Christmassy too, if a bit crowded with the after work happy hour scene.”

  1. Average Irish pub with average beer selection with a surprising amount of seating.  There were no happy hour deals, but hey, the place was an oasis from the crappy weather outside.  Recommend bypassing the front seating and marching all the way to the back for a delightfully quiet New York bar experience.  Will try their food menu on a repeat visit.

  2. Came here for a quick drink after work.  The bartenders were friendly and attentive.  I ordered beers the whole night, so I can't comment on the drink making skills. I sat at the bar and did notice their bartenders had to waste a lot of beer as it seemed like their pours always came out foam heavy.  Not sure if it's just bad lines or if the bartenders needed more training.

Wasn't too loud so it's a great place for you and a small group to get together and catch up.

Nothing stood out about the place but it's great for a smaller crowd as the bar is very long and not very wide.

  3. Maggie's Place is a nice spot to grab a beer.  If you were planning to meet your friends across the street at Connolly's, and you'd prefer to avoid the crowd and pick a place with a more quaint feel, definitely suggest Maggie's Place instead!

The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, they always managed to come by just as the glass was getting near the bottom, talk about good timing!

I haven't tried any food there yet, but I'll definitely be back again!

  4. I went to Margaret's Abode after work when I had an hour to kill before I had to be somewhere close by. at 5:20 I walked in the door and every bar seat was taken. No surprise there. What did surprise me (in a good way) was that every tall-top table minus one was available including some seating at a booth in the back. AWESOME. We were quickly attended to by a waitress and were served delicious Ginger Fixers (dark and stormies). It was not loud and we could easily carry on a conversation without screaming. It looks like there is an upstairs space, but we didn't stay long enough to find out. I think I will definitely bring my coworkers back.

  5. Myself and the Mister popped in here to warm up and rest the legs after a lot of walking around New York.
We initially only intended on getting some drinks but looked over the food menu and couldn't resist. Small, but very appealing. Fully stocked bar and lovely decor.
I had the medium wings and he had the nachos. Both of which were just enough food for us and filled the space made from the exploring. The service was casual and friendly and the ambience was nice too. Not too touristy and not too serious either. Reading about the history of the bar was great too.
In a city were I was overwhelmed with the number of Irish bars this was by far the nicest of them.
Would certainly recommend it as a place to hide away for an hour from the bustle of the streets, and to warm up with a nice whisky.

  6. This place has two redeeming qualities: friendly staff and they can accommodate large groups.  Both floors are packed at lunch serving mostly burgers and fries and the afterwork scene downstairs at the bar is quite busy on weeknights.  Drinks aren't unreasonable but I try my best to avoid eating here.

Maybe I expected too much from the $17 plate of fish & chips.  This was two large pieces of cod which were fried correctly but entirely devoid of flavor.  I never say this in restaurants, but the fries and fish were both lacking salt.  The frying oil was probably overdue for a change because my coworker and I both felt queasy after lunch.  Burgers were unremarkable though properly cooked to order and generous in size.  On a Thursday at 12:30pm the crowd noise was so loud we were struggling to hear each other across the table – this is not an ideal spot for a lunch conversation.

Grab a beer here after work if you must, but thankfully there are many alternatives nearby for better food.

  7. Went here for a lunch and they hit the spot! Their dishes are pricey for a typical lunch, about $17-25 a piece. I had the salmon which was a small healthy portion but it was delicious! It came with 3-4 ravioli pieces which were stuff with mushroom. The buttery cream sauce was my favorite as far as flavor goes in this dish. A lot their dishes are a pretty good portion for a hungry adult. Enjoy!

  8. I come by here quite a bit with my coworkers. I love it here–more so than the bar right across the street, ahem.

First, the service at Maggie's is definitely better. In addition, the ambience cozier. Servers also give pretty spot-on recommendations.

Second, food here is pretty good–either that or I am drunk when I eat there, so everything tasted great. Definitely try their burgers, spinach artichoke dip, and calamari.

Last, it is not crowded. There is a second floor seating area if you don't feel like standing around at the bar.
