The UWS can be a bit stuffy, and because of that there aren't many casual spots to grab some drinks and grub before a show at the Beacon.
Luckily the folks at Amsterdam Ale have a captive audience. Although the food is crappy, the portions are small and the prices are high this spot is always packed out before a show. Sucks that they are the only game in town, next time I'll have to look extra hard for anything else. I really don't want to come back here again if I can help it.
AAH's sole redeeming quality is their beer selection. No, there is no happy hour on show nights…le sigh…but for around 6-7 dollars they have a variety of craft draft and bottle selections. It is an ale house after all.
Where the night went terribly wrong was on the food. We decided to split a couple of apps. Mac and cheese bites, jalepeno poppers and chicken tenders. Seems fairly harmless, right? I know good chicken tenders. If you've ever met me before you know that I know good chicken tenders too. They aren't very hard to mess up, and I'm not even that picky. The order had four teeensy burnt fingers. Such a let down. The poppers were also really teeny and burnt to a crisp. Thankfully we added mac and cheese bites into the mix because they were actually pretty tasty. Although come to think of it, the bites were supposed to have smoked gouda but really just tasted like kraft. Whatevs yo, it was edible and I'll take it.
As long as I don't come here haaangry all should be well and good, cause the food here was gnarly and I don't want any part of it.
Great food, great drink selection and excellent service. What more can I ask for? Had a great time eating outside on a warm summer day. I had the chicken pesto sandwich and my boyfriend had the Angus burger. Shoutout to our server Valerie who was attentive and great!
Solid 3.5
Every time I went to the Upper West Side Soul Cycle location, I'd pass the Amsterdam Ale House and admire its charming pub atmosphere with locals chowing down on burgers and cold beers. Realizing that I would soon change neighborhoods and no longer be near the Upper West Side, I set a date for the BF & I to have a pub-style dinner on a Wednesday night.
This restaurant/bar is constantly packed! We had drinks at the bar as we waited for a table for two inside. Once seated, we reviewed the menu and craved all of the naughty fried bar food (jalapeno poppers anyone!?). I ordered the Bison Burger (first time having Bison) with cheddar, grilled onions, and sweet potato fries + Bleu cheese dressing on the side. Even though I liked that it was served on a grilled English muffin, the bread on the second half of my burger was too soggy to eat.
Overall, I was pleased with my meal and wouldn't mind coming back for those naughty appetizers!
Great place to grab a beer, watch the game and enjoy a fantastic pretzel! Place was packed but the service was on point! The bartender was really pleasant and very knowledgeable.
This is a pretty cool joint in the middle of the happening strip on the UWS. There's plenty of indoor as well as sidewalk seating. It happened to be a beautiful summer/fall evening so it was very comfortable. Perfect place to grab drinks, relax, and catch a few football games on the flat screens through the open indoor-outdoor folding doors.
The beers are pretty cheap at $7 per large glass. Service was good and fast. The nachos…they looked better than they tasted, honestly, but I guess most people don't come here for the nachos.
The night I went was weird though because someone threw bottles from some apartment window and smashed the windshield of a car pretty close to us. But anyways, don't expect that much excitement when you're here.
Oh boy. Went here for my first and last time on Saturday night. Fiancé and I were starving after the trip into the city and needed to get out of sub zero temps so we figured how bad could the food be at your run of the mill bar. Answer: bad. Our grilled chicken sandwich tasted like it was fresh out of the freezer. The sweet potato fries were equally as unfortunate. We should have known better after having seen how the menu was all over the place.
The only redeeming quality of this place as mentioned in other reviews is the decent tap list. Also worth mentioning was the service. She was attentive and friendly. Unfortunately with so many other food/drink options available, good service alone isn't enough to get be back. Will not return.
This is a great neighborhood spot. They have a lot of beers on tap that they change. The employees are friendly and work efficiently. The chicken kabobs and nachos are good. Also they have outdoor seating.
Came here for football Sunday. They have many tvs all over the walls perfect for any seat you get. There is a brunch menu until 4 that, although extensive, you're not allowed to order from the regular menu until after 4; they made an "exception" for my veggie wrap that I requested. The wrap was good- squash, peppers, mushrooms, and goat cheese. The sweet potato fries are very good but I wish they'd served them with some type of sauce or cinnamon/sugar on top or something. The wine selection is small…but this is an ale house. Overall the food is decent/good for being a sports bar.
