Weird that I have not reviewed this place as it is our FAVORITE Italian restaurant. When I met my now husband in 2008, he lived around the corner from Portobello. We discovered it then and have been dining here ever since. We now make a special trip from Morristown, NJ to eat here.
Meals are phenomenal. We have always loved everything we have eaten. Typially, we start with the calamari sampler. Every time we try to figure out which of the three sauces we like best. It always ends in a tie with all three. Moreover, there aren't a lot of tentacles which is a plus for me!!!!
For the entree, I always order the stuffed chicken as I can't get it anywhere else. It is just perfect, stuffed with cheese and sausage over risotto. My husband gets a variety of dishes, so I always get a bite of the other menu items. Everything is delicious.
I recently threw a party for my husbands birthday. They were very accommodating and EVERYONE at the table loved their meals. And….Many of the guests are some of the pickiest eaters I know!!!
On Hylan Blvd in Staten Island not too far from the Outer Bridge Crossing this cute Italian bistro sits with a 5 stool bar and soft music in the back ground. Comforting warm wood accents with mustard yellow walls scream Old Italy.
The menu offers some wonderful traditional Italian dishes and when I see scungilli I can't resist gravitating in that direction so I had to go with the scungilli/ sea food lunch special over linguini. For starters I had to explore the escargot and oh my goodness in a heavy buttery garlic sauce that was so wonderfully absolutely amazing traveling from the tip of the tongue to the throat bouncing down the stomach with joy. The Fra Diavolo sauce was absolutely on fire unbelievably perfect, just right amount of tomato perfect amount of heat just right portion of seafood was placed in with several clams, calamari and mussels. Quite satisfying and the linguini was cooked well albeit a little over cooked. The portion was quite substantial for a lunch special. The house red a cab was good but at $9 over priced. Salad had too much dressing but fresh.
Halfway thru my meal a chinese delivery boy handed a dish to the bartender where she proceeded to eat it in front of me at the bar??? On more than one occasion I noticed a waitress ask the guests if they wanted they're change? I felt it was highly unprofessional and the manager should straighten them out. In fact there were a few other mess ups during my meal and I was a little shocked that the manager didn't go out of her way to at the least comp one of the two glasses of wine that I had. So I complained and received gift cert.
The portions are huge even for lunch and the smell of cooking marinara lightly filled the air. Aside from the sub par service the food is truly good and I will go back but will keep my current rating at a strong 3.5.
Great Italian food – comfort food style. Huge portions. Service is always good – very nice, usually young guys. Penne vodka is my favorite and it's delicious. The calamari is great too – nice flavor and not too breaded or greasy. All the entrees i've tried have been great, and the price is very reasonable.
If I do somehow still have room for dessert, I go to ralph's ices across the street for amazing creamy ices.
