Crif Dogs

“Also, where else can you go at 3 in the morning and get a hot dog, a milkshake, tater tots, and play Ms. Pac-Man or a game of Connect Four?”

“My usual meal is 1 Spicy Redneck (Bacon Wrapped, Chili, Cole Slaw, Jalapenos), and 1 BLT Dog with Cheese with a birch beer.”

“The place itself is pretty cool but what really grabbed my attention was the speak easy hidden behind the phone booth in the corner.”

  1. Let me start by saying I don't even like hotdogs. Crif dogs are the only hotdogs in the land that I eat and actually CRAVE.

This place is famous for a reason, an absolute MUST try when in the village. After trying just about all the items on the menu the John-John wrapped in bacon with hot sauce is my absolute favorite. If you like everything bagels and bacon, this ones for you. Skip the fries and double up on another hotdog instead. Oh yea, and PDT is an awesome bar next door that you can enter (if you're lucky) through the phone booth. They have a few different hot dogs you can't order at Crif, I highly suggest you try the kimchi dog while you're there if you want something spicy.

They're also open late which is perfect after a night of drinking! True gem!

  2. The BF LOVES his hot dogs.  He's constantly stopping at one of the typical NY hot dog joints (e.g. Papaya Dog) for an aperitif (aka a hot dog loaded with sauerkraut and mustard).  Even though my mouth salivates every time I watch him eat one, the typical NY hot dog joint tends to gross me out (I've had bad experiences).

Crif Dogs is certainly the exception – it's a no-bullshit authentic spot located on St. Marks (also where PDT is secretly hidden).  The dogs are GOOD – so good that I've been thinking about them since last night's pre-dinner experience.  I had the  Chihuahua – a bacon wrapped dog with avocado and sour cream – it was delicious and I could have eaten two more.

Crif Dogs may be the answer to my BF's prayers (getting me to settle for hot dogs at any time).  I look forward to coming back and trying all the different dawgs + delicious looking sides (waffle fries, HELLO!)

  3. Coming to this spot, you really just have to come with the expectation of satisfying that hankering for some late night eats. And that alone. And what better way than to get a hot dog with an array of fixin's based on what you're craving.

Came here literally around 2:30am and it was pretty crowded. The person taking orders had to slow the pace down, so things could catch up and she took care of us, which helped with the crowd control. I appreciated that.

My cousin and I split a "Good morning" and it was delicious! Bacon wrap hot dog with a fried egg…melted cheese…Drizzle a little ketchup…you basically have a nice breakfast in a bun! Of course my cousin and I devoured it in seconds. I'll be sure to come back and get my own next time and try something different.

  4. I don't know – maybe I got the wrong thing here, but the hot dog wasn't good. Nothing about the Chihuahua tasted all that great. The meat was disappointing as well as the toppings. I was expecting something better for all I heard about it being a creative hot dog place.

I would go back to try something else, but honestly, my first experience was poor, and there are so many other better options around the East Village. I would say skip crif dogs if you're looking for dinner – maaaybe try it for a quick snack, but there are better hot dogs out in the world.

  5. Came here due to Anthony Bourdain's Layover and it wasn't all that.

Tried the jon-jon deragon and Chihuahua hot dog. The deragon hot dog is reminiscent of a everything bagel with cream cheese. Chihuahua hot dog is good if you add the salsa. I wish they used better beef hot dogs. The tater tots on the other hand are good though.

  6. I'm a fan of Criff Dogs! It's a place I always have to stop by when I'm in NYC. It's my favorite hot dog restaurant in NYC!

They know how to spice up and making hot dog eating! If you love the classic New York hot dog, you can snag that! If you are a meat lover they have several types of meats you can choose from! The first time I was there I had a veggie dog, which is for all the vegetarians out there! It's so awesome because now everyone can indulge in eating hot dogs! I'm not a big fan of their friends or tater tots. They just aren't that appetizing. They do give an abundant amount and are not stingy about it! They place isn't that big but it is open very late so you can definitely grab a late night bite! The restaurant has cool vibes! There is a little British phone booth which actually leads to a bar next door but you need to have the password in order to enter.  Which is so cool!

If your in the NYC are definitely check it out!

  7. The first time I came here, I was patiently waiting for my order and noticed people kept disappearing through the telephone booth. It took us two seconds to learn about PDT and made mental notes to return for some not-so-secret cocktails.

Ok, I like this place. I just plain like processed meats wrapped in tube-shaped casing. I like 'em even better with fatty toppings. I'm the weirdo that puts fries in my burgers, or two hot dogs in one bun.
Crif's has an extensive list of signature dogs to choose from. Of course you can choose to build your own and add toppings. You can also get a veggie dog, which I can't help but think that defeats the purpose of a hot dog.

Chihuahua – bacon-wrapped dog with avocado & sour cream:
Very creamy and the sour cream was a little overkill.

Good Morning – bacon-wrapped dog with melted cheese & a fried egg:
Very reminiscent of many lazy breakfasts that I have concocted

Spicy Red neck – bacon-wrapped dog with chili, cole slaw & jalapenos:
I don't usually like like cole slaw, but even this hefty dog tasted a little refreshing after the other two heavier ones.

Everything was simple and tasty, but the combinations are easy to replicate in your own kitchen.  Also, bacon-wrapped things aren't the easiest things to eat. You kind of have to rip through the bacon with each bite.
Even though I appreciate that their beef & pork dogs are handmade, I can't tell the difference between their dogs and store-bought, pre-packaged dogs.

Prices are as heart-stopping as the ingredients. The signature dogs are about $5-$6. A classic new yorker is only $3.50. Toppings are about $1-$2, so that can easily add up. Actually, the signature dogs aren't priced too bad, if you compare it to theme park pricing.
    Overall, I give it a 7/10.

If hot dogs aren't your jam, they also serve burgers, fried potato products, and shakes, the all-encompassing American menu. If you're looking for relatively inexpensive, fast food that is open late, then Crif's is great for that. The sarcastic humor on the walls is just an added bonus. Plus, there's a condom machine = protect yourself. I support that message.

  8. I was a little bit disappointed by this place. I expected a little bit more.

First, there was no air inside in the business and it was very hot inside.

Then, the service was correct but they seemed like they did not care about their clients: service of a fast food.

And finally the prices : 6$ for a simple hot dog bought in a fast food. Isn't it a bit too much?
