“Drink booze while watching sports and eating a ramen burger (man I wish they flavored the ramen "patties").”

“As of today, the vendors are Mighty Quinn's BBQ, El Meat Hook, Semesa and Lumpia Shack.”

“After a while, though, I was tempted into getting Asia Dog's panko-crusted corndog with a katsu mayo.”

  1. I'm surprised it has three stars! The venue is spacious and clean. It has multiple food options, as well as a bunch of drinks.

Mighty Quinn's here is just mighty quinn's. No big difference from the food from the actual locations in terms of food.

The Philipino poutine from Lumpia Shack ($10) though, is a MUST! I had poutine multiple times in Montreal but i think the Poutine here topped it. The fries were so crispy, toppings so savory. We guzzled this down so fast..

  2. Whats with the 3 star rating? This spot is awesome! Cool food vendors, huge bar menu, a cafe/dessert section, free wi-fi, and ample seating!

    Food!

    -Mighty Quinn's
    1/2 lbs Brisket ($12)

I work at Brookfield Place Hudson Eats so I don't go out of my way to order Mighty Quinn's.  But I figured I haven't had it in a while and it smelled great by their stand.  Brisket was juicy and tender, but I'll probably get it in a sandwich next time.

    -El Meat Hook
    Nachos ($7) + Chorizo ($2)
    Sweet Corn Bread ($2)

This was surprisingly yummy!  Chips were super crunchy and held together well even with all that queso sauce and beans.  Chorizo was a very nice touch, I'm really glad I didn't pass on these.  I also like that their were nice big chunks of avocado in there.  Oh, and I've never seen the pickled veggies on nachos before, but I dig it!

The Sweet Corn Bread was pretty much just corn bread.  It was good, but I could do without it.

    -Lumpia Shack!
    Filipino Poutine ($10.50)
    Pork Adobo Ramen Burger ($12.50)

There might be a little bias being that I'm Filipino… but this has to be the best vendor there, hands down.  The Filipino Poutine was a steal for $10! It was a great side dish for all 6 of us to share.  Only thing is, it could've used a little freshness and color.  The pork hash, fries, egg-yolk, gravy and cheese curds were all great, but so dang heavy! Chopped scallions maybe?

The Pork Adobo Ramen Burger was definitely a great way for me to try the ramen burger.  I've always neglected to get it at Smorgasburg!  The "ramen bun" was nice and crispy on the outside and al dente on the inside; not my ideal bun but it was good!  But the kicker was the beautifully braised pork belly in between the buns! YUM!

This is such an awesome "Chill" spot.  I'm considering bringing my friends over for some food, drinks, and playoff games!  Did I mention the big screen in the front of the venue?

  3. One of my favorite places to hang out in the neighborhood!

The space at Berg'n is awesome – it has kind of an industrial/warehouse type vibe, and the building is very spacious. There are long cafeteria style/communal tables as well as smaller tables along the side. During the earlier part of the day it's not uncommon for you to see people chilling, reading, or working while enjoying a cup of coffee (free wifi here too, which is a plus). As the day progresses into the early afternoon and evening, it becomes more of a beer hall, where they have a pretty respectable tap selection. Rotational food stalls are there in case you have the munchies – most recently I've seen Mighty Quinn's BBQ and Lumpia Shack. FYI, Ramen Burger is no longer there if that's what you're looking for.

Such a versatile space: coffee shop by day and beer hall by night with excellent food options. The place is perfect to come chill at alone or with big groups. Definitely a great neighborhood spot!

  4. I'm not sure why this place only has 3.5 stars – maybe people are grumpy or looking something to  complain about?

    First, the basics –
This place is set up like a beer hall, a couple tables on the side, bar seating and long communal tables. As of today, the vendors are Mighty Quinn's BBQ, El Meat Hook, Semesa and Lumpia Shack. There's also coffee/pastries and Good Batch ice cream sandwiches on the side. Though most of the vendors are bigger on food, there is a bar and free water is available. It's clean, bright (from all the windows) and they have a large projector for sports things. It's good for groups to just hangout.

