it's ok
Now that I've been living on the East Coast for awhile, things are starting to come full circle. I think back on the times I used to go shopping with my mother. We'd run errands for the apartment and pick up things at Woolworth's. A trip to Woolworth's always included sitting on the bar stool at the counter while we waited for lunch. I was too young to realize we didn't live in NJ and that we were only there because it was our Summer home away from home. For me, this was just our usual routine. This is what the locals did.
My friend raves about Mango's and their pandebono. We stopped in before our afternoon shopping, got one of each, sweet and savory, and halved them so we could both try the difference. Instead of taking them to go, we sat at the counter. Mango's is not a fancy place. The décor is in its original form, old and outdated. We sat and ate our pandebono properly with coffee. I actually had mine with hot chocolate but it is with the same sentiment. The pandebono here is definitely better than the ones at La Abundancia. They are less greasy, softer, less sweet and more cheesy. We chatted about our plans and caught up on some chismis. We lingered and made ourselves at home. This new routine makes me feel like a local. I am one. I just never acted like one.
Mango's does have a sit down restaurant portion and the front is a bakery. The bakery is full of cakes and bread. There is a calm stream of people and it is obvious they are all people from the neighborhood and regulars. I spied this Colombian bread pudding (pudin de pan) that I have recently become fixated with. It looks like a brick, rich and sweet. One day I will try it. It sits next to the flan, which also looks like a brick, rich and sweet. I smile. Mango's seems promising and is an all together welcoming spot in the neighborhood.
