Great place for locals!
The gf and I stopped by try a local sushi place that was well recommended to us. Unfortunately, it was closed. Not sure if that's because it's Sunday or because they open a little later, but it was closed. We passed THE OTHER PLACE and decide to stop in. I wasn't crazy about the idea cause it seemed like a bar with bar food and I wanted something a bit better than burgers and fries, but I'm glad we did stop in.
THE OTHER PLACE has a terrible name. It's one of those names that's suppose to be funny (or not) but isn't. 'Where are you going?' you might ask a friend. They respond, 'THE OTHER PLACE.' *Insert giggles here.* Meh, I don't really care about the name that much, but the hacky name is worth noting.
Inside THE OTHER PLACE has an unusual decor. It's a much bigger place than you'd expect. Enough space to have a ping-pong table in the back as well as a pool table in the corner. Also in the corner–a large chalk board wall. Fun times. The ceiling could make you feel you're at an old-time theater, but you're not. It's reasonably dark, even during the day, but there is def plenty of space. They hold open mike nights and have other events (including live music) frequently.
So that's the layout of the place. We go in and they've got Sunday brunch. Mon-Sat they have a lunch prefix, but Sunday's is all about brunch. How much is this brunch? $18.99. Goddamn! I'm not crazy about paying $14 for eggs during brunch but this is taking it to a new level. that's $20 for eggs! You know what though? I honestly didn't mind paying for it. THE OTHER PLACE has more brunch options than other folks and they offer english muffins. I LOVE english muffins. I had the classic omelette, which came with home/french fries and an english muffin. The gf had a grilled chicken sandwich. Both were great. The french fries we got were the delicious thin fries; not the abortion that is steak fries. Brunch comes with two drinks, which somewhat justifies the price. They've got some delicious beers available as well as your brunch go-to bloody mary. I had two beers. Really hit the spot after a morning out in the sun.
The servers were fantastic, personable, friendly, and accommodating. No crabby folks allowed.
I would def come back here again and plan to. The service is great, the food is great, the space is great–perfect for small or large groups–and it's just a nice place to chill and have a drink and enjoy some food. Don't expect anything crazy. At the end of the day, this is still a bar with food that's better than usual, but expectations should be tempered.
Try it and let me know what you think. I'll def be back for some good beer and food.
I'm bumping The Other Place up to 4 stars because we've eaten here since my previous review and the food is on par with what I expected from the people who run Dirty Pierre's.
I highly recommend the fried chicken – three large juicy pieces, perfectly battered and crispy but not soggy, with a sriracha/maple dipping sauce on the side. awesome mashed potatoes too – definitely not the boxed Ore-Ida junk.
service is very friendly and usually reliable with regards to speed. last time we came on a Sunday for lunch and it was packed with a lot of large groups (several kids' sports teams + their parents, and another big party as well), so the limited waitstaff seemed stretched thin; however, when we did get our food it was fresh and hot. our waitress pointed out that this was a fluke and it's usually not that hectic for lunch.
glad to see they are hosting plenty of events here. lots of live music – rock, motown, jazz, country, and more on the calendar. even have some local breweries doing "tap takeover" weeks. I apparently just missed Finback's "tap takeover" week by two days, which means I'll have to keep a closer eye on the events calendar.
while I do like the Austin Street bars, The Other Place is a reminder that I need to go drinking on Metropolitan more often.
I really enjoyed coming here on a Saturday night. I typically dread going to bars on the weekends because of the crowds, and bartenders are too busy.
The bartender was very hospitable, eager to let us know what's on draft, and give us the drink menu. They have a wide selection of beers to choose from. Of course, I was in a Bloody Mary mood – and did not order the delicious apricot beer that I was leaning towards. Bloody Mary presentation was beautiful, drink delicious!! They got me at 5 olives.
Chicken Quesadilla hit the spot. You could tell the tortilla was nicely fried. Often, when you order a quesadilla at a bar, might not be the best. I felt like I was ordering from an authentic Mexican restaurant. Probably better than any quesadilla I have had at an actual Mexican restaurant! Guacamole was perfect.
Great music. Not too loud so you are able to talk to your friends.
I most certainly will be back to check out the rest of the food on the menu, and ask about the different events they have coming up. Psychic night???? What?? Sounds pretty cool, and different.
Oh yeah, bathrooms are INCREDIBLY CLEAN. ++++
I was excited to stop over at The Other Place a few times since its creation and I found it a relaxing environment to enjoy lunch with a friend, with a client, a neighbor. A good meal, filling enough for any appetite at a fair price in a trendy portion of Metropolitan Ave is a reason is why I frequented The Other Place
Like I said in the last review for this place, they got desserts now and more specials and so on. This place is coming together rather nicely like I knew it would!
3 and 1/2 stars but stiil not Dirty Pierre's.
Todd Wolfe band last night was great! Service is terrific. Drinks were good and strong and they are very accommodating.
Food has improved some but they don't have specials like clams and chorizo that Dirty Pierre's offers.
The hot honey wings were devoured, fish tacos were good. Butternut squash soup was yummy and sweet if a bit too thick. Chicken remoulade was very good as were the mashed potatoes, fried chicken and grilled chicken sandwich ( which is larger at Dirty Pierre's).
It is a nice, friendly local spot and we will keep returning.
On Thursdays you can get 25 cent wings. The wings are crispy to perfection and are just the right amount of hot (spice). The Thai wings are soo good (ask if you can get them well done). And be sure to try the fish tacos.