We may have gone a little overboard with our orders:

    MIGHTY QUINN
I'm pretty familiar with this vendor from their location at Brookfield Place, so I knew the brisket ($12) was going to be great. Their style of food is slow smoked barbecue, but they do have other options if you aren't craving something so meaty.

    EL MEAT HOOK
Definitely a solid vendor! They do fries, burgers, nachos, burritos, aka perfect bar food. Their fries are seasoned, the burgers have good quality meat and are filling. The nachos ($7) also have a pretty large serving, especially if you add on chorizo (+$2). The chips stayed crispy all the way to the end and I like the added radishes for freshness. We also tried their sweet corn bread ($2) which was alright, but nothing had you can't live without.

    LUMPIA SHACK
Probably my favorite vendor! I am Filipino, so I was pretty excited about the unique things that they're doing with Filipino food – modern twists on lumpia, Sisig bowls, build your own BBQ bowls, Filipino poutine and the pork adobo ramen burger.  I still prefer their traditional lumpia to the duck/truffle lumpia, but props for trying. Their pork ramen burger ($13) was pretty good! A little difficult to eat, but I'm glad I tried it. I actually enjoyed the texture of the ramen buns – a little crisp on the outside, but the noodles weren't too densely packed into the bun and we're still definitely noodles. As for the Filipino poutine ($10), it was heavy and a large serving. But of course it was, fries topped with cheese, gravy and meat.

As for the little cafe on the side –
They do pour over coffee, as well as lattes, cappuccinos, etc. and pasties. They also sell Dough donuts (though they sell out quickly) and Good Batch ice cream sandwiches. This is also where you'll find the wifi password!

  5. Very cool spot to hang out. Great for groups and they have smaller tables for parties of 2-4 too.

The food options are great. We had Lumpia Shack when we were there. The bowls ($13) are super filling. The pork lumpia ($7.50) was nice and crisp. The adobo ramen burger ($12) was good but I prefer the regular beef ramen burger.

There's staff you can order drinks from or you can go to the bar. There are huge screens too which is a big plus for watching games.

  6. Cafeteria style, Berg'n is a great place for groups or for casual fun. With a full bar in the back, several food options available, and a dessert area (although that closes early), Berg'n pretty much has it all and will satisfy the needs of any group.

They have service at the bar and waiter service at the main tables. Every time I've been I've had friendly waiters and waitresses who are willing to split all bills. The food is paid for at their individual stands.

The atmosphere is relaxing and pretty quiet on a given afternoon. It can get a little loud on a Friday or Saturday night but that's mostly due to the number of people laughing and having a nice time.

It's not particularly cheap–actually it's on the more expensive side–but it can be a good place to hang without feeling pressure to buy more and certainly a good place to visit and see friends.

  7. People – the Sissia Vegan/Vegetarian (you can get it with or without an egg) Rice Bowl from Lumpia Shack is hands down the best veg bowl I have had in NYC. Hands down – much much better than comparable dishes from Cinnamon Snail.

    1) They asked if I wanted mild, medium or hot. Obviously I ordered hot (and put an emphasis on the word) and it was perfectly spicy.
    2) The dressing on the salad was a little spicy and citrusy – a lovely surprise.
    3) They use Monk's Meat seitan – and it was so well spiced and a little charred. I knew that I loved this brand of seitan, but I had never had it cooked to perfection before.
    4) The accompaniments – picked ginger, brown rice, spicy sauce, etc… Provided great nuance and flavor in each bite.

Try it. Especially if you eat vegetarian food.

Ironically, a Filipino friend of mine recently gave me recs for great Filipino spots in the city (his top spots are in Queens). I haven't visited the spots since there is often a lot of pork.  Lumpia Shack gave me a peak, albeit it's Filipino street food. I eat a lot of Malaysian food – not Filipino – I think this will change.

  8. A review of Ed and Bev's, which is inside Berg'n.

I needed something to eat in between a couple of beers at an afternoon hang at Berg'n. I went with a hot dog and some fries. It's a perfectly serviceable dog, which doesn't seem to measure up to some of the best I've had down on Coney Island or out in the great hot dog states of the northeast and midwest.

I still say that the best default place in Berg'n is Lumpia Shack, especially now that Bklyn Burro  has moved out to its own space. The beer here is better than the food.
